So Wrong They're Right

So Wrong They're Right (1995) chronicles a 10,000 mile journey around the US in search of "trackers"—fanatical collectors of 8-Track tapes, those funky clunky pre-recorded plastic cartridges from the '70s. Russ Forster and Dan Sutherland capture over 20 interviews, brimming with reminiscences, rants, political diatribes, fantasies, fix-it tips, sales pitches, and everything else that defines the skeptical yet inquisitive mind of the 8-Track enthusiast. More than a film about pop-music nostalgia, it serves as a statement of outrage from a population of consumers who are tired of being told what to consume.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Technology of any kind is as relevant and useful when it meets your needs, I ain't mad at them. lol I have some friends who have a serious collection of 8-tracks and equipment. I'll try to see if I can find a local Chicago Show, "Wild Chicago" program about 8-tracks collectors.

What kinda sad, fewer and fewer folks can fix old electronics... we have one shop in Chicago but he's basically a crook. lol

There's a place in Arlington, TX that still manufacture 8-track tapes called KTS Productions. No one makes the players, but I've heard that a guy is trying to get a patent to start making new ones.

Reanimated Next: 8-Tracks?

By Tim Stegall, Fri., Aug. 30, 2013, Austin Chronicle

No, really.

.

"A band I'm in, Dupree, put out an 8-track in addition to a vinyl LP," says local guitarist Jake Langley.

.

A format even dustier and further back on Goodwill's shelves than cassettes? Austin jazz organ trio Dupree isn't exactly a band comfortably filed next to Seventies relics like Boston and Deep Purple 8-tracks. Suddenly that Z-28 glove box is getting crowded.

.

"It was a very popular format, particularly with Blue Note, but also Prestige and Verve released a lot of music on 8-track," says Langley. "You have to realize, pre-cassette, most cars had 8-track players. It was the only portable form of music out there. Jazz was trying to get fans to take their music on the road, or to the beach. Take it around."

.

But, but, but – 8-tracks!?

.

"There's a sound that they have that I grew up with, and the other guys in the band did, too. We also thought it would be enjoyable for people who grew up with that to be able to buy a brand-new one, though I'm not sure how many people are making 8-tracks. We might be the only group that has an 8-track in the last 30 years, right?"

.

There was Cheap Trick's The Latest in 2009.

.

"Yep! In fact, we knew about that, because that's how we found out how to get ours manufactured. There's a little mom and pop operation in Arlington that made the Cheap Trick 8-tracks. That's who made ours [KTS Productions: www.ktsprod.com].'"

.

Dupree's Nuestro Camino 8-track has, in fact, sold out. It's on reorder (www.dupreeband.com).

One of my relatives had Bad on 8-track. Like the LP and cassette, it didn't have the extra song Leave Me Alone.

I wish him well in his endeavor of bring old, old, old school back. lol

I hopes he brings back the 8-tack player for cars... a guy I dated in high school still has his 8-track player in his 1971 Chevelle SS it kinda plays when it wants to. He refuses to take it out... he speaks of the cool factor. lol

You can still buy new reel to reel & cassette decks and VCRs, so why not? Malaco Records still releases albums on cassette. My mom buys them from their catalog.

.

It's kind of expensive for car 8-track players but they can be repaired here.

Thanks for the hook-up.

I texted him the link.. "he's ripping his 8-track out (as I type) of his car to send to Barry's ASP. lol

Many young adults (men in particular) complain about the lack of jobs but these types specialty skills are very much in demand. These men and women are artisan's to me.
