She didn't growl very much in her earlier days, save "Tell Me" off of Destiny's Child's debut and "632-5792" I guess. What characterized her vocal styling in DC was melisma (riffs and runs) which could be said to be excessive, though always precise. She growls a lot presently, in the studio and live.
