Wow! I watched a 2 hour Jimi documentary last night on PBS.

The similarities between he and Prince are uncanny!

His love for his Guitar, his passion when playing it (facial expressions included),

writing lyrics in the rain, (even his handwriting), his need for his own studio (Electric Lady),

which was a pioneer move on his part and so much more!

Also his flair for clothing styles (which were not just for shows),

Jimi is shown wearing pants with buttons on the bottom sides like Prince had in the eighties!

I mean this cat had Style! so ahead of his time!

I highly recommend this documentary for any Prince fan and Jimi fan of course.

It also has the full version of "The Star Spangled Banner" at Woodstock ... WOW!!!

It covers many years of his life with a large series of concert footage.

Very very informative with rarely seen footage and still shots of Jimi...

Don't miss it!

And like it was stated in the other thread:

Can't be any similarities, if one is imitating the original lol

But agree that Jimi was way ahead of his time

Yes, I watched it also. Jimi was a "beast" with personality. He without a doubt loved not only music but also his guitar. Hmm, sounds familiar. The documentary never appeared to make him a drug addict as some may think he was. Let's face it, he played Woodstock, maybe a lil weed and stuff but no addict. Only addicted to the music.

Gone too soon. guitar

Reposted here from previous thread on this topic from a few days ago, for reasons of completism biggrin

....................

This documentary was shown here in UK last night. Was worth watching if a little shallow in places, but little new to me info-wise, though there were some nice snippets of live performances I'd never seen before, but all very short, apart from Star-Spangled Banner at Woodstock.

This was produced with the co-operation of the Hendrix Estate, but even so, was disappointed by them still propagating the 'sanitised' version of his demise, which, according to the widely available books I've read, just no longer holds water compared to the claims of ambulance personnel etc who were at the scene of his passing in London, and later conflicting claims of alleged 'witnesses' after the fact - as outlined here in this interesting article - http://www.classicrockmag...i-hendrix/

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Finally found time to watch it today and it was very good. He seemed to be a very fun, but shy guy. I love how they outlined that he only really cared about two things, his music and women. lol The part where he goes back to Seattle (during his tour) and sees his family for the first time since he left home was kind of touching. It's heartwrenching how short lived his life was. To think if he had lived a little while longer....

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

45 Years Ago: Jimi Hendrix’s Album Cover Banned

Read the article before you click for the pic. biggrin Don't spoil it and post it. cool

Saying the unflattering image of 19 naked women, which you can see here in...NSFW glory, had “nothing to do with him,” Hendrix immediately made it pretty clear that his U.K. label, Track Records, was behind the artwork:

“Folks in Britain are kicking against the cover. Man, I don’t blame them. I wouldn’t have put this picture on the sleeve myself, but it wasn’t my decision. It’s mostly all bulls—.”

According to John Perry’s ‘Electric Ladyland‘ book, while Hendrix was otherwise occupied overseas, label boss Chris Stamp sent a photographer to a local speakeasy and offered the girls five pounds to appear topless (or 10 to go fully nude) for the photo shoot.

Nobody involved seemed particularly impressed with the final results. As one of the models, Reine Sutcliffe, told Melody Maker, “It makes us look like a load of old tarts. It’s rotten. Everyone looked great, but the picture makes us look old and tired. We were trying to look too sexy, but it didn’t work out.”

The idea, of course, was to generate publicity, but as Perry points out, the ban was limited to “a few provincial record ships in York, Hull and Bristol,” and their decision sparked only minor coverage in the country’s tabloid papers. Besides, ‘Electric Ladyland’ was one of the most eagerly anticipated albums of the year and needed no help selling in large numbers.

The incident prompted Hendrix to write an extremely passionate and detailed letter — complete with sketches like the one below — to his American record label, explaining exactly how he wanted the ‘Electric Ladyland’ art to look when they released it. They rejected his request, instead choosing the now famous red and yellow close-up of the guitarist’s face for the cover, and relegating most of the photographs he sent them to the inside panels.

^^^I love his handwriting! As well as his detailed sketch of how he wanted things to look on the over and inside.
