She could have released one for Christmas, as her last album was out before Christmas 2012. |

I'll bet that this "award" was bought by her people. Generally when they "create" an award like this, it's a PR thing that was bought by the winning artist's camp to bolster sales. Taylor Swift's done it, plenty of folks have. And I'd be surprised if this was a legit created award. |

It is kind of a vague honor for a recording artist. |

Love her or hate her (I'm the latter save for a few songs) she's got more number one hits than Whitney Houston, Janet, or Elton John and is tied with Madonna and is one away from tying with Michael Jackson. Those artists have been around for decades and Rihanna hasn't been around for a decade.
This is why i don't understand why people are mad. or arguing in this thread like lastdecember said this isn't the songwriters hall of fame...
She is singles wise what i imagine Madonna or Michael was to my parents generation. NO her music is not as good I NEVER SAID THAT. But in terms of having constant hits... no other artists in the past 10 years has had as much as her.
In fact, i don't there has been more than a few months. Where she is not in the top 10... since like 2007 or so.
Just last year she had You Da One, Where Have You Been, Birthday Cake etc. And she also had Princess Of China with Coldplay, Take Care with Drake, That shit song with Nicki Minaj, and that was just the first part of the year. Second part of the year had Diamonds...
This year it was Stay, Fashion Killa, Bad(Remix), Pour It Up, and now Monster.
Her producers are milking this chick for all they got
You'd have constant hits too, if you did like her and release an album every year since you debuted. While Madge and Michael had hits, they took breaks between albums. This made them look less manufactured and made the impact of what they released much greater.... "Love is like peeing in your pants, everyone sees it but only you feel its warmth" |

yall do realize that something doesnt have to be good to be iconic right?like it or not she has become a icon in today's pop culture, from her hit singles to her fashion style to her beatdown by chris.there are alot of disgusting people who are cultural icons (not saying rhianna is a disgusting person),im just pointing out that just because you may not think she's very talented dont mean she's not a iconic figure. |

from a music standpoint. i don't see how she's different than Madonna. both vocally mediocre, puppets of producers, (not to mention robotic dancers with great visual styling who dated "bad boys" in their youth) STAY CALM M-stans, and re-read what i said, nothin in there about her touring, her staging or theatrics and yeah Madge has "iconic" songs, but to this generation RiRi arguably has hers.
I guess its how do you like your talentless hacks, hip-hop-ish, with exotic accents, gay, art-pop-ish, etc. But again, consistent with this generations lowering of the bar |

I have a feeling they'd be pretty similar. With 20 top-10 Hot 100 hits already (not even counting smashes like "Live Your Life" or "Love the Way You Lie"), something has to get left off like "Angel," "Who's That Girl," and "Causing a Commotion." Maybe they'll go straight for a #1's compilation while they can still fit them on one disc?

Rihanna is evidence that they music industry can literally make anyone a star. Having "star quality" means nothing anymore because so few of the so-called stars have that nowadays. She certainly doesn't. Any halfway cute chick with a sassy haircut can be Rihanna if she s***s the right d*** or eats the right p**** in the industry. Once that initial investment is made, the artist can say and do whatever to generate media attention. When the decision has been made, all songs, imaging, media and awards will be provided for them for as long as they need because...and here is the MOST IMPORTANT PART...AN INVESTMENT BY A CORPORATION HAS BEEN MADE AND THEY WILL DO WHATEVER TO SEE A RETURN. If she were to crash and burn, they would drop her but the machine is working for her, Katy Perry and a few others. Talent is at the bottom of the list these days.

This idiot has had 7 albums and has only sold 10 million. Can you imagine? There is nothing iconic about Rihanna and she isn't really good at anything. She simply exists to be the face of a song submitted to Def Jam. All she is is a product of her record company. Like a Black Britney with a much much lower budget. From a commercial standpoint, I can name a dozen other acts who've emerged in the past 10-15 yrs who deserve this more. |

The only way she is comparable to Madonna is that people who can't sing can sing along with her songs or do them in karaoke and make it almost passsable. |

Beyoncé has been around since 1997. Rihanna has not. They are not the same. Beyoncé can actually sing. Rihanna can carry a tune. Despite the talent differences, about the only things they have in common is they are both pop stars, they are both black and they both f***ed Jay-Z. |

All have been more successful than Rihanna and are more deserving to be hailed as iconic than silly ass Rihanna. To give her that kind of a citation is a joke. She's no "icon." They may as well give it to Dora the Explorer next.

I kinda feel sorry that the AMAs are fan voted, now, VMAs, AMAs, EMAs, People Choice, everything is fan voted, which will make TALENTED artists' chance to win diminish little by little.. GRAMMYs is the only award that is based on experts' opinion (yet you always see that the AOTY award goes for the best selling album of the year/ROTY goes for the song that everybody knows)... I just don't wanna wake up someday and find out that THE GRAMMYs became fan voted. |

The Grammy awards at least has some suprises though.
like when my boys Arcade Fire won album of the year... with no top 40 hits or anything. Or the years Robert Plant & Alison Kraus won for album of the year.
Probably the strangest... Herbie Hancock winning for a cover album of Joni Mitchel Songs. That was the year Yeezy was poised to win for Graduation... he was in for a shock
AMA and the rest are predictable though Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

You lost me at J-Lo and then you really lost me at Taylor Swift! I'm actually impressed you managed to list two singers who I think are much worse than Rihanna.
As far as success goes, it's hard to argue with Rihanna's numbers. If you take out Usher's 9 chart-toppers, she has more Hot 100 #1's (12) than any two of those artists combined. That's amazing.

Both JLo and Taylor have been more successful than she has. JLo is a much more rounded entertainer; she can act, dance, perform, has more overall charisma and has had more impact, and even if her voice is as flat as a pancake, I would still rather her serenade me than Rihanna, whose voice is frankly 'ugly,' IMO. Far as Taylor goes, she's sold more albums and at least she's credited as the primary writer of her music. Haven't seen her in concert, because I'm not a fan of her music -- but she couldn't be a worse performer than Rihanna. Rihanna's numbers aren't that great. Those #1 singles are machine despensed like a something from a gum machine. She can't sell albums to save her life, which is why she's forced to release them every year so that Def Jam can break even with her.
To sum it up: the value of Rihanna's career is only worth as much as where her latest song is currently on iTunes. When her hits dry up, it'll be curtains for her. She won't be able to morph into an album seller, or reinvent herself as a respected touring act. She's basically a Jeopady question waiting to happen.

Eh, it's a little unfair to compare album sales with artists who were releasing music when the industry killed singles to prop up albums. For instance, the vast majority of J.Lo's album sales came before the single returned as a mainstream format (in the form of digital downloads). As much as Rihanna's album sales are derided, every album she's released after the first one has gone platinum and she's certainly released a lot of them. 5 platinum albums, 1 2x-platinum album, and 1 gold album is a pretty phenomenal haul when there are so many people downloading your songs a la carte.
Rihanna has sold more albums (and way more singles) than Taylor Swift worldwide, and I believe this award mentioned something about global significance. AFAIC, being a songwriter doesn't automatically make you better, particularly when I think the songs you write are crap. So I just can't agree that Taylor Swift has been more successful.
There is clearly a machine in place to help make Rihanna successful. But that's been the case for countless artists through the years; Rihanna seems to be the x-factor because it's never worked this well before. I totally get not liking her, but there's no denying her success. "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis |
