It's kind of what makes me have what respect for Madonna I do have. She seemed to learn early on that nothing was more powerful than the backing a big record company could give her because it sure wasn't money. It gave her the press, and therefore the publicity, she needed to get the real money from other sources (endorsements, tours and films) Plus she never seemed like the materialistic type. That helps. Kandi will tell you how unmaterialistic she is as long as you're willing to listen to her say it.

I think she meant the fact that they were not getting anything back then. Im pretty sure they get paid well for their story on the movie, live performances, money made from the albums, video syndication etc.

The deal isn't always about money. How was I ever going to hear about Xscape living in rural Alberta Canada?

But there I was, a fan since their first album. A great "deal" as far as marketing, awareness, and distribution (ie. buying their cassingle wherever I pleased). Don't forget top notch production and recording 20 years ago.
