I just don't think she's relevant in the 21st century. She had her time and no one can say she isn't an icon of her era, but she's no legend. Some of her diehards are still there, but there's way too much apathy where she's concerned when it comes to the GP. And she was never really a major international force. There are plenty of regions throughout the world who have only barely heard of her.
There's a reason why she hasn't been considered for this. In the end, everything came full circle back to the way it was in the very early 80's: Janet is just Michael's sister. He's the infamous, forever culturally relevant member of the Jackson family who changed the game completely, while she was just one of the more successful spinoff's of that family tree.
If she ever does get inducted, it probably won't be for another 10-20 years. I bet there are over a dozen other acts who'll be considered before she does.

Actually Janet outsold Michael in the 90's, in fact, her sales in the 90's outsold Michael's biggest decade ... the 80's. Virgin Records did sign her to the biggest deal in history for a female artist for a reason and unlike Mariah and Whitney, she lived up to her contract. The woman is a legend.

I hear you, but if they hold the Super Bowl against her, they shouldn't be inducting any male acts whose titties we've seen. (Which is, of course, almost all of them.) The Hall of Fame committee is already viewed as not liking women very much, and getting their knickers in a knot over the Superbowl would only worsen the perception. Plus you would think that doing something like that would fit right in with rock's history of being subversive and freaking out all the pearl-clutching Puritans who collectively shat themselves every time a musician does something remotely unorthodox...
However, I do think the people leading this campaign could have written a much better letter. For one thing, it should have focused more on Janet's influence than record sales. It should have also focused on her being one of the first among ultra-famous musicians to tackle issues like gay rights and rape in her music. And I see all of your creations as one perfect complex

The Velvet Underground never had a top 40 song or album IN ANY COUNTRY! - Yet they were inducted for their lasting influence and deservedly so. The Rock N Roll hall of fame is not about popularity or album sales otherwise Celine Dion or Tom Jones would be in there.
Janet may not be a big deal to you - but her influence in R&B, new jack swing and dance music is undeniable. She may not be a legend to you – but to many people she is.
But to be honest I think this whole petition is a bit desperate from Janet fans (I'm one of them). If she gets in then great.. if not oh well... shit happens

Her worldwide record sales are over 100,000,000--no inflation required or needed. Before you go jumping on a bandwagon that has no legs to stand on, you should probably ponder what it is that you're going to say. A quick internet search will reveal her worldwide sales to you, but since you're either too feeble-minded to go looking, or just not so "terribly interested"...

ok where do i start....shes not relevant yet her name is STILL constantly mentioned in comparison to today's young female artists.her influence is all obvious and the terms legend, icon are used to describe her which means even if you dont think she's one, there are people who do.the rock and roll hall of fame is in ohio, which is in america so im not gonna even get into the 'shes not known in other countries" bs.i understand that since mj's death fans like to overlook the fact that for the last couple decades he was basically a parody of himself and one of the most ridiculed individuals in the history of entertainment, sorry but jaet's career stands on its own.now back to the topic, how many of the people who are in the hall is still relevant?

I don't understand why people care about the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame or who is or is not in it. The original idea of rock was rebellion. Some people tried to ban it in the beginning, or got acts like Pat Boone to do sanitised versions of rock songs. There's nothing rebellious about a museum or being called "Sir Mick Jagger" either. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

You don't think she is relevant in the 21st century? Have you seen the new crop of pop stars currently permeating the scene today (the female ones in particular)? You'd have to be blind not to see Janet's blatant and obvious influence over 90% of them. And I say this as not just a fan, but as someone with common sense. LOOK FAMILIAR?
I love how you so flippantly dismiss her as "one of the more successful spinoffs of the Jackson family tree", as if any of her other siblings have even come close to matching her solo success. Have you forgotten that, for a time, Janet was outselling, out-record-dealing and out everything-ing Michael? Yes, he will always and forever be THE standard in pop music, but to toss off all that Janet has accomplished as just some random success story from the Jackson family is insane. I guess relevance is in the eye of the beholder, but I think you need to open yours a little wider if you don't think that Janet Jackson has any relevance in the 21st century. I'd dare say that 1989's Rhythm Nation 1814 is one of the most still-relevant albums to come out of the '80s, particularly in regard to everything still happening in the world today (mass murdering of children, prejudice and bigotry, homelessness, educational issues, societal and political injustice, etc.). That's not delusion or inflating the stats, it's fact. Read and/or watch the news.
As for her reverting back to being "Michael's little sister", well, which planet do you live on? She is still the artist known for her innovative videos, chart-busting singles and massive world tours. Just ask any of the many artists/celebs still sampling her music (Kendrick Lamar, Drake, Jeff Bradshaw ft. Marshia Ambrosius, NeYo), Tweeting about her (Adam Levine, Adam Lambert, Britney Spears, Justin Bieber, Kourtney Kardashian), or just generally awaiting her return to music. Also, as far as MJ goes, well, she came out from underneath his shadow a LONG time ago, and there never was any turning back. Her appeal is global, regardless of whether or not you think it's not as far-reaching as it is. She's toured most continents, had various fan clubs that span the globe and she still has a global fanbase.
You are right when you say that there is a "reason" she hasn't yet been selected for the Rock Hall, but the "reason" is a political one--period. What with who they've already inducted, the fact that Janet remains without even one nomination in 7 years is ridiculous, and it has nothing to do with not being "relevant". Sorry.
**Here are just SOME of the stats which attest to the fact that Janet Damita Jo Jackson should have been inducted into the RNR HOF a long time ago:
Janet was the first female to have 5 consecutive #1 albums, and the first to produce six top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 from a single album. She was the first female artist to debut in the top 10 of the Hot 100 with the single "Runaway". She was the first artist to have 7 singles from one album peak within the top 5 of the Hot 100. She was also the...
ALSO:
--Aretha Franklin is the only female artist with more R&B #1s than Janet
--Janet is the only member of her family to be nominated for an Academy Award (she co-wrote and co-produced her Oscar nominated #1 hit "Again"), and "That's the Way Love Goes" is the longest-running #1 song by any incarnation of any Jackson family act--solo OR group
--"All For You" became the first (and only) single in music history to be added to every possible American radio station in its first week. Janet ruled over 4 formats, Top 40, crossover, rhythmic and urban radio, no one has ever ruled over let alone 3 formats --"All For You" became the first single to be added to every possible station, in the US, Japan, Asia, France and South Africa in its first week

I did do "a quick internet search". The most comprehensive list was provided by Wikipedia and all the references to her "worldwide sales" at least were just links to PR nonsense with nothing to back it up. Can you provide links to something better yourself? The US sales numbers seemed quite believable, but the worldwide sales numbers seemed simply made up (14 million for, both, Control and Rhythm Nation worldwide? What a nice round figure those both albums have ended up selling! Wonder how that came about...).
Even with the sales figures in Wikipedia the total sales don't add up to more than 70 million copies of her albums. And like stated, that's highly questionable.

Janet's biggest sellers have never even been recertified stateside, so there's no telling what their true current sales tallies are. The janet. album alone has likely surpassed the 10 million mark in the US. "Get up off that grey line"

for real, it's been that way for years
the MJ/Janet fans took- over a while ago because...........well, I guess they have no place else to go
don't get me wrong, I think Janet is the 2nd most talented Jackson and since she is still alive I guess she would have to be the most talented Jackson alive now
but she is no better than Brittney, Miley, Justin, Backstreet Boys, etc.
why not make a "Pop Music Hall of Fame"?? I would vote for her to be in that, but not Rock n Roll

The Rock N Roll HOF is not exclusive to rock musicians. Many non-rock acts have been inducted. And if Madonna is in there (who is pop), then there is no way that Janet shouldn't be. She's never even been nominated, which is just crazy. "Get up off that grey line"

i knew it would happen, they have no legit argument why janet should not be in the hall so they start trying to use bullshit logic...she only sold 70 million records not 100, well jimmy and terry should get all the credit, she is not well known in east bubblefuck england. bottom line janet is more successful, influencial and iconic than a hell of alot of the artists thats in the hall.

of course Janet will eventually make it into the RR Hall Of Fame, but there are too many great old-timers that are ahead of here. She is no Prince or MJ to be inducted on their first year of eligibility, there aren't that many artists in that caliber frankly, there is no shame in that. But she will get in, no doubt.

“The thing about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,” Dolenz says in this video Q&A, “it’s a wonderful organization. I’ve actually done quite a bit of charity work for the foundation. It’s a wonderful organization, but it’s a private organization. It’s like a golf club. . That means entry into the hall — founded by a group that included record executives Ahmet Ertegun and Seymour Stein along with Rolling Stone founder Jann Wenner — is predicated on personal choices, not popularity. . “These three gentlemen said we want to start a private club,” Dolenz adds. “We gonna call it the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and we’re going to let in who we want. And, like a golf club, they have every right to do that. It’s not a democratic, popular vote, or record sales or every person in the music industry voting. No, it’s a private club. They have the right to let in who they want — or not.” ~ Micky Dolenz 2013 Go to 2:20 [Edited 2/25/14 17:35pm] You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B.
