Janet Jackson's Open letter to Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Nomination Committee Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation Joel Peresman, Chairman
Dear Mr. Peresman:
We'd like to strongly encourage you to nominate Janet Jackson during the next Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction cycle. Janet has been eligible since 2007 but is still waiting for her first nomination.
Janet was virtually unstoppable in the 80's & 90's with the releases of critically acclaimed albums Control, Rhythm Nation 1814, janet. and The Velvet Rope. Janet wrote or co-wrote on all albums from Control in 1986 through 20 Y.O. in 2006, which includes all of her chart-topping hits over the decades.
Although record sales and chart success do not factor into the induction criteria equation, Janet certainly has both areas covered on her resume with over 120 million albums sold worldwide. Janet's chart success puts her in an elite status with other fellow Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees - Prince, Michael Jackson, Donna Summer, Madonna.
The ground-breaking album, "Control" (1986), ushered in a new sound and a new confidence that helped Janet emerge from her brothers' shadows. Record label executives scrambled to get a "Janet-type" artist on their roster. There were many: Pebbles, Karyn White, Paula Abdul, Jody Watley, Vanessa Williams, Nia Peeples, etc. flooded the radio airwaves. None had the longevity, talent or creative impact of Janet Jackson.
Janet has won just about every award in the music business, including 5 Grammys. MTV named Janet its inaugural MTV ICON and remains the only female artist bestowed with that honor. Janet still holds the record for the artist with the most Billboard Music Awards (33). Outside of music, Janet is also revered for her many humanitarian efforts.
Janet's first tour, 1990's Rhythm Nation World Tour, remains the biggest selling debut tour from any artist in history.
Dozens of artists cite Janet as a major career influence - far too many to mention here.
Janet has collaborated with musical heavyweights across all music genres from jazz to hip hop to opera. Examples include: Herb Alpert, Luther Vandross, Elton John, Carly Simon, Kathleen Battle, Vanessa Mae, Michael Jackson, Public Enemy's Check D, Busta Rhymes.
Janet's music career began in 1982 and she's currently in the studio recording new material. That's amazing longevity in the music business. It's time for Janet Jackson to receive an overdue nomination for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Respectfully,
Induct Janet Into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame / Facebook team

The Rock N Roll hall of Fame may be a nice award for Artists, Bands and Musicians but it’s controlled by record companies? Janet Jackson may deserve to be inducted but… after her Super Bowl stunt mishap in 2004... the committee behind the R N R may think oh please don’t include her as she embarrassed us Americans with her boob. 2006 the Sex Pistols were inducted and the surviving members refused it as they called it a piss stain. I happen to agree with them and if Janet doesn’t get inducted then she’s not missing out in anything. Good luck with the petition.

chile boo if they can hold that against janet after all the whorish things that madonna has done on purpose then fuck em all i like madonna and janet both but when it comes 2 be a low class slut madonna do it with style and they love her 4 it so let janet get the little shitty award

Do these type of petitions work? It seems like the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame folks do whatever they please.Donna Summer had to die before they finally decided to induct her.

No, please tell us how you really feel. carefull, She'll have you hunted down & thrown in prison with the guy who uploaded her song online. if all else fails there will be bunch of old white gay guys with pitchforks at your door.
When she's done with you and being a facist about protecting her billion dollar fortune and brand, She will go on tour and charge $500 plus for a concert ticket while calling for a revolution.
I digress. [Edited 2/23/14 17:56pm] “It means finding the very human narrative of a man navigating between idealism and pragmatism, faith and politics, non- violence, the pitfalls of acclaim as the perils of rejection” - Lesley Hazleton on the first Muslim, the prophet.

Janet for the Rock and Roll hall of fame, for sure. But who cares anyway. Isn't it just a bunch of journalists at Rolling Stone who are deciding who "their' favourite artists are?

If the Beastie Boys got in why the hell shouldn't Janet with or without showing off her nipple on national TV? In what way did the Beastie Boys eclipse Janet's accomplishments in the recording industry?

The thread title is misleading. This is not Janet Jackson's open letter to anybody....it's a fan petition. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

If the committee that inducts nominees is still under Jan Werner of Rolling Stone mag control, she should be on the ballot for the next batch of inductees just based off of Control and Rhythm Nation 1814. Nirvana is in based soley off of Nevermind, she has enough material worthy of inclusion based upon their criteria. Jeux Sans Frontiers

What a waste of an effort. She's not going to be nominated for this.

Who wrote this? Signs of desperation maybe. Not everyone gets nominated the first year they're eligible. It'll come in good time. This can't really have come from her or her team, especially as she's all but retired from making music right now.

120 million albums sold?
Yeah, right.

Later, hater. Her worldwide album sales are over 100,000,000. Now have a seat and shut it.
As for the R&R HOF, Jann Wenner, one of the power players on the committee, supposedly has something against Janet (which is probably the reason she's only covered RS magazine 3 times in her illustrious three decades as a superstar). It's political and a joke, because if Madonna is in there, then Janet should definitely be in there. Out of all the pop divas who came to prominence in the '80s, Janet is the only other one whose stamp is all over just about every pop star of this generation. Her career highlights, stats, influence and mark on pop culture are indellible. The fact that she hasn't even been nominated in the 7 years that she's been elligible is telling, and it's also pathetic. "Get up off that grey line"

Her album sales are not even in the neighborhood of 120 million. Maybe half that much... [Edited 2/24/14 13:59pm]

I can't speak for Jann Wenner and the type of people that vote for the HOF but it appears that they are very respectful of non-strictly-rock artists who are old and dead, like the guys in the Moonglows, not so much the ones that are still alive. Meanwhile there is a very vocal element out there that will resent any non-rock artist getting in while Black Oak Arakansas or Foreigner or whoever their totally rocking favorite band is, hasn't gotten the nod yet.
To my mind, the RRHOF's main value is as a conversation starter.
It's an interesting point though. She really does "deserve" it just as much as Madonna and yet I am not at all surprised that she is not in there while Madonna got in her first year eligible.

lets keep this a adult unbiased discussion, so to those who dont think she deserve to be in can you please explain why.and this dont have nothing to do with if you like her music or not,or if you dont think she can sing or none of the other bs non fans use to try to discredit her.based on what they claim the criteria is and the people who are already in, why should janet not be in the hall?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I asked about the Beastie Boys earlier now I'm asking if Nirvana's body of work and influence got them in why shouldn't Janet be sitting pretty in the hall?

exactly, they have rappers in there who entire careers lasted maybe 5 years, janet has charted a #1 hit in 3 different decades.so many artists cite her as an influence, she has had commercial and critical success, and billboard list her in the top 10 of all time. so lets see,she has record sales, critical acclaim,influence,longevity...there is no logical argument why she shouldnt have been in there
