I had a grudge against Justin for that. Especially since he dated her once & was just as much apart of it as she was. But as much as I adore Janet. I know she did it on purpose to take the attention off of her brother. Who was being crucified by the press at the time ... It worked! But it backfired on her...Sadly her muziq career never recovered from it...But now! I feel it will and she can make a comeback. Because she is an actress as well as a mogul and the muziq industry has gotten very slutty since she departed it. So what she did is not looked upon as low anymore.

What does Michael's album sells dropping have to do with the fact that Michael still sold more than Janet during the 90's (her peak)? Yes, his album sells dropped because of his controversy/scandels but he had radio support, still sold out stadiums, and was not blacklisted like Janet was in the 00's. When he noticed his reputation in the US was tarnished he reverted his attention to his fanbase oversees and continued to build his fanbase globally which was smart. That is what Janet should have did. Mj DID eventually become blacklisted though dont give a hute what anyone says. Justin has always been phony.

But Janet never had a super large fanbase globally... like Madge, Prince, Whitney. And certainly nowhere near her brother's. There was really nowhere for her to go. Those artists, even without hits/new songs could still tour overseas and sell out venues, but Janet couldn't. Her popularity was never on the level of theirs beyond the USA.
I do think she's going to make a comeback though. But I think it'll be in the movies.

the Janet LP of 1993 sold 25,000,000 copies
I actually believe the sales of Rhythm Nation and the Janet albums have been misrepresented
Janet performed the largest selling debut solo world tour of all time
Her concerts in Japan sold out w/in a half hour tops

you're probably one of those who believes that the Thriller album sold more than 100 million
| |
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
actually I don't believe Thriller has sold 100 million copies
during it's initial run from December of 82 through the end of the Victory Tour late 1984, Thriller in its initial run sold 47 million copies
that Janet album sold worldwide, but all exclusive King of Pop fans love to discount the success that she has really had
she had a global fanbase, she had the most successful debut solo world tour of all time
word is, for one of her shows at the Tokyo Dome in Japan, she outsold all the tickets in less than 10 minutes
that's not a dream, that's fact
I'm not just a fan of MJ or Janet's.....I'm a fan of anyone who makes a genuine contribution to the arts.....

Yes and no. While she certainly wasn't on a global level like Michael and to a lesser extent the others you mentioned, she certainly did have an international fanbase and did 3 successful international tours. So she certainly could have concentrated on her international fans. But I feel though that her bond with her international fans kinda got broken with the cancellation of the AFY tour and she never quite managed to rekindle that, even though her last tour showed that with some effort she surely could repair some damage.

Good Points too. Janet had an international fanbase although it was never on the level of Madonna and Michael's

kind of ironic that for all the talk about Janet riding MJ as her means to establishing her career
it was MJ who asked Janet to appear on what would be his debut track on the HISTORY album "Scream", knowing his sister had become the quintessential female entertainer on the planet.
funny how that stuff works out
only reason I'm pointing this out, not to create division because MJ has the greatest soul/r&b album ever on wax, the greatest selling album in the record books, and the greatest video on tape, along w/greatest on stage live performance in the bag
but by 1995, Janet in terms of her stature at that point, she was on the same level as her brother when u you really look at where each person stood
Dangerous sold 22-25 million copies during it's initial run from late 1991 through 1993
the Janet LP sold 25 million around the globe
for RHYTHM NATION, she cranked out 5 singles alone that reach the top of the R&B charts (when it was still real r&b)
MJ had 3 singles combined from BAD and DANGEROUS that reached the top of the R&B charts
that's why he had her on the song SCREAM, that's why SCREAM was the debut single for HISTORY, because MJ was trying to regain the R&B audience he had lost 8 years earlier

Strange, because the percentage that lacks Thriller to reach 100 million is approximately the same as the one that lacks Janet to reach 25 million
History - 14-15 million outside the U.S.
and lol that Janet album even close to success and sales Dangerous

The hit parade doesn't last forever.EVERY artist stops selling albums after they're been in the music business for many years. The trick is to find ways to generate income and remain relevent, long after the hit records stop.Look at Madonna. She has wisely turned her attention to touring.Every few years, she goes on a big tour, makes a shitload of money and doesn't appear to be the least bit concerned about her record sales She was the highest paid artist of 2013.Touring is where the real money is,anyway.Janet should forget about hit records and focus exclusively on touring.

It's not always easy to find the perfect roles. She was lucky that Tyler Perry came through for her,but touring is a more reliable option for her.

"grueling"? Touring is part of her job description You can't be a recording artist/entertainer without doing shows for your fans!

This is true. Stateside, many of her biggest sellers have never even been recertified. I'd venture a guess that the janet. album ALONE has sold over 10,000,000 copies in the US. "Get up off that grey line"

Why she's not selling? Maybe because Discipline came out in 2008 and promotion stopped after "Feedback".

I think too many people underestimate Janet's international fan base. She's toured the world over. She still holds the record for the fastest sellout of the Tokyo Dome. She's toured in Australia, Europe, and Africa. Over the years there have been Russian, German and Dutch fanclubs. True, when she cancelled the European leg of the AFY tour because of 9/11 concerns it may have damaged her rep overseas, but it's not like they were never there, and it's not like all isn't forgiven (as is evident by the UK turnout of her UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL tour and the fan turnout when she appeared with Tyler Perry in London for the WHY DID I GET MARRIED 2 premiere). Hell, the Velvet Rope Tour even started in Europe, selling out all over there before it came to the States. "Get up off that grey line"

Yessir! Grueling...Janet has even said on more than one occasion. How she wants a touring schedule like when Tina Turner toured. Tina use to have her tour dates spread out for time to rest in between shows. Doing it for fans or not! Touring is still very hard on the body and is very physically exhausting. You have to be in tip top shape to go on tour. Even Prince doesn't go on long drawn out touring schedules anymore....When you reach a certain level of success & age. It becomes about being comfortable. Not killing yourself! Even Janet's brother didn't like touring... will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! Like I said, that's all part of being a recording artist/entertainer It's part of the job. When you're a veteran artist, touring is your bread and butter. There won't be any more big hit records or multi-platinum album sales.Janet won't be able to rely on those things anymore.Yes,it's grueling but there are many artists and bands who are much older than Janet and they do it (The Rolling Stones, for example).Even Cher will be touring this year. And I have heard Janet say many times that she loves performing for her fans.

EXACTLY, this is why people should not trust figures of album sales posted on Wikipedia
Wikipedia can provide a basic tenor but don't present the full accurate picture
as you say, Janet's most successful albums were never recertified
Wikipedia states Rhythm Nation sold the same amount of albums thant Control did
I don't believe that at all, Control was a major success, but that Rhythm Nation is the greatest recording by any female artist in the past 25 years, and one of the greatest records of all time
and considering the influence Janet carried during that period w/so many young ladies and even female contemporaries trying to emulate her dressing style and overall look, there's no doubt in my mind Rhythm Nation sold waaaaaaaaaaaay more copies than what Wikipedia states
and I'm w/u, at the least, the Janet album sold 10 million in the US alone, more than Dangerous did, Dangerous hit the 6 million mark during it's initial run
and considering how she's been snubbed to the yazoo by the Grammy recording academy, it doesn't surprise me her top sellers haven't been recertified by the industry
Rhythm Nation had a full 2 year run on the charts, we heard Rhythm Nation songs that were being played all the way up to right before MJ released Dangerous
that album sold way more than the 14 million figure posted on Wikipedia
in the U.S. and abroad, Janet became equal to MJ by the time that HISTORY album was released in the summer of 1995
Janet's album sales have been seriously misrepresented
I love the RAY OF LIGHT album by Madonna, that brought great memories of what I believe was her best album in TRUE BLUE back in 1987, Madonna hit a major roadblock in the beginning of the 90s when her image became way too sexually provocative and took her about 6-7 years to recover right before RAY OF LIGHT was released.....

RN 1814 was the biggest selling album of 1990. Her tour supporting the album was massive, and was the biggest concert box office draw in the US for a female in 1990. She was everywhere, and the influence and relevance of the album is still obvious today. There's no way it hasn't crossed the diamond mark here in the States. janet. was an even bigger seller, so the fact that it, too, hasn't gone diamond is slim to none. "Get up off that grey line"
