Wow Justin killed it on Fallon last night

He performed Not A Bad Thing from his 20/20 experience

The song was a dreamy pop R&B joint... Slow cooker. A little Maxwell meets Prince. The keyboards and horns on this live performance were sick. His band was tight... and a killer hook. Definitely google it for the live performance

This dude has really come a long way. Thumbs up to him

Sort of odd to see a guy doing the bass part with a synthesizer and see him doing nothing else than the bass part.

edit - oh, there was another guy behind him playing the other keyboard parts. That's a huge band.

I always get the feeling his bands are so professional, there isn't much for him to do.

I like some of his music, but his voice isn't very strong and he doesn't stand out of the rest of the band.

Especially in this clip, it feels like the backup singers do most of the work.

So no, i don't see the Maxwell meets Prince vibe.

Nice song though.

Well there is no doubt that his bands over the last several years have been exceptional. However, that's not a negative. The guy likes and works with quality musicians and singers. I like Justin's voice. He stays in his lane and knows his vocal strengths and weaknesses. He is a very strong song writer and has evolved into quite a charasmatic entertainer. Much in the way Prince's performance of a Fury on SNL a couple of years ago, JT is clearly also into the visual. The lighting, background singers, small horn section... Dude is deadly serious about his artistry.

Also when I referred to the Prince meets Maxwell I was talking about the song, keyboards, lyric (Maxwell), and horns (prince). He obviously doesn't look like either of them.

It was very well done.

He has come a long way.

Timbaland + Sony + a wealth of talented musicians, singers, dancers, etc.

Dude's voice is mediocre to me. His songs are mediocre at their core. Slick production, great arrangements and a big ass band make him sound better. On his own, he's unimpressive to me.

I woouldn't even say Justin's name in the same sentence as Maxwell's without the words "is not on the level of" in the middle of them. That thin-voiced parody singer can't sing nowhere near Maxwell. What a joke.

I don't doubt his passion, love or appreciation for R&B music.

I just doubt his abilities.

I repeat the song sounds like a Prince meets Maxwell mashup.... You guys are so busy trying to shit on Justin and diminish him your not even understanding what was actually being said.

Justin obviously is not Prince (although Prince clearly is a major influence) and no he is not the crooner or stylst that Maxwell is.

The song however has the lush harmonies, dreamy melody, keyboards, and horns that P and Max incorporate. It's obvious from listening to the song that he is a fan of each.

While he may be listening to both, he is clearly on the level of neither. I just don't think he's that talented. I think his popularity and likeability mask his weak ass voice and big musical productions make him seem better than he is.

I heard what you said and understood. I just don't think as much of him as you do.

Ok but here's the thing BK.... I never said or even implied he was as talented as either. I said he did a good job on Fallon said why I thought he did and described the song as sounding like a Prince Maxwell mash-up.

In any case yes I do think he is significantly more talented than what you give him credit for

Well LOL back, because apperently not to me.

Like said, I like some of his songs, I just don't think he is all that and that's mostly because of his voice. It stays very safe, between the lines of small range.

I've watched his futuresex show, amazing show, because the production blows you away, not Justin Timberlake.

What? WTF are you talking about? He HAS that already. His band DOES THAT. HE DOES have a tight ass band that makes him sound good no matter what he does. WTF are you talking about? He ain't no damn acoustic act. He ain't touring with just a guitar doing singer/songwriter shit.

I swear the Timberlake/Thicke dick-riding around here is pathetic.

I guess all they have to do is show up and be white and they are declared winning.

Whatever.

Justin has a great band. You could take that same band and they would make most mediocre singer sound better.

Same thing I say, JT is well-sourrounded as an artist, his production team & live band provide him some nice sounds using organs, bass and back up vocals, but him, as a solo singer, lack something, his voice fits pop jams, but his high register is so whiny, I don't think there's any bit of Maxwell in him.

Yeah I didn't get the band comment... Which is why I chose to ignore it.

It's not a race thing for me though. I liked JTs performance the other night, and like Pharell's Happy and Bruno's Locked out of Heaven a lot

I do think that hip hop has and is damaging R&B and has narrowed what is considered R&B and is now categorized as pop.

It's a shame IMO

The other day I was watching some of JTs futuresex era performances, the dude got charisma, and he's a good entertainer, but why I never dug him so much is the fact that if you put him alone on stage, give him an electric guitar he just can't entertain you, his shows always feature hip hop dancers and all and that's THE VERY SAME FORMULA OF SHOWS Britney, JB and everybody in the pop scene uses, n don't get me started with the song playback, JT's 20/20 era was very organized and artistic and I admit it, his album features some good sections in terms of music and production, as well as Futuresex (Like GUN said a while ago, you listen to that album only for production and it can surprise you).

I guess this isnt bad, he has a good team and that's it, I guess what we look for nowadays is an artist with the charisma of Prince or D Angelo, an artist who can blow your mind with his talent as a sole individual, JTs work and all is so BAND-ish, especially when he comes to Fallon, The Roots are always there supporting him, I guess JT is becomaing more like a band.

Thicke and Bruno don't have that.

I agree with everything you said. The Timberlake/Thick dick-riding is just appreciation of R&B music though. Did people hate this much on KC and the Sunshine Band? If it crosses over to the R&B charts............so what????!!!!!

Sometimes I wonder though what Mike Scott thinks. Is he happier being in Justin's band or was he happier as a member of the NPG. I bet the money is nice though.

I want to order some of his Sauza 901 Tequila though.
