"The Punk Singer" What's with the slew of great rock documentaries being released? Here's the latest based on the life of Courtney Love nemesis Kathleen Hanna and the whole Riot grrl movement. >

Just heard about this yesterday and really want to see it. I love music documentaries so they can keep em coming as far as I'm concerned. It's on my movies on demand, so I'll watch it soon.

I can't wait to see this movie. I love Kathleen Hanna, and my current obsession (JD Samson) is in the movie, to boot. No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.

I want to see it! I saw her live not too long ago with her new band Julie Ruin and it was so great.

CAN'T WAIT.
Bikini Kill's singles collection is my favorite punk album of the 90s hands down. And she was such a polarizing figure even among the supposedly enlightened/ liberal punk rock types, one of the only ones that seemed to be willing to question her own audience.

I just watched the movie. Anyone who even likes Kathleen Hanna a little will love it.

It was very good. I would have liked some more music content, which is my same complaint with all music docs nowadays. But her story was really compelling and she's just lovable.
The main criticism has been that is a fawning portrait by someone who obviously worships Hanna, and I think there's some truth to that. It would have been interesting to try and put all the negativity they encountered in context now. I remember their LA show in 1993 turning into a feud between the band and some of the writers of Flipside mag, probably because Kathleen said something or other they published was sexist. And there was a large contingent of people who showed up specifically to heckle them. Maybe that's fair game in punk rock, but I was really surprised how much everyone was closing ranks against them. I remember the day after, being at some show where everyone was telling the story. The women on the Flipside staff, and there were a lot of them, were especially put out by it and seemed really gleeful that they had made Kathleen cry.
That can't be the only time that happenned. It would be interesting to find some of her detractors and find out, why did they feel so strongly about it? And do they feel different now?
But it's a small complaint, the film is still quite moving. My wife was moved to tears when she heard her talking about getting started, like, "Why should I even try, no one will listen to me, no one will believe me. And then I realized... other girls will believe me."
