Jill Scott denies punching Anita Baker

News to me. Jill talks is asked if she ever swung on Anita and Jill says no, that she and Anita had a disagreement. Um, Jill seems real restrained when she talks about old girl, but she does say she had to bow out. Anita is no joke.

Starts at 3:47.

Something about Jill, tho. She's no angel, either. I would never want to go up against her. I think the only thing that saved Anita is cause she is older than Jill.

I'm gonna keep my mouth shut about Jill (okay not quite yet but after this). I know about how weird Anita Baker can be sometimes but... I don't trust neither side of the story. Wasn't it like two years ago? Anita's over it but suddenly Jill had to say it? The classier thing she could've done was keep her mouth shut and keep folks guessing. Now she's gonna make Anita fans think she's lying.

Well, ikn Jill's defense, she was asked, but like you said, Timmy, she could have declined to answer. What was their conflict about? I don't trust either side, either. Anita is Anita, she comes from that old school, but I wouldn't turn my back on Jill-she has she coldish eyes and she would cut you quick. Come to think, I have never heard anything good about Jill other than her talent. Not that I have heard all bad, mind you, but just nothing good.

Scriptgirl I think the last time Anita & Jill crossed paths backstage was at that VH1 tribute to Soul music about 2yrs ago..Anita was already on fire because she wasn't able to perform based on some Crap from the Producers or whoever was over Entertainment. I think Anita bowed out of her performance moreso than the Producers asking her not to perform. Some things went down back stage.

Really-it sounded like it was a sitch where they were in a recording studio. Why would Anita be mad at Jill if it was a producer thing?

They asked Jill, she didn't bring it up. She COULD'VE said a whole lot more. I was completely unaware of this incident prior to this thread, so for me, without any previous knowledge about a beef or speculation about what actually transpired, or who's capable of what (we're all capable of being "less than" our best selves at any given moment) I still think her response was deflective and respectful

Yeah she's talking about the VH1 Divas Tribute. According to Anita, she disagreed with the show's producers and Jill's manager about how to sing "Sweet Love." They planned for it to be a duet with Jill and only wanted Anita to sing a small part which she didn't agree with, so she left. It was also rumored that Jill was giving an attitude to the show's staff and producers. The only reports of punching came from the folks in the streets. It's over and done with.

Yep! I've talked to people from Detroit who know her or have met her and, let's just say, Anita makes Diana Ross look like Mother Theresa. lol She showed up at my place of employement a few years ago (2 hours late with no excuses or apologies) and she acted as if she were the President of the United States! Boy, were they relieved when she finally exited the building!lol

We don't know the whole VH1 tribute to Soul Music story but we do know the Ladies had to know the Game-plan at least a week before the show and they had to rehearse a day or two before the LIVE taping. Everything is subject to change @ the last minute. It appears VH1 planned a Tribute segment for Anita with Ledisi & Jill singing her music and Anita joining Jill at the end. In my opinion VH1 had good intentions but if I was the Producer that night I would have asked Ledisi to sing Anita's song first then I would have asked Ms. Baker to take the stage and sing her song SOLO then move on to the next segment. The Producer let Anita walk and I think he should have taken a stronger control over the situation.

Anita had a big falling out with the late great Luther Vandross also. Their tour together ended very UGLY!

Yep! I think everyone remembers that fiasco. I can't remember what the story was but Luther said in an interview with Sister 2 Sister magazine (I believe) that he and Anita were supposed to duet on "I Who Have Nothing" for one of his early 90's albums. Something happened, she had one of her Diva moments and she refused to record with him. They ended up calling Martha Wash to take her place. Luther and Anita did not like each other at all. But, Luther was the very epitome of the Male Diva himself so I can see why they ended up butting heads.

If that was true! Prince still wouldn't be a successful artist in the muziq business for over 30 years! Karma wouldn't have let him....

Anita was supposed to open for Luther the night I went, at Madison Square Garden in '88 or '89 I think. She didn't perform because of an 'illness', so Sinbad wound up being the opening act.

Anita had it up to her Diamond Earrings with Luther's mess on the road. After she finished her Set and it was time for Luther to do his thing he would tell the audience "Please give it up again to my opening Act Ms. Anita Baker!"....LOL....That is DIRTY and so wrong.....Angie Stone and Gerald Levert ALSO did tour dates with Luther. Angie did a radio-interview and she said Luther had RULES on the road. When they were done OPENING for the King they had to be GONE from the building or locked in their dressing room out of sight. Gerald said the same thing about Luther. Luther was something else...

He should have been! He paid his dues! The majority of opening acts go through that. Its the price they have to pay to become a headliner. To get respect you have to demand it or else. Prince rarely has opening acts. But "The Time" back in the day suffered the consequences to open for him. lol

I always wondered why Luther didn't like to look at his opening acts? When En Vogue use to open for him. He had curtains put up backstage so he would n't have to look at them. Lol that use to crack me up.....

I will never forgive Luther for that tour. I was living down south at the time(around late 93 or early 94 and bought tickets. I love Luther, but I really wanted to see En Vogue. He fired them two cities before he got to me because after they performed half the audience would leave(thoroughly entertained) and the rest wouldn't respond to him as heartily as he wanted because they were sated. Talk about a fucking drama queen. Writing about it now gets me pissed. mad

No headliner wants to be upstaged by their opening act..Can you blame him? Plus you shouldn't talk negative about the deceased. Its bad karma...

I don't know why Luther even bothered to have opening acts at his concerts lol he never liked any of the artists who agreed to do it.My sister knew someone who worked for him,and she was able to hangout backstage at one of his shows. This was in the mid or late 90s,and the opening act was Boys II Men.He was cussing them out, because they showed up late to the venue. My sister said he was vicious!! lol
