Lol not too many people post here, I guess. I thank you for this because Amanda's absolutely right. I used to knock it when Spike Lee and Public Enemy did it but I've learned to respect that hustle.

Is there a downside to crowdfunding? 'Cause I don't understand why all unsigned artists, new and old, aren't on Kickstarter.

I think there's not a lot of comments because this video has been a thread/post before.Much of what she says is great and valid - bottom line message though, is that musicians won't/aren't having the possibility of making the money they used to. Unless you become an all-around "entertainer" or "celebrity" able to make money selling stuff like perfume, clothes, headphones, doing reality shows, acting, modeling, etc. If you want to do just music, don't expect to become a multi-millionaire, but if you're genuine & good, you can make a living - if you're happy with that like Amanda, then great - bless us with your life-changing musical art!

It's not a cure-all.
Don't forget that Amanda Palmer got herself famous enough to raise a million dollars by coming up in the traditional way - signed to a label. The Dresden Dolls got a lot of push when they were happening, got onto big festivals while still obscure, played a lot of NPR stations, all via typical industry connections. An up and coming artist won't be able to do that. But sure, people who are already famous might be able to raise big money.
But I do see some promise in the model, if peope are able to keep their costs down and give back a lot of value. Certainly royalties from recorded music are not going to be enough to pay for studio costs in the future when Spotify is paying something like $20 for 1 million plays.
