Paul Simon and Sting Will Tour Together in 2014

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

The Beatles to Get CBS Grammy Special

By Philiana Ng, The Hollywood Reporter | November 14, 2013 5:15 PM EST

The Beatles arrive in America on February 7, 1964

The Beatles

The Beatles are getting a two-hour special on CBS.

"The Night That Changed America: A Grammy Salute to the Beatles," which celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Fab Four's U.S. debut performance on "The Ed Sullivan Show" in 1964, will air Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014 from 8-10 p.m. ET/PT, the network announced Thursday.

Taping the day after the Grammys on Monday, Jan. 27, the special will also highlight the legacy of the seven-time Grammy-winning group.

Though though no names were announced, CBS says that "today's top artists" will cover songs performed by the Beatles while appearing on "The Ed Sullivan Show," as well as other songs throughout the group's career. Various presenters will also highlight the impact -- musical, cultural and historical -- of the group and their TV appearance, which drew 74 million viewers.

“That night 50 years ago on the Ed Sullivan stage, the Beatles delivered a momentous performance, and America witnessed a historic television event and the beginning of a new era in music,” said Jack Sussman, CBS Entertainment executive VP of specials and events.

Added Neil Portnow, president/CEO of The Academy: "As the Grammy Awards are music’s biggest night, it's only fitting that we recognize this milestone moment in music history and pay tribute to this larger-than-life group and their enduring music and legacy.”

AEG Ehrlich Ventures will produce the special, with Ken Ehrlich as executive producer.

Outkast Reuniting at Coachella 2014: Report

Sources say the duo is ready to end their hiatus

The members of Outkast will reportedly end their hiatus next year at Coachella, according to Billboard. The magazine's sources claim the festival, which kicks off on April 11th, would be the start of several reunion appearances that would run through the year to other festivals. Billboard's sources say there have been "some converstions" between Big Boi and Andre 3000, while another says its "all systems go." Reps for Outkast did not immediately repond to Rolling Stone for comment.

See Where Outkast's 'Stankonia' Ranks on Our List of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time

The duo has largely been inactive since the 2006 release of Idlewild. Since then, Big Boi has put out two solo albums – 2010's Sir Lucious Left Foot: Th...hico Dusty and 2012's Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors – while Andre 3000 contributed to singles by other artists and recently portrayed Jimi Hendrix in the biopic All Is By My Side.

Earlier this year, Andre 3000 and Big Boi appeared together on a remix of Frank Ocean's "Pink Matter," as well as a remix of T.I.'s "Sorry." But Andre was quick to dispel any inclination that it was an Outkast reunion. " "I never want to mislead our audience – I worried that some would think these were Outkast collaborations," he said. "These songs are not Outkast collaborations. I discussed this rationale with Big, Frank and T.I. and everyone agreed. That is why I was surprised to read about these remixes." Around that same time, Big Boi tweeted with regard to Ocean's album, "Dre didn't want an Outkast Record Coming out on anybody else LP."

When Rolling Stone spoke with Andre late last year and asked him about an Outkast reunion, he skirted the issue. As for his own music, he said, "Things are kind of up in the air with me, and some days, I feel like yeah, I'll do it. Some days, I feel like, I don't. I don't know the future of music right now. I have no idea what I do. I honestly don't."

Lost Johnny Cash Album Due Out in March

'Out Among the Stars' was shelved in the early 1980s

December 10, 2013 10:15 AM ET

A long-lost Johnny Cash album will soon see the light of day, 10 years after the country legend's death. Cash's estate will be releasing Out Among the Stars, an album Cash recorded in the early 1980s that was never released and has never been heard before, The Associated Press reports.

Cash recorded Out Among the Stars between 1981 and 1984, when he was signed to Columbia Records. Columbia never used those recordings, but Cash kept hold of the tapes. His son, John Carter Cash, and the archivists at Legacy Recordings finally found those tapes last year, stashed among Johnny and June Carter Cash's vast archive of recordings and random souvenirs from their lives.

Johnny Cash had been at a low point in his career in the early Eighties when Columbia set him up to record the album with Country Music Hall of Famer Billy Sherill, a producer (and president of CBS Records Nashville) who was pushing country music in a pop direction that clashed with Cash's outlaw style.

"It was the 'Urban Cowboy' phase," John Carter Cash told the AP. "It was pop country, and dad was not that. I think him working with Billy was sort of an effort by the record company to put him more in the circle of Music Row and see what could happen at the heart of that machine."

Although Columbia never saw fit to release the recordings (and dropped Cash from the label a few years later), John Carter Cash saw something special in the 12 tracks, which include duets with June Carter Cash and Waylon Jennings. Cash's backing band on the record includes Hargus "Pig" Robbins and Marty Stuart, who was brought back in to re-record his part. "We were like, my goodness this is a beautiful record that nobody has ever heard," he said. "Johnny Cash is in the very prime of his voice for his lifetime. He's pitch perfect."

Out Among the Stars is due out on March 25th.

Freddie Mercury Biopic Casts Lead Role

'Skyfall' actor replaces Sacha Baron Cohen as Queen singer

The departure of Sacha Baron Cohen from a planned Freddie Mercury biopic left a sizable casting hole that the producers have now filled: Skyfall actor Ben Whishaw will play the Queen frontman in the upcoming movie, which Dexter Fletcher will direct, Deadline Hollywood reports.

Whishaw, an English actor, played Q in Skyfall, the latest installment of the James Bond franchise. He also appeared in Cloud Atlas and was one of six actors who depicted a version of Bob Dylan in Todd Haynes' 2007 movie I'm Not There.

Fletcher starred in Guy Ritchie's Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels before making his directorial debut with the 2012 movie Wild Bill. His most recent project is Sunshine on Leith, a musical based on the songs of the Proclaimers. Fletcher has reportedly been meeting with surviving members of Queen with an eye toward starting work on the Mercury biopic next year. The film has the rights to a number of Queen songs, including "Bohemian Rhapsody," "We Will Rock You" and "Another One Bites the Dust."

Baron Cohen first signed on in 2010 to play Mercury before dropping out of the project over the summer. Queen guitarist Brian May later explained that the band felt that the comic actor's personality was too big for the part.

"What led us to that conclusion was the last three movies that he's made – The Dictator, Les Misérables and Hugo – in which he makes outstanding performances, but they're very much Sacha Baron Cohen performances," May said. "And we thought there has to be no distraction in the Freddie movie. You have to really suspend that disbelief – the man who plays Freddie, you have to really believe is Freddie. And we didn't think that could really happen with Sacha."

Mercury died in 1991 of complications from AIDS.

Garth Brooks Will Tour Next Year

Country star promises his first road trip in over a decade

December 10, 2013 10:35 AM ET

Garth Brooks is ready to get back on the road again, he told ABC's Good Morning America. Brooks hasn't toured in more than a decade, choosing instead to raise a family with his wife Trisha Yearwood. But now that his three daughters are grown up, Brooks said, "It sure feels good to get to throw your hat back in the ring."

Brooks announced a hiatus from music in 2001 after an impressive eight-album run. He hasn't toured since, though he has played a handful of benefits and single-city runs, including a residency at the Wynn Resort in Las Vegas that began in 2009.

"Our baby's a senior in high school, and we talked about it and all my babies are fine with it, and Mrs. Yearwood is fine with it," Brooks said of his return. "So now I get to do what I love to do, which is play music, I get to be with the person I want to be with, which is Mrs. Yearwood. And my children are off on their their own, so the guilt of not being there . . . I'm a phone-call dad now." To boot, the singer became a grandpa this July when his second daughter, August Brooks, gave birth to a baby daughter, Karalynn.

There are no details yet on when Brooks' comeback tour will start, though he told Good Morning America he would be playing with a full band, unlike his one-man show in Vegas.

Brooks just released a new box set, Blame It All on My Roots: Five Decades of Influences, in which the singer traces his own musical history with covers of everyone from Hank Williams and Merle Haggard to the Eagles, Simon and Garfunkel and Otis Redding.

Beatles, Kraftwerk, Isley Brothers to Receive Lifetime Grammys

Ennio Morricone, Kris Kristofferson and photographer Jim Marshall will be honored by Recording Academy in January

December 12, 2013 7:00 AM ET

The Beatles, Kraftwerk, Kris Kristofferson and the Isley Brothers are among the artists that will honored with the Recording Academy's Lifetime Achievement Award at a special ceremony the night before the 56th Annual Grammys in January. Additionally, rock photographer Jim Marshall, the legendary Italian composer Ennio Morricone and Rick Hall, the owner of Muscle Shoals, Alabama's famed FAME Studios, will all recieve the Recording Academy's Trustees award.

Read up on the 2014 Grammys' oddest nominations

"It is a great privilege to recognize such an exceptional group of honorees and celebrate their accomplishments and contributions to the recording industry," Recording Academy President/CEO Neil Portnow said in a statement. "Their legacies are timeless and legendary, and their creativity will continue to influence and inspire future generations."

The Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award is perhaps the lone remaining music industry honor the Beatles had yet to receive. The Beatles were nominated for 25 awards between a Record of the Year nod in 1964 for "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and a a 1997 win for The Beatles Anthology in the Best Music Video Long Form category. The Fab Four won eight Grammys, most notably Best New Artist in 1965 and the 1968 Album of the Year for Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. That winning tradition continues into 2014 as Paul McCartney was nominated for three awards at the 56th Grammy Awards.

Krautrock pioneers Kraftwerk will also receive the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Starting with their debut in 1971, the unique sound created by founding member Ralf Hutter and his army of collaborators has been credited with influencing everyone from David Bowie to Daft Punk. The Recording Academy also recognizes the group's boundary-pushing use of music technology. Kraftwerk's honor comes just a month and a half before the group is scheduled to perform each of their albums over the course of a eight-concert residency at Los Angeles' Walt Disney Concert Hall.

While perhaps best remembered for his countless acting roles, Kristofferson was one of his era's premier country music songwriters, penning Janis Joplin's "Me and Bobby McGee" in addition to his own solo work. The Isley Brothers, who have been active in the music industry for almost 60 years, are recognized as one of pop music's longest-running acts; brothers Ron and Ernie Isley continue to tour together. The "Shout!" group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992. Also receiving Lifetime Achievement Awards are violinist Maud Powell, "King of Zydeco" Clifton Chenier, and Mexican singer Armando Manzanero.

Jim Marshall, whose photos of the Beatles and Woodstock remain some of music's most iconic images, is the first photographer ever to receive the Trustees award. Marshall passed away in 2010.

Ennio Morricone, the prolific and still-active composer with hundreds of scores in his catalog, is best known for his spaghetti western works on The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly and Once Upon a Time in the West.

Rick Hall and his FAME Studios helped form the distinctive Muscle Shoals sound in the small Alabama town that drew Bob Dylan and the Allman Brothers.

Finally, Emile Berliner, the inventor of the gramophone, will posthumously receive the Technical Grammy Award.

The Beatles Ready Box Set of All 13 U.S. Albums

By Chris Payne, New York | December 12, 2013 11:45 AM EST

The Beatles Ready Box Set of All 13 U.S. Albums
The Beatles Press Site (Apple Corps)

The re-issues drop Jan. 21, leading up to the 50th anniversary of the Beatles' first trip to America

With the 50th anniversary of "Beatlemania" arriving early next year, Capitol Records will re-release all of 13 the Beatles' American releases in a set titled "The U.S. Albums."

The set drops Jan. 21 in North America and features reissues of the band's 13 American albums -- albums that often held different track lists, song mixes, titles, and art than their U.K. counterparts. Five of them (listed below) have never been available on CD before. Pre-orders are available here.

The collection begins with 1964's "Meet the Beatles!" and concludes with 1970's "Hey Jude," though all albums except from the latter fall between the years 1964 and 1966, when the band most often released differing albums in the U.S. and Britain.

The 13 CDs come with carefully-replicated album art (including the albums' inner sleeves), along with a 64-page booklet with photos and original LP artwork. All titles come in mono and stereo, except "The Beatles’ Story" and "Hey Jude," which are stereo only.

For a limited time, the CDs (with the exception of the audio commentary album "The Beatles' Story") all titles will be available individually as well.

Weeks after the Jan. 21 release of the box set, the music world will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Beatles' arrival in America on Feb. 7, 1964, when the quartet famously touched down in New York's John F. Kennedy Airport. Two nights later, they made their legendary 5-song performance on the "Ed Sullivan Show," and on Feb. 11, they played their first U.S. concert at Washington, DC's Washington Coliseum.

A two-hour special titled “The Night That Changed America: A Grammy Salute To The Beatles,” will air on CBS on Feb. 9 at 8 PM (ET), marking the exact 50-year anniversary of the "Sullivan" performance.

Here's a full list of the 13 albums included:

Meet The Beatles! (1964)
The Beatles’ Second Album (1964)
A Hard Day’s Night (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) (1964) *
Something New (1964)

Beyonce

Beyoncé drops unannounced self-titled album on iTunes

By Tony Maglio
TheWrap

Beyoncé released a self-titled "visual" album exclusively on iTunes Thursday night, to the surprise of essentially everyone not named "Carter."

The studio album, Beyoncé's fifth, contains a combination of traditional audio tracks with accompanying video versions. Fans can now buy the virtually unannounced 32 "track" offering -- 14 songs and 17 videos -- for $15.99, or wait a week to purchase songs individually. Manufacturing of physical albums begins today, and the double disc CD/DVD will be available at retail in time for the holidays.

"I didn't want to release my music the way I've done it," Beyoncé said in a press release, explaining the total lack of promotion or even awareness. "I am bored with that. I feel like I am able to speak directly to my fans. There's so much that gets between the music, the artist and the fans. I felt like I didn't want anybody to give the message when my record is coming out. I just want this to come out when it's ready and from me to my fans."

The pop star's latest album contains collaborations with Jay Z, Drake, Justin Timberlake, Frank Ocean, Pharrell Williams, Timbaland, Michelle Williams, Kelly Rowland and more. Daughter Blue Ivy is even involved on "Beyoncé," featured in the aptly titled song and video, "Blue."

The videos -- some which were directed by the singer -- were shot primarily during her "Mrs. Carter Show World Tour." Those were shrouded in secrecy as well, though they were filmed in open places. The clips offer much international flavor, set against the backdrops of New York City, Paris, Sydney and Rio de Janeiro.

Beyoncé recorded the new album all across the world over the course of a year-and-a-half, the release said, but the initial recording began in The Hamptons, New York, where the entire writing and producing team gathered in the summer of 2012 to live and work together. That group did an exceptional job of maintaining the project's secrecy, clearly.

Amazingly, Beyoncé's elaborate plan to avoid leaks actually worked -- an incredible rarity in the current music climate, especially given her stature. The main problem plaguing music business sales is its leaks, which tends to happen in the same way most of the time: a physical album being prepared for its debut-week shipment is ripped along the line and uploaded to the web, where its content files are illegally shared. That's not going to happen this time, the pop star's team assured.

Earlier this week, Columbia Records Chairman Rob Stringer strongly -- yet carefully -- hinted that Beyoncé's new record would drop next year, while discussing the label's 2014 lineup. His exact words "at some point" make more sense given the current context. Stringer (now correctly) predicted that whenever it did come out, it would be "monumental." Well played, sir.

The new album promises a "provocative, unguarded artistic statement -- revealing a side of the icon previously unknown to fans and cementing her status as a pop visionary," the iTunes Editors' Notes tout.

On the decision to make a visual album, Beyoncé noted the following: "I see music. It's more than just what I hear. When I'm connected to something, I immediately see a visual or a series of images that are tied to a feeling or an emotion, a memory from my childhood, thoughts about life, my dreams or my fantasies. And they're all connected to the music."

Shortly following its rollout on iTunes, Beyoncé's website was updated, taking browsers through quick cuts promoting her surprise offering.

The announcement was first made on Facebook.

Givenchy Campaign Champions Diversity, Names Badu as New Face
December 13, 2013
Link

Givenchy has tapped none other than neo-soul singer Erykah Badu to be the latest face of the label's Mert & Marcus-shot Spring 2014 campaign.

Designer Ricardo Tisci has said to have been a fan of Badu's for a long time, though had never worked with her before. In an interview with Style.com, he admitted having her image in the back of his mind while designing the French label's most recent collection.

"Erykah, she's an icon-come on!" Tisci told the online publication. "She's one of the most stylish women I've met in my life. She's got such a good sense of proportion, of colors. What I want to do with my advertising campaign is spread the love. Already now it's been three seasons that I've been using people that express something, they are great artists, or beautiful women, or stylish women, or models that I really believe in. It's kind of a family portfolio."

Badu's gig comes off the heels of the industry's much buzzed about controversy surrounding brands not including women of color in their campaigns.

Heated debate stirred up within the fashion community after Bethanny Hardison and former model Iman expressed their concerns about discrimination on the runways and called out certain casting directors and fashion houses for being prejudice in an issue of The New York Times.

Tisci however has always seemed to embrace diversity with his models, notoriously hiring girls of color such as Joan Smalls and Maria Borges according to The Huffington Post. He is hoping that his latest campaign with Badu will continue to encourage other leading brands in the industry to diversify their campaigns.

"I've always been supporting them. For me, I grew up in a family and I grew up in a culture, an education, that we are all the same," he said. "It's 2013. Everybody's being so cool about Instagram, about Facebook, any media. Everybody's being so open. At the end of the day, why are not so many black girls or Latin girls in shows? When you have an American president who is black! When I see this happening, it's quite sad, I think. People can be so avant-garde, so advanced, but actually not, because people are still making differences between skin color."

Tisci made the announcement with a photo on the brand's official Instrgram account.

Aretha Franklin Recording Album of Classics From Fellow Iconic Female Singers

Franklin is working on a "concept" album with Babyface, Don Was and Clive Davis. "They're records that, musically, I respected and that I liked a lot and that I would love to have one go-'round with"

The Queen of Soul plans to give the royal treatment to some songs made famous by other iconic female singers for her next album.

Aretha Franklin tells Billboard that she plans to hit the studio on Jan. 1 near her home town of Detroit to lay vocals atop of tracks currently being made by producers Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds and Don Was, with Clive Davis serving as executive producer.

Related Articles

"It's a concept CD," says Franklin, noting that the 10 tracks she and Davis selected from an "ultimate list" include Barbra Streisand's "People" and Donna Summer's "Last Dance."

"I'm even thinking of (Destiny's Child's) 'Bootylicious'," Franklin adds with a laugh.

"It's just re-working some things that were very, very good and certainly chartworthy and sold a lot of records," says Franklin, who hopes to have the album out during the second quarter of 2014 on RCA Records. "They're records that, musically, I respected and that I liked a lot and that I would love to have one go-'round with. I aspire for musical excellence. I have very high standards where music is concerned, and I'm looking for something I haven't done, something that you haven't heard and something just absolutely smashing."

Franklin says she's been leaving Babyface and Was to their own devices while recording the instrumental tracks.

"We haven't had a lot of discussion," she notes. "I'm pretty much leaving it up to their expertise in that area. We all have a great deal of respect for each other. They're not anybody that I would question. They've got great track records and I believe they're going to bring it home, and I'll do the rest. So I'm waiting with baited breath to hear what they're doing."

Franklin is also intrigued by the prospect of working for the first time with Detroit homeboy Was.

"I just met him and learned about the things that he's been doing with Bonnie Raitt and the Rolling Stones and all the people that he's been working with," Franklin says. "Each person that I spoke with about him had nothing but good things to say about him and a lot of praise and admiration. I know for certain Mr. Davis would not have asked him if he couldn't do the job."

Franklin had to cancel a number of shows earlier this year due to an unspecified medical condition, but she says she's "feeling well and ready to go." She performs Dec. 21 in Detroit and is booked for shows on Jan. 17-18 at Radio City Music Hall in New York, with plans to perform during March in Atlantic City, with Toronto also in the spring and make-up dates for canceled shows in Montreal and Ottawa. She's also pursuing a distribution deal for her Aretha's Records label, which will be putting out albums by her son Kecalf, a Christian rapper, and grandson Jordan, a pop singer.

Once the ball drops in Times Square, Billy Joel will be the first singer to welcome in 2014 on "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest."

The ABC telecast will cross the East River to Joel’s concert at Brooklyn’s Barclay Center at five minutes past midnight for a live broadcast from his New Year’s Eve show.

“This should be one of our more memorable new year’s eves,” says “New Year's Rockin' Eve” executive producer Barry Adelman. “With Miley Cyrus at 11:40 pm and Billy Joel at 12:05 am it should be a great great night.”

Blondie, Miley Cyrus, Mac...NYE Lineup

The 5-1/2 hours of music programming on Dec. 31 begins at 8 p.m. with the two-hour “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve Presents the 30 Greatest Women in Music,” continues with the live broadcast from New York City from 10 to 11 p.m. before a half-hour break. Performances continue from 11:30 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Blondie, Icona Pop, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Cyrus will perform in New York; Capital Cities, Daughtry, Jason Derulo, Fall Out Boy, Florida Georgia Line, Ariana Grande, Jennifer Hudson, Enrique Iglesias, Robin Thicke and the Fray perform in Los Angeles. Ryan Seacrest and Jenny McCarthy will be the hosts in Times Square; Fergie is emcee of the L.A. portion.

“We like ‘New Year’s Rockin’ Eve’ to be a review of the year in music,” Adelman says of the bookings. “It’s people who made a great impact on the charts. Icona Pop was so big throughout the year, Macklemore dominated the charts all year long and Robin Thicke has the (No. 2) song of the year on the Billboard (Hot 100). We always give artists a chance to do new material as well.”

Dick Clark Leaves a Rocki...preciation

Last year’s edition of the 11:30 p.m.-1 a.m. show posted its highest ratings in 11 years. “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve Part 1” was watched by 22.2 million total viewers, 9.7 million of which are in the 18-49 demographic. It was ABC’s second most watched non-sports telecast behind only the Academy Awards. “Part 2” had an average audience of 6.4 million total viewers.

“We have become an American tradition,” Adelman says of a show that began in 1972 aboard the Queen Mary on Long Beach, Calif., with Three Dog Night as the talent. “So many people have grown up with the show.”

Numerous digital activations will occur during the show via Twitter and on abc.com that are designed to “complement and enhance” the show. “Anybody who wants to join the conversation will have plenty of opportunity,” he says. “It’s something we encourage.”

Simon Cowell Calls Gaga A 'Boring Singer,' Disses Beyonce & Katy Perry

Simon Cowell Calls Gaga A 'Boring Singer,' Disses Beyonce & Katy Perry

Simon Cowell may have blacklisted a few top names from performing on his newly launched stateside "X Factor." The blatant brute recently spoke to the UK's The Daily Mirror about several chart-topping females' voices, as well as his former co-worker Ryan Seacrest.

"If you only ever heard Lady Gaga, she's the most boring singer in the world," Cowell said of the pop star, who has performed both on "American Idol" and the UK version of "X Factor" while Simon was on the judging panel.

"You've got to see her [Gaga] -- you need TV. Same with Beyoncé. Or Katy Perry. We're all about image. You have to have that X factor," he continued. Beyoncé had appeared on the finale of the 2008 season of "X Factor" to duet with finalist Alexandra Burke, while Perry sat next to Cowell as a guest judge during season nine "Idol" national auditions.

Cowell continued to push his new musical venture -- which will give the winner a recording contract and five million dollars -- by dissing the host of his former show, "Idol's" Ryan Seacrest, while upping "X Factor" host Steve Jones. "He's tall, dark, British -- he's basically completely the opposite of Ryan Seacrest. You've got to add in intelligent as well."

Diomedes Diaz, Colombian Vallenato Star, Dead at 56

Diomedes Diaz, Colombian Vallenato Star, Dead at 56

Diomedes Diaz, one of Colombia’s most popular vallenato stars and a man whose lifestyle was as discussed as his music, died suddenly of a heart attack in a clinic in the northern city of Valledupar on Dec. 22, just days after the release of his 30th album. He was 56 years old.

A colorful character whose goodluck charm was a diamond tooth, Díaz was born to poor farmers and rose from singing in the fields to becoming one of Colombia’s most recognizable—and lucrative—voices. Long signed to Sony Music Colombia, the singer is reportedly Colombia’s top-selling musical act, selling over 19 million albums in his native country during his nearly 40-year recording career. At the time of his death, he had released his latest album on Dec. 19, in time for Colombia’s holiday party season.

If vallenato—Colombia’s traditional accordion-based music from the Atlantic Coast—is the music of the people—few singers better symbolized it than Díaz, who survived drugs, alcohol, open heart surgery, a bad automobile accident and, most famously, three years in prison after a young female fan was found dead after spending the night in his apartment.

Known as El Cacique de La Junta (The Chief of La Junta, referring to his birth town of La Junta), Díaz longed to be known as a composer more than a singer. His first job was as a bike messenger for radio station Guatapurí in the state of Guajira, the hotbed of vallenato. The job enabled him to meet the genre’s biggest stars and top accordionists and in 1976, Rafael Santos and Emilio Oviedo recorded his song “Cariñito de mi Vida.”

Díaz would go on to win third place in the Best new song category of the fabled Vallenato Legend Festival, the annual gathering of the top musicians in the genre, leading to his debut solo album in 1977, Herencia Vallenata.

Working with a series of top accordion players (all vallenato singers work in tandem with an accordionist), Díaz steadily rose to become one of the leading names in the genre, and by the 1980s, had become the top-selling artist in the country, releasing an album every May 26, his birthday.

The bigger Díaz became, the bigger the controversy surrounding him. Fond of drugs and alcohol, he frequently canceled concerts and was sued multiple times by angry promoters. Tragedy also surrounded him, and in 1994, his longtime accordionist, Juancho Rois, died after the small plane where Díaz was also scheduled to be flying, crashed.

Unabated, Díaz kept churning out albums and hits. By 1996, when he celebrated his 20th anniversary, he had recorded over 400 songs.

But just days before the 1997 release of his anniversary album—“Muchas Gracias”—tragedy struck. A 22-year-old fan, Doris Adriana Niño, was invited to Díaz’s apartment. Days later her body was found abandoned in the countryside. After a lengthy process and investigation, Diaz was subsequently tried for murder and sentenced to 12 years in prison of which he spent nearly four years behind bars.

Upon his release, Diaz resumed his career, once again releasing yearly albums and winning a Latin Grammy for Best Vallenato album in 2010

At the time of his death, he had just released his newest album, and had come home to rest after a show in Barranquilla December 20. His wife found him dead the following morning.

Díaz had 28 children born from different women. eek

Bandcamp Turns 5, Reports $50 Million To Artists

December 2013
Link

Bandcamp turns 5-years-old this month; and with it comes some rarer stats from the music sales and marketing platform.

Bandcamp is reporting that they've paid out $50 million since launch, a number they say is on track to reach $100 million in the next 18 months because of a recently launched mobile app and some of the other things ''they've got cooking."

"Even five years in, it still feels like we’ve just scratched the surface of the enormous opportunity in front of us," the Bandcamp team wrote in a blog post. "That opportunity - to positively impact the lives of millions of artists and their fans - is something we’re incredibly grateful for, and we’re more excited than ever about the work we have planned. Once again, thank you for being a part of it all!"
