Lushus Daim
Anyone remembers her? Lushus Daim was a female R&B singer from the mid-80's. She was on the Motown\Conceited Records label and in 1985 released the album, "More Than You Can Handle" under the name "Lushus Daim & The Pretty Vain" which managed to peak at #52 on Billboard's R&B Albums chart. The first single, "The One You Love" was released and managed to peak at #65 on Billboard's R&B charts. Based on her looks (and sound), Motown was obviously trying to create another Vanity.

I remember her! I had a crush on her back then I really thought that she would make it big,but she disappeared after her 1985 debut album. This is my favorite song by her:
80s R&B flashback: "The One You Love" by Lushus Daim and the Pretty Vain (1985)
It's a great song Don't know why it didn't catch on.

She does look like a Prince protege, huh? If he had found her first,I bet he would have tried to bring her into his camp.Unlike Vanity and Apollonia, she can actually sing, too.

It doesn't seem as if she got alot of support/promotion.At that point (1985),I think Motown was more focused on Vanity and trying to make her a superstar.

So, what happened to her? Can't find anything on the internet... "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

Lushus Daim UpdateAn anonymous comment left on the "Isle of Deserted Pop Stars" blog has an update about Lushus Daim & The Pretty Vain. Apparently, the Pretty Vain was Lushus Daim's band. These days, Lushus is doing well. She's married, living in Los Angeles with 3 kids. She still sings, but only for fun now. Her daughter also sings too.

I agree. Didn't Motown even promote Vanity as Miss Audio- Visual 1984 ( whatever that means) ?

Probably just another way to capitalize on her physical appearance.

I love Vanity but honestly...I don't think her 'Wild Animal' album was very good.It wasn't the type of album that could turn her into a huge solo superstar.

'Skin on Skin' was even worse. Save for "Under The Influence". Funny, Motown pushing a Vanity clone when they had the original and weren't doing much to propel her own career.

I remember "More Than You Can Handle" but "The One You Love" I don't recall at all. Found Lushus' album online yesterday. Typical late '80s Leon Sylvers III fair. But I guess he had fallen off rather abrutply by the time Lushus came out. Why'd he leave Solar for Motown?

One thing I've noticed about Motown in the 80s...they never really brought in big name producers for their artists.Their finances were shaky at that time. Can you imagine if Motown had the money to bring in Quincy Jones to produce an El DeBarge album? It would have turned him into the solo superstar that he deserved to be.As for Vanity, she would have benefitted from having an album produced by Jam and Lewis. But again, the money wasn't there.

Motown spent a lot of money to sign her when she split from Prince and it raised eyebrows, because, well, nobody thought she had any kind of musical talent. By the mid- 80s Motown was no longer a big music force, and didn't do promotion or single selection well at all. It was a complete mess. I've read that Berry Gordy seemed to have lost interest in the company after Diana Ross left in 1981, which would explain why he sold and left the company by 1988. Vanity was also screwed by Motown. "Under The Influence" was her biggest hit and then Motown basically stopped promoting her. "Animals", which was a terrible followup single, was barely promoted except a couple of tv performances and then Motown dropped her. It's too bad-it seemed like just when she was finally figuring out what kind of vocals suited her voice, her recording career stopped. I bet her third album with Jam and Lewis would have been awesome. I still think Vanity could've had a better career if she had been on a different label that had promoted her better. The interesting thing is Vanity also appeared on El Debare's debut album, on the song "Secrets of the Night".

I agree with you,Vanity might have done better if she had signed with another label. She might have been able to get a solo deal with Warner Bros, just like Morris Day did.She needed a label that had the money to bring in some big-name producers and some surefire hit songs.Motown was having alot of financial problems in the 80s.Rick James once boasted that, his super successful 'Street Songs' album basically saved the label.

Fixed it for you. --- Well, one can't get much sexier than the cover of her album, true?

I love "The One I Love". By the way, Maya Vik, a brilliant Norwegian funk musician, recorded a song, "Oslo Knows", which is almost a cover of "The One I Love" (she mentions the song in the credits). me too It's a great track, with a hypnotic synth line and great lyrics/vocals.I can't figure out why it didn't catch on and become a hit.The only reason I can come up with is,it didn't receive the proper promotion. If it had been promoted more aggressively,I bet it would have crossed over. The song has major 'pop' appeal.

I'm gonna contact the folks at Big Break Records. They're always asking for suggestions on what CDs they should re-issue.I'm gonna suggest they release Lushus' album on CD.

I agree, those last songs she did with Jesse Johnson showed alot of promise. Those two songs ("Undress" and "Faraway Eyes") are from the 1988 movie 'Action Jackson',which Vanity also starred in.Throughout that year,Vanity was working on her third solo album, rumored to be titled Cherry Bomb.It is believed that Jam and Lewis were gonna produce some tracks,as well as Tony LeMans,Jesse Johnson and our very own Prince (!).Seems like it would have been a BIG album for Vanity but alas, she destroyed the master copy of the album and began her religious phase.
