So When A Modern Star Beats Your Favorites Records You're going to learn that records and sales don't mean shit. I know peeps on the org are very guarded with their favorite stars records. But, the truth it someday they will be beat.

You'll have to get back with us in another10 - 20 years, when we can actually gauge the modern artist's record sales with the significance that makes real music LAST, throughout time! I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

Sales are just fancy bullshit. It doesn't matter that The Beatles or Michael had blah blah hits or sold blah. It matters that their music inspired people, that it was unique, that it had a sound and personality. Who knows, who cares how many copies Sgt Pepper sold? Sticky Fingers? Blood on the Tracks? Then somewhere somehow everything began to revolve around numbers and everyone HAD to know that Thriller was the best selling LP ever. Good for him, but this obsession with sales figures also lead to the downfall of Mr. Jackson. [Edited 2/7/14 19:57pm]

yeah Michael Jackson was more concerned with sales than the music and it showed. sad.

this reminds me of how pissed off I was when Titanic surpassed the record of StarWars/ET/Jurassic Park

Ah! Shut up. Dangerous and HIStory are better albums than Thriller.

What a load of BS. How is Thriller responsible for people falsely accusing him or him having a quack doctor that would eventually kill him??

Not that I hate MJ, I'm a big big big fan of his talent & showmanship & musicanship. But the late was very concerned about sales, in his Bad documentary, I remember that the only thing him & his team cared about was how to follow a big success like Thriller, like, sales-wise. I consider this a problem because MJ had the right to think about that when nobody cared about Off The Wall, so he learned things and brought 'em Thriller, he had every right, he was talented & amazing and little that they gave a shit... come to think about it, having a bigger look around you and planning for music videos & how you wanna make your next album the next biggest sensation all over the world is the right thing to do when you failed before... But then when you're MJ in 1985, you should start focusing on your music now that everybody knows you & is willing to buy your albums.. Never said Bad is a bad album, it's my favorite MJ album after Thriller but hey he was thinking a lot comercially around that era... [Edited 2/9/14 7:25am]

I have yet to talk to anyone who wants to discuss janet and Madonna songs on a technical level musically. What jam & Lewis, Nile Rodgers, Stuart price, the frenchie did was admirable, and even creative usages of samples, instruments and merging genres in the 90s for janet [Edited 2/9/14 7:47am]

My favorite records/artists have never been in the running to amass huge sales and Im rather happy bout that. The Most Important Thing In Life Is Sincerity....Once You Can Fake That, You Can Fake Anything.

Agreed...How many grammys does Prince have? 6? 7?Some of these fools get that many in one or two years. Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

the Oscars still have a reasonably big amount of credit left...the Grammys are now nothing more than a parade for the Billboard darlings...

> I tend to agree and I don't think it's a secret to anyone post-Thriller who isn't one of Michael's more zealous fans. JK Rowling (The Harry Potter Series) says she uses Michael as an example of how not to react to a career that blows up beyond expectations. That being said he definitely had his moments ("The Way You Make Me Feel", "Man in the Mirror", "They Don't Care About Us" and for me "Stranger in Moscow") but it could've been much more had he put out more adult, sleek and sexy stuff that built on what made "Off The Wall" and "Thriller" so, for lack of a better word, thrilling.

The upbeat tracks on Dangerous were sexy as shit, we wouldn't be having this conversation had he still looked the same as Victory tour and put that out. I do think more romantic ballads in the 90's ala Off The Wall, Destiny, Thriller eras wouldn't have hurt at all, as long as we didn't have another YANA type of cheesy video, but I do love the humanitarian and emotional stuff he put out. I really believe his changing appearance may have impacted his confidence when it came to being hot on his ballads later on, but it was really nice he revisited that in the 00's, though I wish Fall Again was completed.
Back on topic, I don't think most people know or care about numbers of anyone and it's a small population if you look at the bigger picture. And those who do, have the attention span of a fly and don't care to know who did what before and are more present than orgers [Edited 2/10/14 7:19am]

I think it's great and natural. And as much sh*t Rihanna gets from old-timers, it's clear she is already an Icon in the making. To me she and Adele already outshine a lot of 80's and 90's female supposed legends. And they are still so young they will easily continue to keep on breaking records.
