I see your point gun.

But between me and you I don't think Grenade is THAT BAD, it's not even bad, you can't say it's the worst written song on Top 40 when you have Ke$ha, Pitbull, Katy Perry and others. Grenade is a song with a melodrama type of feel inside of it, the melody and lyrics are depressing and show the other side of love, I understand that the "catching a grenade for a girl" metaphor might sound silly but it's just the way Bruno expresses his feelings inside, besides, the first verse and the second one are normal lyrics, the chorus is the one who got people saying Bruno's lyrics are cheesy and stuff.

I even agree that it pisses me off sometimes when he screams "But darling I'd still catch a grenade for ya", I always say that's awkward love but then I realize she's his passion, we all been there once, loving a girl and tried to do anything for her and even if she never gave a crap we still love her.

Other than this, even if I'm a big stan of Bruno, Gorilla would have been a killer song because the production, the drums and the vocals were so perfect but the main subject is just so lame and unbearable.

Grenade is that bad. Just because top 40 radio may contribute worst lyrics, doesn't forgive the fact that he's a piss poor excuse for a lyrcist.

It's not just the grenade that's the problem. Every single phrase is cliche and trite.

You take that song to an english class, it would get an F just because of it's poor syntax alone.

Let's break it down

Easy come, Easy go
That's just how you live oh
Take, take, take it all
But ya never give

(so he starts off the song, with a cliche phrase, "Easy come, Easy go," and a cliche songwriting sittuation of a antoginist 'taking' and never 'giving')

Should'a known
You was trouble
From the first kiss
Had your eyes wide open,
Why were they open?

(Generic 'you was trouble from the first kiss' and he breaks he's previously established rhyme scheme. And this is not a major problem, if it was done in a clever way, but "Why were they open" is an obvious throwaway line)

Gave you all I had (more cliche)
And you tossed it in the trash, (tossed what? ambiguous statement)
You tossed it in the trash you did
To give me all your love (cliche)
Is all I ever asked
'Cause what you don't understand is
I'd catch a grenade for ya (yeah, yeah, yeah) (I actually like Grenade as imagery, it's different)
Throw my hand on a blade for ya (yeah, yeah, yeah ) (this one is just silly)
I'd jump in front of a train for ya(yeah, yeah, yeah ) (now you've gone from silly, to trite)
You know I'd do anything for ya(yeah, yeah, yeah) Oh, oh, (and entered into another cliche)
I would go through all this pain,
Take a bullet straight through my brain, (terrible rhyme and phrase)
Yes, I would die for you baby (cliche)
But you won't do the same
No, no, no, no

Black, black, black and blue (repetition of black, done out of laziness, and failure to construct a decent sentence)
Beat me till I'm numb
Tell the devil I said "hey" (really? "hey?" Not even emo bands are that bad)
When you get back to where you're from

Mad woman, bad woman, (c'mon are you even trying?)
That's just what you are, yeah,
You'll smile in my face then
Rip the brakes out my car (whoa where the hell did that come from)

If my body was on fire, ooh
You'd watch me burn down in flames (well aren't you the drama queen)
You said you loved me you're a liar
Cause you never, ever, ever did baby... (thank you captain obvious!)

Bruno, go get a Rhymming Dictionary and a copy of Highway 61 Revisited.

We are the music makers,
And we are the dreamers of dreams...

You're judging Bruno for writing this AS HE IS THE ONLY ONE in history of recorded music to write down known and cliché things? What's wrong with Cliché? It's something that was used before, you don't have to break a ground each time you write something! Stevie, Bowie, Beatles and all these guys wrote about things many others wrote & sang about DECADES before.

You're judging his metaphors, but that's just YOUR OPINION, see, all of your post reflects you, you find it unrealistic, damn sure you do and a lot of people, does that make any difference? It doesn't, the song went number one all over the world, people liked it, it has a decent sound & melody, Bruno likes it. It is for a large ammount of people unbearable, and for others it's a good song filled with emotions and feelings.

Don't go again with the cliché stuff.

This thread is about Bruno Mars...

Hence I'm judging him.

And you're defending Bruno Mars, by defending cliché' terms?

Really?

You're making comparisons to Bohemian Rhapsody?

Really?

Writing about love and lost is cliché and forgivable because it's one of the quintessential human experiences.

But using an abundance of clichés in your songwriting is LAZY.

One or two clichés in a song is forgivable. And if you're being Post modern, by all means use more.

However, this entire song is a walking cliché and infantile beyond belief.

It's not the worst song in the world.

But it is an example of bad songwriting

It's all good that you're a Stan, and think he's the Bees Knees.

I've met Bruno, he's a nice guy. I like him as a person.

But he's a shit songwriter. Is he the only one in Pop music that's bad?

Fuck no. But he's pretty bad.

I'm not making comparaisons to Queen's song, since you said that Easy Come Easy Go is a cliché word then it also goes for every other song that has that sentence!

Bruno is free to write whatever he wants to write and at the end of the day it's a matter of opinions, you don't like his songwriting it's okay man I never judged you, I just said that cliché isn't actually a problem, wether you write a ton about known and used things it's your way to do that..

He is free to write what he wants, but that isn't what we're talking about.

I'm talking purely about the rudimentry elements of decent song writing through an academic scope.

If you enjoy the music, more power to ya!

I like norwegian black metal, but it's pretty shit from an aestetic stand point of view.

And if I put it under a simiilar microscope, it would fail miserably as well.

Good songwriting is hard, and in the present state of pop music it is sadly obsolete.

But just because lyrical prowess has deteriorated within the last decade or so, purely to save a buck, doesn't destroy the staying power of a properly written song.

This is why the indie realm of music is thriving.

Once the industry begins to understand this again, it might rebound from it's mire.

We are the music makers,
And we are the dreamers of dreams...

By far i think this is THE BEST SHOW PERFORMANCE by a male artist...or at the very least since the Bad/Dangerous tours. i know you guys would mention Prince, Bobby Brown and athletic-guys who perform very well but this is PASSION in its visual form.. i really think that Justin's vocals still need so much to be perfect but concering PERFORMANCE/SHOWMANSHIP I don't think there's anybody more perfect than him THESE DAYS!

AND YES, the talk about JUSTIN BIEBER AKA Justin Drew Bieber will last for too long in this forum or outside the org... cuz we finally got the promising artist that this generation needs. So why not?

Lol. your first criticism 'Easy come, easy go" was also a lyric on Prince's '$' on Lotusflower too.

Prince once rhymed "kicking me in my heart, Tearing me all apart"

You want to talk cliche?

F indeed.

Do not get me started On P's recent song writing...

I'm really starting to believe he's finally lost the magic of lyricism.

I mean he's always had a fair amount of shit, along with his great stuff.

But the ratio as of late has purely shifted towards shit.

But the sound is at least decent.

We are the music makers,
And we are the dreamers of dreams...

Row row row your boat

gently down the stream

merrily merrily merrily merrily

life is but a dream

Sidenote: Haven't heard the song but since the poster was commenting on the somewhat infantile songwriting, thought I'd point out the similarity.

Will see if Bruno EVER has any material worth bootlegging, for decades after this year. Then "THE TRUTH" will set you free....

eye will ALWAYS think of prince like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. eye mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that prince wasn't of this earth, eye would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. prince

Bruno is one of the most talented artists to emerge in the last few years. He might not blow up like Prince did in the early 80s, but I think he'll be around for a while.
