Video was a new thing, sure there were laughable ones, bad fashion, concepts, dancing etc...BUT it was rare that there were themes being done over and over, I mean when 90% of rap videos by artists on labels and ONES NOT SIGNED area all about slapping a bill on a chicks ass, or a gun or a card game, or someone in "wannabe" scarface mode. To be honest for a generation that HAS IT ALL at your hands, technology and creativity advancements, U DO NOTHING with it.

rolleyes bored2

I just listed dozens of bands you can go check out. That has some incrediblew music videos produced. I know your busy praising Katy Perry and her voice in other threads lol but, if you actually educated yourself on other modern artists. You would know many artists do ineed use much of this tecnhology in new and refreshign ways. Until youe ducate yourself on the hundreds of artists that DO indeed do that. Your blowing some out your ass and sounding like an old man.

Some great ''modern'' music videos of the past few years. With fancy tech, big ideas, great use of camera and visual as well.

So quit yappin and post 'em smartass... Better not be like that wack SB commercial you posted last year either, nana

I'm a seventies kid but lemme try to 'splain anyhow.....

It's a dreamscape. Kinda like when you go to sleep with something weighing heavy on your mind, (having your heart broken for example). I have gone to sleep like that and have had all manner of bizarre imagery show up in my dreams.

Not really that hard to figure out but I suspect you just wanted to use it as an excuse to take a swipe at the oldsters....carry on. lol

Still one of my favorite songs from the eighties,

I posted this in another thread. But here's a start

It's honestly your fault for not seeking out good music. You like good music? find it! i can some great artists that none of you haven't listened to that have

Great Lyrics
Great production
Great Intrumentals
Great Personalities

Like rock?
Portishead
TV On The Radio
The Flaming Lips
The National

Like Conscious Hip-Hop?
Fashawn
Kendrick Lamar
Brother Ali
Immortal Technique
Lupe Fiasco
Madvillany
Blu Exile
Danny Brown

Like r&b?
Van Hunt
Frank Ocean
The Weekend"
Sister Weekend

Like metal?
Opeth
Cult Of Luna
Kamelot
Shining
Mastodon

Like Synth-Pop or Dark Electronica?
Crystal Castles
LCD Soundsystem
Flying Lotus

Like Avant Garde?
Matana Roberts

Like Industrial Hip-Hop?
Death Grips
Shabazz Palaces

Just a few off the top of my head. If you want more genres let me know.

LOL...now who's being prejudiced? Why would you assume that I don't listen to new music? Because I'm over a certain age? grandpa

Here's a few of the artists that I listen to...

Janelle Monae

Bruno Mars

Anthony Hamilton

Mint Condition

Solange Knowles

Ceelo Green

Martin Luther

Robert Randolph and the Family Band

The artists you listed are your subjective opinion...just like mine are,

Like I said in the other thread, we didn't have to "hunt" for good music like a needle in a haystack either. lol

I also love classical music, bollywood, some country, gospel, new age, blues, some jazz and classic rock too so you're gonna have to pick somebody else to stereotype.

The day when I'm gonna like Frank Ocean or Opeth is never coming because it simply isn't my taste in music...if that's your taste then more power to ya. shrug

I was waiting for you to post some videos.....now that you have done that I will check 'em out.

Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

The videos you posted to start this conversation, were considered "mainstream" in their day. So I thought that's what this conversation was about.

I'm more than familiar with several artists and their music on the list you've just provided and "mainstream" in today's musical culture...they ain't!

They're in a group we "elitists" do recognize as good because we know good music when we hear it. Our contempt however, where they happen to be concerned is the simple fact...they are NOT what is considered mainstream...when they very well should be!

But aren't because what is considered "mainstream" is the garbage...they do not do - can't and aren't - getting the recognition they rightfully deserve because the airwaves are entirely too heavily polluted in the "mainstream" with crap that's far too often defended as the whole of "mainstream" "modern" music by some youngsters...whenever we "elitists" happen to look down our noses upon it. geek

You must not listen to ''other'' stations then lol

LOTS of these artists are played on radio. Just not on top 40 radio... y'all do know there's a rock, alt rock, hip-hop, industrial etc. Station? lol and those have a top 40 list of their own. These artists are a big deal on a lot of those radio stations. Each genre of music has bands who are hella known in their genre. And too me that is still seen as somewhat mainstream.

And some artists on my list like Kendrick Lamar, Frank Ocean, Miguel, Lupe Fiasco, even The Flaming Lips. They have had top 40 hits, had platinum selling albums, and crossed over to pop stations. They not have per say dozens of top 10 hits. But they have had a few huge hits on top 40 radio. And everyone knows who they are... i see that as pretty mainstream smile even stuff like Radiohead is mainstream.

They may not have dozens of top 40 hits. But, they have number 1 albums. Play at awards shows, and are known by most people.

I'm not sure where you are, but about 90% of American cities don't have the variety of stations you seem to have in your area -- I live in a major metropolitan area, and we have about three Top 40 stations, one or two country stations, a college station with insanely poor coverage, a few adult contemporary-ish stations, a really sad urban station that posts really embarassing debunked news on their Facebook page, and one hipster-y station that plays some of the artists you list above. However, if you're out and about, it's unlikely you'll hear the latter anywhere. At the gym, at the pool, etc., all it is is the shitty Top 40 stations, and it's pretty fucking annoying to hear that shit everywhere you go. Now, why some of these places don't configure themselves a Spotify or Last.fm station, or get a Sirius subscription, I have no idea. That's really the main thing that annoys me about Top 40 -- it's unavoidable, even if you know where to find good music.

And I see all of your creations as one perfect complex
No one less beautiful
Or more special than the next

My town has 2 Top 40 pop stations, 2 rap/hip hop stations, 1 adult contemporary, 5 college stations (1 classical, 1 jazz, 1 random music, 2 public), 2 Christian contemporary pop, 1 traditional Christian (ie. pipe organs and choirs), 2 country, 8 or 9 tejano/Spanish pop, a soul/R&B/blues oldies station that has church sermons/gospel on Sundays and zydeco on Tuesday afternoons, 1 urban contemporary, a Catholic radio station, a station that plays Indian (ie. Bollywood) music, a Vietnamese music station, 1 classic rock, a Radio Disney station, and some others that I don't know what they are - mostly talk, sports, and a few religious stations (non music).

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

The main focus back then was on the music and when the artists wrote the songs, they didn't write them with intentions of making a song that would be a good storyline for a video because videos back then were just an added bonus. Most of the early videos were shots of the bands on a soundstage with a few video special effects. Then some artists started getting more creative and making videos by doing things other than just performing on a sound stage in front of a camera. Lots of videos back then had absolutely nothing to do with the lyrics such as Eurythmics in the pasture with the cow and The Fixx coming down that tunnel with Doberman dogs.

Music itself back then was mainly about entertaining and escapism. It was fantasy and art. It wasn't reality and it wasn't intended to be reality. Nowadays, damn near everything is about reality from music to TV and that's why things are so dull these days. We listened to music back then to escape our problems for a little while and the videos helped us to escape also. It was more about escaping for a little while and having fun than anything else. But songs weren't written from their beginning stages with hopes of making a great video for them the focus back then was where it should be, on making the best song possible. The video came later (if one was even made because a lot of artists didn't even make videos). Nowadays, damn near everyone makes a video for their song, even those hard to find artists which I see as ridiculous anyway since video channels no longer play videos anymore and there's no shows on the regular networks such as "Friday Night Videos".

True. I remember being kid watching USA's Night Flight and being mesmorized by the visual imagery.

This video for the New Fontier used to trip me out. It really was music videos that exposed me to other music besides funk, disco, and soul. From 79 to 83, it really was new frontier for music video. After that, they started to get bigger budgets and became formulized.

Even back in the day everyone knew that those Bonnie Tyler vidoes were over the top cheese. That's what made the 80's so fun, everything was done with tongue firmly planted in cheek.

There, that's better. cool

If Lady Gaga, Rihanna, or Katy Perry tried to do a remake/reboot of the Bonnie Tyler classic, it would definitely be more controversial because occult symbolism is too "in your face" in the 2010's. At least in the 1980's, Bonnie was more implict.

That said, looking back, that song and, later Stacy's Mom, are creepy considering the fact that older women have been arrested for having sex with kids. So no fun in playing those songs anymore. confused

I had totally forgotten about "Night Flight". That was back in the days when the local channels used to actually go off the air around 1 a.m. or 2 a.m. and I would flip through the few cable channels we had back then (we only had WTBS, WGN, and USA back then other than the local channels) and try to find something on TV. I had never heard of the songs on "Night Flight" so I would usually turn the sound down on my TV and just have the picture on to keep me company while I would browse through the radio looking for songs to record. "Night Flight" had some really strange looking images in their videos. I remember some of them looking downright scary looking. lol Once WTBS started airing "Night Tracks", I started tuning into to that because they played songs I had actually heard before plus they had a huge variety of not only pop/rock videos but also a few R&B videos as well.

Andy is a four letter word.
