NEW Boy George Album - New Record Label Boy George has signed with Kobalt Records - who just released the latest from the Pet Shop Boys, "Electric." George's newest album - "This Is What I Do" comes out October 28th! BOY GEORGE SIGNS WITH KOBALT; TO RELEASE FIRST STUDIO ALBUM IN 18 YEARS
30 August 2013, London: - Multiple Brit & Grammy award-winner Boy George, seller of over 150 million records and one of our generation’s most iconic artists, has signed a worldwide label services deal with Kobalt Label Services (KLS) to release a thrilling new album of original material. ‘This Is What I Do’, his first studio album in 18 years, will be issued on George’s own Very Me Records on 28th October and will be supported by live dates across the UK.
The album features a string of guest musicians including DJ Yoda, Kitty Durham (Kitty Daisy & Lewis), Ally McErlaine (Texas / Red Sky July), MC Spee (Dreadzone) and Nizar Al Issa, many of whom will perform as George’s band on his live dates. ‘This Is What I Do’ was written by George and longtime writing partners John Themis, Kevan Frost and Richie Stevens (Soul II Soul, Tina Turner, Simply Red, Culture Club). Richie Stevens also produced the record at London’s Cowshed Studios. The album also features writing collaborations with legendary producer Youth, and a version of Yoko Ono’s Death Of Samantha. It was mixed by Dave Bascombe (Tears For Fears, Depeche Mode, Pendulum, Doves). The KLS deal comes in the wake of George signing to management titans Jazz Summers and Tim Parry of Big Life Management. The pair are working to repeat with George what they have achieved for Scissor Sisters, Snow Patrol and The Verve. Boy George said today: “This is the first record I have ever made and owned myself. It’s very exciting to be a bit more in control of my work and to be doing this independently feels very liberating. Working with Kobalt adds to the excitement. I feel that I’m going to get more personal involvement from them, and have been very impressed with their work with Pet Shop Boys recently.” Summers added: “Over the last year Boy George has written some brilliant songs, and together with Richie Stevens has produced an amazing album, his first serious studio album in 18 years since ‘Cheapness and Beauty’. Richie has managed to capture George at his best and together they have made an album that reflects all of George’s influences, from reggae to rock to country to soul. George’s iconic voice sounds better than ever in this stunning collection of songs. The album title ‘This Is What I Do’ says it all.
“We at Big Life are truly excited to be able to work with Kobalt Label Services on such an amazing project. The worldwide expertise of Richard Sanders coupled with Paul Hitchman’s experienced knowledge of digital releases and social media heads up an exciting team of people who really understand how to break artists internationally. It’s the perfect home for George’s label ‘Very Me Records’ and we look forward to great success together.” Paul Hitchman, Managing Director, Kobalt Label Services commented: “Kobalt Label Services works with a wide range of artists from the newest developing artists to global icons, but for us it always starts with the music, and with ‘This Is What I Do’ Boy George has created an album of exceptional songs, spanning the personal and universal. We feel privileged and excited to be working with George and the Big Life management team to support the release of such a distinctive record by such a unique artist.” Boy George needs little introduction. With a career spanning over 30 years he first shot to international stardom in the 1980s as the front man of one of the UK’s biggest exports – the Brit & Grammy Award-winning Culture Club – and has had continued success as a solo artist. He has sold over 150 million records with top 10 hits in every country. Boy George is also a hugely respected house DJ, playing for twenty years, and continues to DJ successfully in clubs all over the world. However it is his new album, ‘This Is What I Do’, that reinforces his first true love, writing & singing.

Yes, that new Pet Shop Boys CD had great distribution too! Whatever Kobalt is, Prince is supposed to release his next project on it, and Courtney Love/Hole next (according to her).

It will be a flop. I used to enjoy his music in the 80's and 90's, but he ruined his voice. He sounds awful now. He can't hold or hit a single note. And he's such a nasty piece of work, so rude and arrogant to everyone. He hyped some big 30th anniversary Culture Club reunion, but delivered nothing. If any album deserves to flop, it's this one which I'm sure it will. Couldn't happen to a nicer person.

I'm happy BG pulled himself together finally! I was worried that he would end up another statistic. Always liked his soulful vocals. Glad he has followed Prince in signing a new deal and going independent. Also like his new BUTCH look.
This will be a success for him, stop hating on him! will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. ![]()

He was a miserable cunt for years, but he turned over a new leaf and got his health and attitude in order.

Sorry I don't believe he changed. He is who he is. He may act differently in the media but it's not genuine to me. It's just a fake thing to sell records. People say don't hate on him, but he hates on everyone. I gave him a chance for many years. I have every right to feel how I feel. I have good reasons for my feelings. He promised a 30th anniversary tour with Culture Club but did not deliver. That was the last straw for me. I wish he would just go away.

Hmm he's covering Yoko Ono. That should be interesting.

I've heard that song. It's called Death of Samantha. I don't like it. It's acoustic stripped down with just raspy vocals. How could he be so good in the 80's and so horrible now. He really truly has lost it.

I don't like this cover either, but I really enjoyed most of the original songs, more than I've enjoyed any of his other solo work tbh. But then my favourite CC album is the reunion one, so I'm probably in the minority.
Edit: Although on close inspection I am sad to see that my favourite new track from the Meltdown show (Bloodsugar) did not make the cut. [Edited 9/26/13 15:27pm]

On CC 30th reunion, he commented on that recently and said they still wanted to do something but weren't quite 'match ready', so he's doing this in the meantime. Not that I think it'll make any difference to your opinion of him, but just wanted to put it out there.

First single is King of Everything, apparently. OP, don't know if you want to add the video to the top post?
I really like it. I know some people will rip him for his voice, but I don't think he sounds bad at all. He's done it some damage, obviously, but it's still beautiful in its own way, and most importantly he hasn't lost his soul. Will be pre-ordering the album!

He always has some boring excuse. I've heard it all before. What's not match ready is his voice. It's damaged by drugs and smoking. The other members of Culture Club can still play their instruments fine. They are always made to keep waiting while George gets to selfishly go out and do what he wants. Doesn't match ready sound very vague to you? What does that even mean?

*lol* He said something about interpersonal politics, but that he thinks they're past it now. TBH I'm not that bothered, I was just mentioning because I saw him talking about it earlier in the year. I understand you feel burned by him, but for my own part, I try not to get too invested in the personal drama of celebrities and just focus on being happy when they release something I like. Just too much work, you know? I do understand where you're coming from, though, sort of. I mean, do I wish JC Chasez would stop fucking around and release another album already? Absolutely! Do I feel sad when I see him wasting his talent on stupid dance shows and girl bands? Sure. Am I entitled to demand that JC Chasez make another album just to please me and the the rest of his fans? Not even a little.
So, I love Boy George's voice (yes, even now, and I'm a recent fan so you can't blame it on nostalgia), and he's releasing new music that I like, so I'm happy about that. If he gets together with the rest of CC and they put out something I like, I will be happy about that too, but in the meantime, I'm just going to enjoy this.

Thanks for posting. I really like it too. He seems to know he has fucked up and is finally dealing with that. Hell that's more than we can say for a whole lot of folks in the business. So I appauled his awareness and will support his efforts. I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

No, fans aren't entitled to anything, but I as a fan want a artist to be honest with me. Is JC Chasez promising his fans something? If you choose not to release an album and do other things that's fine with me, as long as you don't get your fans' hopes up by continually promising stuff. What I don't like about George is he promises things and then doesn't deliver. If he doesn't want to do Culture Club just say so and be honest with the fans. He's been asked about the reunion and each time he gives a different reason and/or excuse. I think an artist needs to have integrity and tell the truth. I feel he's the type of person who talks the talk, but never ever walks the walk. Sorry, but I don't believe the supposed changes in him are genuine. He just seems very phony to me. I have a sixth sense about people, and I'm rarely wrong. Just my feeling about George.

I guess I'm just coming from the place of being a former MJ fan, the undisputed King of Not Delivering. You didn't stay a fan for very long if you expected him to keep even half his promises!
