Kurt Cobain is an icon not because he died, but because he was the face of Grunge music in the early 90s. Other bands like Pearl Jam and Soundgarden owe a lof of their breakthrough to Cobain and "Smells Like Teen Spirit". Grunge changed the way people thought about music, and pushed hair metal bands off the radio and off MTV. If anything, I think him dying actually hurt is legend, not helped it.
