Ginuwine- Tell Me Do U Wanna I dig the ''atmospheric'' r&b sound lately. And Ginuwine really had it on his first album! the production is FIRE Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

Umm, hey you guys, 1st time user here... As you can tell from my user name, Ginuwine is one out of 2 favourite 90s/2000s R&B singers of mine . I really dig 'Tell Me Do U Wanna', even though I'm partial to the more up-tempo tracks off Bachelor, I like how Tim is keeping it modest, keeping it minimal on this particular beat, but you can hear the same 'ey-ey-ey' effect that appears on the 'When Doves Cry' cover, that's a nice piece of album consistency.
I really liked Bachelor, I thought it was a game-changer, and there were a lot of people who seemed to end up taking notes from it, though not in a negatively derivative way.
Anyone know if 'Tell Me Do U Wanna' still gets played on R&B stations? I heard it ONCE on the radio in my entire life, and that was on a local station 2 years ago (Ginuwine gets a lot of love from the Caribbean community in the city where I used to live) and they didn't bother to cut off the interlude that leads into Holler at the end of the track, which was quite a funny effect. I don't want your rhythm without your rhyme

I hear "Pony", "Differences" and "Last Chance" from time to time. I think it was mentioned here concerning he and Timbaland's falling out that Ginuwine got into a little trouble with drugs. Then Tim saw greener pastures with Justin (no Best Album nomination) Timberlake and Ginuwine saw green from envy. He felt he'd be in Timberlakes position right now had things went differently, and I can see it. But don't quote me on any of this.

Prince must of REALLY had good vibes from Elgin! He was one of very few men that Prince has cleared to cover one of his biggest "MasterPieces"!...Ginuwine's tragic life is what put a halt to his aspiring career. Also his public falling out with Timbaland! Who he always felt gave his best songs to Justin Timberlake. Ginuwine was also very upset that Tim passed on appearing in the video for one of the last songs he produced for him called "Get Involved". They payed Tim $50,000 to appear in it & a producers fee! He bailed out on him & threw him under the bus. Ginuwine feels to this day that Justin's muziq career should have been his & that he stole from him..
My favorite from The Bachelor' is "I'll Do Anything.I'm Sorry" The Stevie Wonder sample is used to perfection on it. I still play it to this day. Ginuwine to me based his early look on Prince's Parade/Under The Cherry Moon look...

Yeah, agreed. Seems that Ginuwine always did prefer to hand over the control over the direction of his albums to the producers, though. Kells, and Usher after 8701, have been all about taking full rein over their projects, I guess Ginuwine's primarily concerned with performing.
Glad he seems to have settled down some after going through harder times in the early 2000s, with him and Solé setting up that charity for disabled adults.
What's the ORGers general consensus on his version of 'When Doves Cry', though? I was afraid that that was gonna be a touchy subject. I always liked it! >ducks and covers<
There's some cool use of sampling on the Bachelor album throughout, I think it climaxes on 'G Thang' w/ Missy, where they mix Portishead, D'Angelo, and then interpolate Strafe's 'Set It Off'. That was crazy. Swing Mob at their finest. I don't want your rhythm without your rhyme

His tragic life and him not taking control over his career like he should have, I think are the main reasons why he didn't become as popular as Usher. Ginuwine is heavily influenced by Michael Jackson - his vocals and dancing (he has said so himself , he's a huge fan) but I think image wise he def was inspired by Prince. I def think that had Timbo given certain tracks to Ginuwine, he proabably would been a bit more known in the mid 00s, not more known than Timberlake but he would have had some hits on the charts. Those epic songs that Justin Timberlake is doing now.... Ginuwine's debut album (100% produced by Timbaland) had those, and many interludes to make the album flow.

The org generally doesn't favor Ginuwine's cover. But I really like it!

I loved him so much when this album dropped, and several other singles following the next few years. I cared for him more than Usher in the late 90's. I used to have it, it was like the male answer to One In A Million. Wish I still had it, would have appreciated it so much more today

I'm not sure that 20/20 Experience is what a new collaboration with Timbaland would have sounded like, though. Tim tends to custom-fit his beats to the artist he is working with. Just listen to what he did for Nelly Furtado on 'Loose'. It's a different sound from either his Ginuwine albums, his work with Aaliyah, or his tracks with Justin. Everything on 20/20 is attuned to Justin's vocal style. Ginuwine has a different cadence, timbre, prosody, use of ad libs. There are tracks on 20/20 that I think would not have worked for Ginuwine. But Ginuwine and Timbaland worked magic together, though, and I think it's a shame that they don't appear to see eye to eye anymore. Check out the Pony remix:
