Did Kate Bush lose it after Sensual World? Let's discuss Kate's late period

I don't wanna be the only one who doesn't create a Kate Bush's thread, so here's mine.

---

I love Red Shoes and Aerial, the first one because it has some excellent songwriting, the second because it has the ambition of Hounds Of Love, with equally great results. As for 50 Words, I like it a lot, though not as much as the other two. I appreciate that it's a piano album, after all Kate is a pianist. And some of the songs, especially "Snowflake", are outstanding.

Kate has lost nothing to my ears. Quite the opposite really. I love how she continues to push her art into new and unexpected places.

I actually consider Aerial and 50 Words For Snow to be two of her greatest achievements.

They're up there with The Dreaming and Hounds Of Love for me.

Okay, they may not be very immediate in a "pop" sense, but they're both ridiculously beautiful.

Aerial is fantastic. 50 words didn't do much for me.

50 Words had some great moments. Wild Man was a fantastic single, almost as good as King Of The Mountain!! I also liked the title track with Stephen Fry and the duet with Elton. The opening track with Bertie was very haunting and emotional and Lake Tahoe was very poignant lyrically. I could never get into Among Angels and that jazzy one (title escapes me).

Aerial was all about the second half for me... songs like Sunset and Nocturne are amongst her best work. Even some of the more subtle moments are stunningly beautiful (am particularly fond of Prologue).

I felt that Directors Cut was interesting. Some things worked better than others... for example the newer versions of Deeper Understanding and Lily were improvements on the originals IMO, but I don't care for her newer rendition of This Womans Work (the original was perfect as it was).

The Red Shoes gets a bad wrap. I think most of the albums problems stem from its dated production (I think it sounded dated even back in 1993). Some great songs on that album though, particulary Top Of The World, Lily, And So Is Love, Moments of Pleasure and the title track. Even the Prince collaboration Why Should I Love You had a lot of potential, but is ultimately spoilt by those corny barbershop quartet backing vocals from Lenny Henry. Infact that song would've been a perfect choice for Directors Cut, especially over some of the tracks which barely sounded changed from the originals.

I've just realised that this thread overlaps with the one SuperSoul has created about Director's Cut. Sorry about it, SuperSoul. What we can do is discuss the post-1990 albums of new material here and talk about the reworkings of Director's Cut on the other thread. biggrin

No worries, just kidding around anyway. I don't have 50 Words, but Aerial is OK with me. It's the kind of record you need to hear a few times before it sinks in. Trust Kate to make songs about a washing machine the number pi (as Mojo mag said: she probably COULD sing the phone book)or a book on how to be invisible. Wish I had one of those! The second CD is a beautiful trip the kind of album you need to hear all in one go.

'Pi' is something special. The Aeriel album did have some other good moments.

.

'Constellation of The Heart'...was a strange attempt at some kind of soul / RnB rendition...don't believe me? Take another listen...and so The Red Shoes album was a...mish-mash.

.

Trying to identify what is special about 'King Of The Mountain, that MattyJam likes so much..and I've listened hard, but it's all subjective isn't it?

.

'The Director's Cut'...others can talk about that....

.

'50 Words for Snow'...as said elsewhere, is sombre, sober, beautiful...and forgettable...

Didn't she have Bertie after The Red Shoes and that was the reason she took her hiatus from music, right?

I don't think she lost it as others have said Aerial is an amazing double album.

While 50 had some moments I was jus tired of another sprawling everything but the kitchen sink continuing. As I stated back when it was released it would be nice for Kate to release a proper 4 minute good old classic single.

Pretty much the same for me, too...thought Aerial was great, 50 words...I realize it was something different, but I'm hoping for another 'proper" studio album (whatever that means , LOL....)

Aerial is probably the Kate Bush album I listen to the most. 50 Words I found took a long time to sink in, more than likely due to my decision never to listen to it unless it's winter. lol

The singles i heard from Aerial are fantastic. Haven't heard the full album yet... but, it seems she made good work. Throughout her entire career. No bad albums from what i have heard.

Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

'lose' not 'loose'. That always fucking pisses me off.

Indeed, no bad album in her entire career, that's my take. She has managed to follow her path apart from the pop treadmill and continues releasing really special, painstaking and beautiful music.

Corrected for you. Beg you pardon for making a slight mistake in a language that's not mine. Should you wish to continue in other language, I'd gladly do it in quite a few. biggrin

YES!!! I concur! "Aerial" is especially gorgeous to me! It's an autumn masterpiece! It dropped 11/05/05 in the U.S. and I couldn't get down to the local music store fast enough b4 work that day to scoop one up! smile

As for "Director's Cut," wasn't feelin' it. For ME, it was a waste of a recording and why on Earth would u change the title of a song that was a hit to another title??? ("The Sensual World" to "Flower Of The Mountain?") WHACK! :-O

Kate wanted to use James Joyce's Flower of the Mountain, but was denied permission by the writer's heirs. So she wrote her own lyrics and called it The Sensual World. Next time around, she did get permission to use Joyce's words, so that's why Flower of the Mountain was finally released. As she had intended all along.

I agree. While Aeriel had good moments I felt 50 Words was consistent straight through. It's become one of my favorites of her catalogue. Whenever I need something slighly depressing and moody I put it on. I listen to both of those albums more than Directors Cut. Aeriel though has one of my favorite Bush songs on any album "Somewhere in Between".
