Not necessarily. What if one only prefers Pop music? Pop music includes artists of various nationalities. So, I wouldn't say just because you prefer or listen to one form of music, chances are you're racist. There are lot of young black men who listen to nothing but Hip-Hop but they date & marry outside of their race.

I'd say that's ridiculous because music is universal. However, if you prefer a certain genre but wouldn't listen to a good song in that genre - solely - because of the skin color of the artist, then yeah, chances are you're a racist.

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

If you think a gerne of music is related to skincolor, you´re probably a racist.

You seriously want to tell me racism has nothing to do with skincolor? Serioulsy?

Some people are not fully exposed to other genres of music, or simply have no interest/emotional attachment to.

My best friend can't find enjoyment in any genre aside from Arabic music. I've tried to expose him to different artists, but they don't hold his interests.

Also, you have make into consideration that many people are just casual listeners. That could play into the "one genre" factor too IMO.

sadly the starting point of this thread itself is rather racist. or at best totally ignorant

now tell me which of the numerous genres out there can be credited to one race only? do tell...
the vast majority of genres are a mixture and blend together influences from many musicians from many races. are there genres that represent some races more than others, artist and audience wise? sure there are, but it's never a clear cut. NEVER. now to suggest otherwise IS the racist part. I thought we were over that "race music" tag somehwhere after the 50s oh well....

so tell me, my uncle listens to Jazz only, is he racist? racists towards whites? towards blacks? hispanics? Asians? Wookies? do tell.... smile

Vanglorious... this is protected by the red, the black, and the green. With a key... sissy!

I'm guessing the point (which I don't think I agree with) is that if you are restricted to one type of music, and feel threatened or uncomfortable going outside of that--then you probably feel threatened or uncomfortable going outside of racial or ethnic boundaries as well. Not that certain genres are associated with certain skin colors, but that people who are scared of music that's "not my clearly defined thing" are scared of people that are "not my clearly defined thing."

I'm not sure that's exactly the same as being racist--maybe more xenophobic.

That said, let's not pretend that there isn't a general association of skin colors and musical genres. Otherwise Sarah Silverman couldn't make her presentation joke at the AMA's about the Robin Thicke, Justin Timberlake, and Rihanna, or Prince couldn't sing "I'm the wrong color and I play guitar" (and at least some of the comments about Thicke and Timberlake on the org seem to be because of their race--they're bonafides seem more questionable because they're white). Such a view is reductive and not (obviously) true--but there are people for whom those general associations become not just descriptive, but proscriptive, and they are unwilling or at least very hesitant to really give music they associate with other ethnic or racial groups a fair shake, just because they assume that it's unable to speak to them.

AND FINALLY--SO NO ONE MISUNDERSTANDS--I AM NOT PROMOTING THE IDEA THAT RACE AND MUSICAL GENRE SHOULD OR DO GO TOGETHER!!
