Why Janet's not selling Ever since Al4U her sales have went down.Damita Jo just wasn't great. But her last 2 didn't get much radioplay. Discipline sold only 500,000 copies. Is it music quality or mediaplay that's keeping Janet down?
With the stratedgy and Mtv do you think she can do another Control? Working up a purple sweat.

I don't think the Super Bowl incident had anything to do with it. I don't want your rhythm without your rhyme

The newer albums (Discipline, 20YO...) just arent that good overall. This is coming from a fan all the way back from Dream Street. These recordings have a lot of filler material, too many songs, too many "interlude" and "skit" annoyances that her fan base should have grown out of years ago, and many have.
Her titties on network television have nothing to do with her sales. It's a difficult thing sometimes as a critical fan to fess up and just say, "hey, this just isn't good".

In Europe we only laughed about the nipple, but she's not selling here anymore either.
Her last records weren't just very strong, i'm a big fan, but beside some songs (Feedback, Rock with u) they didn't make much of an impact with me. Besides that, i was never a fan of her being so sexual all the time. It was cool on the Janet. album, later it just became very boring.

Each album sold less and less. "Janet" was her peak period. She never topped it.

I've talked a lot of shit about Janet's post-80s output, but I actually enjoyed many of the songs on Discipline.

Cause she hit her peak in the 90's just like Prince and Madonna and Michael hit it in the 80's, every artist has their "honeymoon period" Janet was big for her time but as times changed new YOUNGER ladies came out, she was viewed as OLD NEWS, seem reason no one gives a crap about Mariah, they will always sell to their base audience, they will sell out shows etc...but give it up with the idea of platnum albums and number one hits and across the board coverage.
AGE is the number one reason, the Superbowl thing mattered for about a month, kind of as long as people "were united" after 9/11, sounds good on paper but lets be real that shit ended right away. Plus the last few albums are not good at all, sorry but they aint, they are disposable, phoned in, they all sound as if they are the same long album, and TIMES CHANGE, when was the last time PRINCE sold a record? 10 years ago? and before that when? the very early 90's. Janet had her day let it go. I have no interest in album sale comparisons. If the product isn't good to me, it just isn't good to me. Katie Kinisky: "So What Are The Latest Dances, Nell?"

thing is america has the attention span of about two to three months, her sales were effected initially with the product out, however, i gotta admit it, the constant "jackson thing" of going on tv and doing interviews about it doesnt help at all it keeps the story alive which is a JACKSON thing and we all know that.
Here is a breakdown of why she is slipping
10% of the issue may be the superbowl 20% of the issue is the product not being good 10% Beyonce Rihanna etc 60% HER AGE she is 45? or something like that "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

Yeah I should've worded it better, the Super Bowl didn't play a BIG hand in it. But a small portion can be "blamed" on it. But yeah her constant interviews trying to deny or make it that she was a victim (Jackson trademark from MJ on down) didn't help endear her to...anyone. Not in the U.S. and not overseas either (she didn't promote her albums much outside the U.S. after 2001). Plus add this: overtly and tiring sexual lyrics, the interludes and her moans.

No one wants to be in the Janet Jackson business anymore. There are younger, nastier freak shows on the block.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
and of course i left out BLOATED CD's, meaning stop filling the albums up with....Filler, she failed to get out of the 90's mindset, filling up cds with skits and bathroom breaks and moans and phone calls, this was something that she didnt start, i blame hip hop albums for this, BUT she and Prince did their fair share of them at least Prince but the 80 minute albums to bed. mostly her age, as you do in the above. Pop music is a young person's game, and Janet Jackson does not have a voice/vocal talent that'll allow her to go sing jazz or opera or even star on Broadway, letting her extend her career. I also wonder, LD: do you think her choice of music producer has an effect on her career? It's not like Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are popular either.

As much as right wing conservatives tried to make Nipplegate into Mt. Everest out of an anthill, the main reason Janet Jackson went downhill was because her later albums just weren't that good. She dropped notcieably more in sales than her contempoararies, but even Madonna and Mariah Carey were going downhill sales-wise during the 2000's, and the younger generation had their own idols in Beyonce, Britney Spears, Chrsitina Aguilera, Pink, Alicia Keys, Mya, Kelly Clarkson and later on Rihanna, Lady GaGa, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, and now Miley Cyrus. In fact, Madge and Mimi are looked at by today's young music fans as their parent's music, and even other people are talking about "that new chick who sounds like Mariah" (Ariana Grande).
