A clip from the Jimi Hendrix biopic All Is By My Side, starring Outkast's Andre Benjamin (aka Andre 3000), has surfaced online ahead of the film's SXSW screening.

The film was written and directed by 12 Years a Slave screenwriter John Ridley and premiered at the Toronto Film Festival.

It doesn't yet have a U.S. release date, but Open Road is distributing the film.

I'm sure Mr. Ridley and production studios will take full advantage of his recent Oscar win when they begin promoting this.

Andre's work in Revolver was HORRIBLE. Worse than Prince's acting in PR. Hopefully he's gotten better.

Holy shit, his voice is exact Jimi. Andre may win Oscar gold.

I think he's going to be getting AWARDS for this, like, real awards, oscars and shit

I don't think he looks THAT MUCH like Jimi but who does? but anyway, his voice is a killer and if you close your eyes you'd think its Jimmy himself speaking!

Looks interesting. Wasn't there another biopic made about Jimi with Wood Harris in the starring role (if I'm remembering correctly)? Perhaps it was a made-for-tv film or something.

Yeah I was exaggerating, but it just didn't look good compared to the rest of that cast. From the looks of this he probably has had a lot of acting coaching because I notice a considerable improvement.

The movie looks interesting.It's just such a shame that the Hendrix estate wouldn't allow any of Jimi's music to be used What is their problem?! Why are they so against Jimi's story being told in a movie? A successful Jimi Hendrix biopic would only spark more interest in him and his music/legacy,resulting in more money for the estate! Smh

I don't think they need any help with that. Hendrix is like John Lennon, Bob Marley, Louis Armstrong, & Elvis Presley in that he has lots of marketing with books, T-shirts, etc. and they're always putting out new albums of previously unreleased material and Jimi is mentioned a lot in guitar magazines. Most of the people who would go see a biopic or documentary are already interested in the subject anyway. Maybe OutKast fans would see it as well. This seems to be an indie film, so it's probably not going to be shown in a lot of places, maybe theaters that show "art films".

According to a few articles I've read, Hendrix estate believes the film is portraying him in a negative way. So they nixed the music rights being used. Really sux too. Like Andre's acting from these clips but being a huge fan of Jimi's work, seeing this is no longer a priority without the music.

They feel like he's being portrayed in a negative way? Yes the man is legendary but we all know that he was no angel. How realistic do they think the movie would had been if all it portrayed was his good side?

If it's about the early stages of his career then using compositions by others is not such a big problem as Jimi was still playing covers regularly then. Maybe there's some Hendrix style blues stuff and feedback hell included, so that could make up for the lack of original Hendrix compositions somewhat.

The voice is, eh, close, but you're bound to be pay attention to those moments when it's clearly "off". I was surprised when I saw the first pics that Andre didn't look that much like Jimi after all, because I had thought he would look perfect for the role.

Same here. Hendrix IS his music. I don't think a biopic around him would be complete without it.

You wouldn't tell from my posts, but my mom pretty much raised me on Hendrix when I was growing up.

I didn't know that. That's a shame, as it looks like it might be a pretty good movie. On the other hand, if it turns out that it's forced them to be creative and focus on his 'sound' in a more general way, using his take on blues material to show how he developed his style or something, the effect might not be too much of a disaster. That could still work with covers or more generic jams in his style, provided that they've got in musicians with a good feel for his music to do the soundtrack. (That might all be a bit optimistic, I know!)

Tbh, sometimes, it can be kinda corny in a music biopic, the way some well-known hit is shown to have come directly from events in the artist's life (e.g. Jimi's thinking about a girl called Mary as he walks home on a windy night....and suddenly he has an idea for a song! ).
