Nobody hates Macklemore. Dude is decent on the mic. What some people hate is white privilege.
Em is a damn good MC but there are better. Every major media outlet declared him "the best" even though we know damn well most mainstreamers don't listen to enough real hip-hop to even make that claim. They listen to hip-POP. That's what Macklemore is. He's hip-POP. So, when he is rushed to the top, not because he is better than everyone else but because he is white and says all the politically correct things, its a slap in the face to the culture and some people get offended. It ain't Mack, its what Mack represents; the majority trying to force and flaunt dominance.

I don't know that much about Macklemore, but rapping about breaking down homophobia is not mainstream, and frankly, I think other rappers have been downright afraid to say anything about that. Quite the contrary.
I don't have any of his songs in my collection, but I think he's a bit of a hero for going that route.
Music, sweet music, I wish I could caress and...kiss, kiss...

Pretty much.
Yup. Even Macklemore himself said that he realize a lot of the attention he gets is because most of America see him as "safe." Dude seem to have a real grip on his current place in pop culture.
I don't hate him. He's just not that interesting to me as a rapper. Besides we know it's politics with how he's been getting all this praise. That's all.

And to top it all off, Macklemore is still technically an independent recording artist on HIS own independent record label. Smart business sense, without question.

I really don't believe this. To have the kind of push his videos got, the radio play, Billboard recognition, all the while having distribution in every Best Buy, Starbucks, and drug store...

It sounds cool, but I really don't believe it.
What's funny is that nobody here has the record handy for a quick reference to verify which label he's on
Macklemore LLC is his label but he got a LOT of help with a deal they made with an arm of Warner Music Group.. the ADA, which scoups up indy artists and give them the distribution perks of a major label signee. Macklemore LLC isn't just him and Ryan Lewis, its a small company that includes an experienced rep from the Agency group. Not discounting at all what they've accomplished, but its not exactly as if its one man who conquered the world, its a small company with the help of the tentacles of Warner Music.
BlaqueKnight hit the nail on the head. I will add though that there's a POWER.FUL gay lobby, so his white privilege coupled with THAT, Kendrick didn't stand a chance and the mainstream onslaught will continue. Don't get me twisted, I'm not a homophobe and hip hop needs to be less, but again, Mack is the guy at the right time to further the agenda.

To be honest, it always feels a little awkward/forced hearing it from Macklemore (STRAIGHT).

You should have stopped right there. Everybody and their momma, sister and brother have been on the gay rights thing since prop 8 and using it to make themselves look P.C. Welcome to 2011. Gay rights is MOST MAINSTREAM right now and to deny that is to either be oblivious to everything going on in American society right now or to be straight up lying.
I commend him for saying what he said. No "buts". (No pun)
It was a noble issue for a straight white guy to tackle when he could do what most straight white males do and just ignore it altogether. SStill, that is not his only song. He is P.C. to the fullest and that plays a huge part in his success. He is safe. The second he steps outside of being safe, he's done.

It became mainstream after Madonna did it back in the '90s.

Exactly. Clear Channel is still in place, and still requires major label money to start adding a song to national playlists.

Big difference coming from a heterosexual male rapper, rather than.. well.. Madonna.

OK, show me all the mainstream rappers/hip hop artists, taking a stand about homophobia before him.
I will happily retract my comment.
Music, sweet music, I wish I could caress and...kiss, kiss...
he looks like the lion off the wizard of oz im all 4 diversity in music i dont like rap no matter what skin color its coming from and didnt even like it when prince tried his hand at it

I really can't remember one big hit that is about gay people.
