The Police -- I think they're overrated. Convince me otherwise.

So they're being inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame this week.

I'm sorry, I just don't get it.

They've got some decent-sounding hits, but the whole thing is just lost on me. Sting's solo career as well.

What's so great about them?

I agree...they don't deserve to be so highly lauded while others like Blondie and the Sex Pistols aren't even in yet.

It ain't about the hits, oh POP fan. Their most interesting music was either never released as singles, or probably didn't place high on the charts. If I had only been privy to their hits I'd think they were overrated too - and even if you were familiar with their other music I can understand if you think they are. But dig deeper.

Sting's solo career as well.

Sux. Sting's solo material is a middle of the road, Adult Contemporary borefest.

Actually, one of my college friends was really into them. I've heard most of their stuff. Still nonplussed.

What's great about it that I'm supposed to be hearing?

Boo! Take your own advice and dig deeper. Sting's solo work is like fine wine, and reeks of classiness. But maybe that's what you mean by "boredom". I find much of it to be filled with more emotion than the Police stuff.

No one else was doing what they were doing...Reggatta de Blanc as they called it on record. They had a kind of reggae twist to the pop tunes. Plus the lyrics are good:

Murder By Numbers

Once that you've decided on a killing,
First you make a stone of your heart.
And if you find that your hands are still willing,
Then you can turn a murder into art.

There really isn't any need for bloodshed,
You just do it with a little more finesse.
If you can slip a tablet into someone's coffee,
Then it avoids an awful lot of mess.

It's murder by numbers, 1, 2, 3,
It's as easy to learn as your ABC.
Murder by numbers, 1, 2, 3,
It's as easy to learn as your ABC.

Now if you have a taste for this experience
And you're flushed with your very first success,
Then you must try a twosome or a threesome
And you'll find your conscience bothers you much less

Because murder is like anything you take to
It's a habit-forming need for more and more.
You can bump off every member of your family
And anybody else you find a bore

Because it's murder by numbers, 1, 2, 3,
It's as easy to learn as your ABC
Murder by numbers, 1, 2, 3,
It's as easy to learn as your ABC.

Now you can join the ranks of the illustrious
In history's great dark hall of fame.
All our greatest killers were industrious
At least the ones that we all know by name.

But you can reach the top of your profession
If you become the leader of the land,
For murder is the sport of the elected,
And you don't need to lift a finger of your hand

Because it's murder by numbers, 1, 2, 3,
It's as easy to learn as your ABC.
Murder by numbers, 1, 2, 3,
It's as easy to learn as your A, B, C, D, E,...

You have to be in the right frame of mind to get it..for example Invisible Sun or Tea In The Sahara just can't be appreciated with a bunch of people around etc. Once thats accomplished it all falls into place.

u just dont know what ur missin my friend... i dug how they started out as a punk band but at the same time they influenced by all types of music from jazz 2 reggae 2 rock... and as 4 sting's solo career i say that, some may call him boring or middle of the road but hes gotten 2 work with some very diverse people the world over by just doin him and not worryin bout what the fickle industry thinks...

Hmm, I'm not sure you'll even like it if I have to explain. I'm more into their reggae influenced music, and the songs that Sting and Stuart Copeland stretched out on when it came to bass and drums. Like "Voices Inside My Head", "Driven To Tears", "Shadows In The Rain", "Hungry For You", "Tea In The Sahara"...etc.

"Voices Inside My Head"

From Zenyatta Mondatta.

Funkiest white band song ever. They're bad, they deserve it. Their music still sounds fresh to me. Especially their ZM and Ghost In The Machine, which I feel was way ahead of it's tiime.

Copelands one of THE best drummers also. My drumming hero.

Other songs...check these:
Hungry For You (J'aurais Toujours Faim De Toi)
Rehumanize Yourself
One World (Not Three) (Fierce drumming!)
When The World Is Running Down
Driven To Tears

and many others...

The Police were great musicians and a great singles band. Their albums, however, leave a lot to be desired.

Like most bands their ego gets the best of them and they lose sight of why they were making music in the first place.

Convince me that you are worthy of being convinced. So you obviously like Prince, who else are you into before I waste my time explaining anything.

I Like The Police&some of there Albums, but I when I watched that VH1 Top 100 of All-Time I'm Like Hell NAW they aren't a Top 10 Band of All-Time let alone that Influential of a Musical Act IMHO to get that kind of Love.but they had there Moments.Sting Solo: dug the Hell out of His First 2 Albums plus Bring on the Night when He had Branford Marsalis&Omar Hakem among others there.but in the 90's with Me aside from His Unplugged Show&some good songs&a couple of Great Songs like"If I Ever Lose My Faith In You" not much else to move me much anymore.I think the Polic Wrote some Great Pop Songs&were Very Talented Musicians&whatnot&Belong in the Rock&Roll hall of Fame but they weren't a Knock Your Ass Out Act though.but they were Great to Really good Level IMHO at there Peak.

Sting turned into an embarrassment but the Police were really superb for a moment or two. And yes: you do need to do the full album immersion [Invisible Sun, Regatta de Blanc (always imagined this would be a BLOCKbuster with which they'd open an arena gig) Driven to Tears...]...

As a drummer, I was always inspired by Copeland's creative work.

They took Reggae, Punk and Jazz and mixed it all together.
If you think back to the late 70's and early 80's this is daring and cutting edge for that time.

I love THE POLICE but hate Sting post-police. He lost all credibility with me when he did Every Breathe You Take w/ P. Diddy whatshisface.
