I agree, those last songs she did with Jesse Johnson showed alot of promise. Those two songs ("Undress" and "Faraway Eyes") are from the 1988 movie 'Action Jackson',which Vanity also starred in.Throughout that year,Vanity was working on her third solo album, rumored to be titled Cherry Bomb.It is believed that Jam and Lewis were gonna produce some tracks,as well as Tony LeMans,Jesse Johnson and our very own Prince (!).Seems like it would have been a BIG album for Vanity but alas, she destroyed the master copy of the album and began her religious phase.
After Motown ,Vanity switched over to Geffen/A&M Records. In the late 80s she was working on her third solo album. The producers were crazy about it but unfortunately Vanity decided to stop being Vanity. According to Denise, she "had a conversation with God" and he told her to throw out the new album because it was sinful.
God was a bit badly-timed, wasn't he? He could have waited until Vanity had finished her album, and then they could have talked at long length. "Have a talk with God", Stevie said. Right, but I'll finish my record first!

Maya Vik, a brilliant Norwegian funk musician, recorded a song, "Oslo Knows", which is almost a cover of "The One I Love" (she mentions the song in the credits). Listen (and enjoy the beautiful clip too): http://www.youtube.com/wa...Wq6no_MmfA.
I must have missed that episode and it doesn't appear to be on Youtube How was the performance? She seems to be a mysterious artist who didn't make too many TV appearances back then.I can't recall ever seeing her perform anywhere.

This is almost 30 years ago now and I haven't seen it since, but I think I remember her being a bit stiff. Like if Susan from Vanity 6 were performing solo.

I also remember seeing her on Soul Train and performing two songs, More Than You Can Handle, which I didn't think too highly of it at the time. The other one of course was The One You Love which was one of my favorite songs at the time. It definitely should have performed much better than it actually did.
"The One You Love" was a Top 40 R&B hit, with little promotion, which proved that it could have been a massive crossover hit if it was far better pushed/promoted by the labels.
In regards to Rick James' album "saving" Motown in the early 80s, I find that hard to believe as Lionel Richie was a much bigger global star than Rick James and sold far more albums than him (on the Motown label in the 80s).
I agree, the song had all the ingredients to be a Top 10 pop smash.
