Ms. Hill out of jail, releases new track "Consumerism"

http://www.rollingstone.c...m-20131004

The track is a rager, sort of reminds me of "Its the end of the world as we know it (and i feel fine)"

The production is kind of cheap sounding, as was the production on the pre-jail track "Neurotic Society", with the same stream of consciousness style going.

Anyone know if the non-rapping vocal is a sample? Its certainly not Lauryn singing.

Glad Lauryn is out of jail, but I think I've lost interest in her. She is delusional IMO. She will only spew garbage about how she was jailed by "the man" and how she shouldn't pay taxes as retribution for slavery. Her most recent releases don't interest me much either.

Good luck to her, but I think I'm done unless she gets her head on straight and makes good use of her life and talent. Hating and blaming others for your mistakes is irresponsible.

I feel the same way.I've been done with her for years. All she's gonna do is spend all her time, writing these "angry" songs, bitching and whining about the evils of the world bored I feel sorry for her (and anyone else) who spends their life dwelling in negativity

Lauryn Hill Released From 'Orange Is the New Black' Prison

The former Fugees singer served a three-month sentence for tax evasion.

Lauryn Hill is a free woman.

The former Fugees singer has been released from federal prison, the same prison that inspired Netflix's Orange Is the New Black, as noted by TMZ, after serving a three-month sentence for tax evasion.

Hill reported for her sentence on July 8 after failing to pay taxes on approximately $1.5 million earned between 2005 and 2007. She served her time in a minimum security prison in Danbury, Conn., in open dormitory-style living quarters where inmates are expected to work jobs including maintenance, food service or landscaping.

Now that Hill has been released, she will be under parole supervision for a year. She will spend the next three months under home confinement, according to the Associated Press.

STORY: Lauryn Hill Starts...n Sentence

While Orange Is the New Black takes place in a Litchfield, N.Y., prison, the story's inspiration -- Piper Kerman, who serves as an advisor on the series -- actually served time in the Danbury prison where Hill was locked up.

On Thursday, Hill released a new song titled "Consumerism." The track was written before Hill's incarceration and mixed while she was behind bars. Listen to "Consumerism" here.

The track was written before Hill's incarceration

Maybe she will literally "change her tune" after serving time?

Sigh... i am somewhat done with Lauryn. I love Miseducaton and her unreleased stuff from the 2002-08 era.

But, all she is doing now is bitching and whining.. the stuff doesn't speak to me like old stuff. And, i saw how homophobic and psycho her fans can be which also turned me off...

I just want her to stay out of trouble now and take care of all her damn kids. These songs she makes now are cause she is basically forced...

Is her heart really even in it anymore? she seemed reluctant to become a rapper in the first place from what i heard. But, she gave it her all int he 90s and early 00's! but as we know religion, natsy preachers, and a guy who didn't care for her. Fucked her up mentally...

Her heeart is not in music anymore and i don't know if it ever will be.

Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

All music is shit music and no music is real- gunsnhalen

I need to read the lyrics to see if they make sense...but her flow was sick....also the production company could've synced the track better...

Her delivery gets a C-.

And it's the same type production that hampered her previous song that I forgot the name to. I don't dig this at all.

@Guns, yeah her heart's definitely not in this anymore. She's only doing it for the money...oddly enough.

^You'd think that if she were doing it for the money she'd go all "Miseducation" on us.

But that's when she was "inspired". I don't see no "inspiration" behind this.

I listened earlier and yeah.......ummmmm.......well.........uhhhhh.....hmmmmm.

Okay, I am happy that she is back with her kids. The kids had nothing to do with this, and one is really young.

I have always preferred her singing over her rapping, and now even moreso.

She is an angry woman who probably feels like she got fucked by the system. I doubt we will see many love songs coming from her.

She SUCKS. She USED 2b good, but has suffered a long, tired career decline over the past how ever many years since "Miseducation." She's totally delusional and I'd bet paranoid/schizophrenic or bipolar too. Who really knows? But the main thing now is that she's reunited with her fam. and that she sees (hopefully) that she's really not THAT "special." Her tide ebbed and flowed years ago. She's too self-absorbed 4 my tastes.

Hungry? Just look in the mirror and get fed up.

I have to agree with the nonplussed consensus, sadly. I thought the first track had something going for it, even with the bedroom production, but this one seems to be more of the same but without the charm. And, again, the worldview on show is unremittingly bleak, which is kind of depressing - and annoying, by this stage.

I don't know the whole story, so I can't really judge.

But its obvious that she been through some turmoil, whatever that maybe, and it played a negative factor pretaining her motivation to make music.

I don't mind angry or depressive sentiments, as long as there's passion behind it. Somehow, I don't think Lauryn has the passion to make music anymore based on her recent outputs.

LOL. Well her children need to be her number-one priority if they aren't already. It's clear music or even sending a clear message isn't anymore.

You guys, she been on this schitt since Miseducation! This whole track reminds me of this rushed rap part of her smash hit Grammy award winning single "Doo Wop (That Thing)"
