they are great, of course they are..

that is why it is really strange if they are not actually playing those instruments at a live performance...

That is not "worthy" for a great rock band.

More X-Factor, Pop Idol, auto-tuned, talentless crap in the charts....or more bands like RHCP? I know what would get my vote. And who cares if they mimmed the half a song they were allowed to do during the Super Bowl halftime show....it wasn't even their halftime show, and they've given countless great live performances during their career. And who the hell watches the Super Bowl for stirring musical performances anyway, its a game of football ffs....!!

It's called TV. The NFL enforces playback recording, for all their halftime shows to eliminate the chance for sound glitches.

Do you get this pissed when you watch a movie, where the actor's own voice, has replaced the recording used during filming?

I'll throw you a little life lesson here: 99.9% of ALL things you see reproduced on any size screen... is FAKE! Unless it's a personal, home movie recorded with a camcorder or cell phone camera. Even then, once you reproduce it on any other screen in front of any other person, they too can cry fake or get upset about the sound of voices/instruments on said recording.

The NFL does NOT allow live instruments during the superbowl. Never has. They dont want iffy sound or something going wrong.

My point is pretty obvious. They were forced to mime by the NFL.

So you should have titled the thread: NFL = SHIT, and that would have made a lot more sense. But to dog any performer, who's options were: 'mime your instruments or do not perform at all,' is just complaining for the sake of complaining. I would encourage you to find a more positive release, for such frustration.

Having said that, if you hate the Red Hot Chili Peppers, feel free to spread your hate. But if you're going to base your judgement that they are "shit," based on the NFL's live television rules, people will call bullhsit on you.

Geez. So superficial. As if one 4 minute playback performance would eradicate everything they did in the past 30 years.

Red Hot Chili Peppers on Super Bowl performance: Yep, we faked it

By Dana Ford, CNN
updated 8:55 AM EST, Wed February 5, 2014

(CNN) -- Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea just gave itaway, confirming what everyone already suspected.

The rock group's halftime performance at Super Bowl XLVIII was pre-recorded. The band's guitars were not plugged in.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers performed Sunday night alongside Bruno Mars.

"When we were asked by the NFL and Bruno to play our song Give It Away at the Super Bowl, it was made clear to us that the vocals would be live, but the bass, drums, and guitar would be pre-recorded.

"I understand the NFL's stance on this, given they only have a few minutes to set up the stage, there a zillion things that could go wrong and ruin the sound for the folks watching in the stadium and the t.v. viewers. There was not any room for argument on this, the NFL does not want to risk their show being botched by bad sound, period," Flea wrote Tuesday on the band's website.

He said that he and his bandmates -- Anthony Kiedis, Josh Klinghoffer and Chad Smith -- thought long and hard about doing the show given those conditions.

"We decided that, with Anthony singing live, that we could still bring the spirit and freedom of what we do into the performance, and of course we played every note in the recording specially for the gig. I met and spoke with Bruno, who was a beautiful dude, a real talented musician, and we worked out something that seemed like it would be fun," Flea wrote.

He said the band was not trying to trick anyone.

The bassist continued: "For the actual performance, Josh, Chad, and I were playing along with the pre recorded track so there was no need to plug in our guitars, so we did not.

"Could we have plugged them in and avoided bumming people out who have expressed disappointment that the instrumental track was pre recorded? Of course easily we could have and this would be a non-issue. We thought it better to not pretend. It seemed like the realest thing to do in the circumstance.

"I am grateful to the NFL for having us. And I am grateful to Bruno, who is a super talented young man for inviting us to be a part of his gig. I would do it all the same way again."

I'm sure that this goes on more often than people realize.Millions of people watch the SuperBowl,so the performance has to be 100% perfect.Nothing can go wrong. If a band plays "live" and there are problems with the sound, the acoustics,or whatever...that could ruin a performance. The Red Hot Chili Peppers chose to play it safe.

They didn't choose anything, according to all the reports.

Wireless instruments/mics have no safety hazard, so any band doing a big budget thing should have issues in that regard.

Nice article. This explains a lot. All of these are very legitimate reasons to mime at the half time show. I was merely pointing out, that miming one performance does not take away their ability to play live. It's just another cog in the wheel of TV's aim for perfection. As well as their consideration, of saving the bands, from any embarrasing technical difficulties.

If bands did choose to perform live, we'd have more incidents like Roseanne Barr's National Anthem. Not to mention, more posts on the org, bitching about how bad the performance was, as opposed to them simply miming it/saving face.

Thanks for posting the link to this article.

Here's Flea's full message to fans:

.

"Dear everybody,

When we were asked by the NFL and Bruno to play our song Give It Away at the Super Bowl, it was made clear to us that the vocals would be live, but the bass, drums, and guitar would be pre-recorded. I understand the NFL's stance on this, given they only have a few minutes to set up the stage, there a zillion things that could go wrong and ruin the sound for the folks watching in the stadium and the t.v. viewers. There was not any room for argument on this, the NFL does not want to risk their show being botched by bad sound, period.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers stance on any sort of miming has been that we will absolutely not do it. The last time we did it (or tried to) was in the late 80's, we were thrown off of 'The Top Of the Pops' television program in the U.K. during rehearsals because we refused to mime properly, I played bass with my shoe, John played guitar atop Anthony's shoulders, and we basically had a wrestling match onstage, making a mockery of the idea that it was a real live performance.

We mimed on one or two weird MTV shows before that and it always was a drag. We take our music playing seriously, it is a sacred thing for us, and anyone who has ever seen us in concert (like the night before the Super Bowl at the Barclays Center), knows that we play from our heart, we improvise spontaneously, take musical risks, and sweat blood at every show. We have been on the road for 31 years doing it.

So, when this Super Bowl gig concept came up, there was a lot of confusion amongst us as whether or not we should do it, but we eventually decided, it was a surreal-like, once in a life time crazy thing to do and we would just have fun and do it. We had given this a lot of thought before agreeing to do it, and besides many a long conversation amongst ourselves, I spoke with many musician friends for whom I have the utmost respect, and they all said they would do it if asked, that it was a wild trippy thing to do, what the hell. Plus, we the RHCP all love football too and that played a big part in our decision. We decided that, with Anthony singing live, that we could still bring the spirit and freedom of what we do into the performance, and of course we played every note in the recording specially for the gig. I met and spoke with Bruno, who was a beautiful dude, a real talented musician, and we worked out something that seemed like it would be fun.

We recorded a track for the day, just banged one out from our hearts that was very like in spirit to the versions we have been playing live the last few years with our beloved Josh on guitar.

For the actual performance, Josh, Chad, and I were playing along with the pre recorded track so there was no need to plug in our guitars, so we did not. Could we have plugged them in and avoided bumming people out who have expressed disappointment that the instrumental track was pre recorded? Of course easily we could have and this would be a non-issue. We thought it better to not pretend. It seemed like the realest thing to do in the circumstance. It was like making a music video in front of a gazillion people, except with live vocals, and only one chance to rock it. Our only thought was to bring the spirit of who we are to the people.

I am grateful to the NFL for having us. And I am grateful to Bruno, who is a super talented young man for inviting us to be a part of his gig. I would do it all the same way again.

We, as a band, aspire to grow as musicians and songwriters, and to continue to play our guts out live onstage for anyone who wants to get their brains blown out.

Sincerely,

Flea"

So then what about all those Prince appearances that were "mimed" during the emancipation days because the band didnt know the material yet? I mean I understand the "holy shit" his bass wasnt plugged in, but who cares, for alot of these events especially now, they rather you didnt play live. when Bruno started honestly i didnt think he was live at first, but this is a SILLY rant, i mean are they not talented because of this? I think if this were them "headlining" the superbowl, they wouldnt have been live. I mean PRINCE "mimed" almost every appearance for "Emancipation", The Chris Rock show, he was the only that did that, Essence Awards, AMA show that time with "Billy Jack Bitch" and all that, and come on now WE ALL blast people like Rihanna that "Lypsynch" on award shows.

  • Everybody seems to hate what he likes to hate, and loves what he likes to love; i.e. You blame people for lip syncing and you forget that one of your favorite artists lip synced whole tours & performances. I'm not talking to you Joe and no need to mention names of those artists.
  • You blame artists for doing ONE thing wrong while they've been all their career amusing you with classic & good music. This is ungratitude in my opinion. Like, can you just shut up?
  • And, try to walk in their shoes, hell, ain't it hard? When you do a lot for your fans & listeners but then when you screw up ONCE or TWICE they all turn their backs. What kind of sick ass mentality is this? Try yourself to go to the studio and see what it feels like!!
  • When somebody says RHCP equals SHIT just because they were FORCED to unplugg the bass in a national big event, you just can't.... Hell.. 10 classic albums.. and they're SHIT because they had to do something not fully shameful (The vocals were live, but hey, everybody seeks the blaming).
  • The music business is a hard one, you have to do things to stay on top. You get a big gig like The Super Bowl that can rise you to Jesus popularity.. you can't refuse unplugging your BASS. Even if you turned it down, you'd regret it later.

And Honestly it was probably the biggest paycheck of their career, so whatever, it was Bruno's show, i think its lame that the media world now has taken that shine off him and put it on this lame event.
