the death of the 12" versions/extended remixes of songs LIST YOUR FAVORITES!

the death of vinyl aside...why does it seem like the floor just collapsed on this market? i would think people still go to clubs or just enjoy an extended version of their favorite songs. even blurred lines is just getting regular album version treatment....granted i'm hardly in the club much anymore, but you cant even buy them anymore

what gives?neutral

Often times they did the remixes for songs so people would buy the singles. Why buy something you'd already have on the album? Songs are still remixed in other countries (not really extended versions but remix remixes if you know what I mean) because CD singles are still the only thing that counts in some countries. And with Soundcloud you get an infinite amount of remixes (often better than professional ones) for free

This is what stopped me from buying singles.

What is the point if u get what is already of the album?

Maybe the songs already sound like a remix. razz It could be that many people today have a short attention span and don't want to listen to long songs. There's a local record store that still sell maxi singles, but they're mostly techno songs and underground dance groups. The remixes today tend to be house and techno, which all sound alike to me. Are there still popular remixers like the ones in the past like Arthur Baker, Masters At Work, Tom Moulton, or Shep Pettibone today?

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Not everyone bought albums though. Some people only bought 45s, and others bought maxi singles with remixes. Some acts like The Beatles and Johnnie Taylor would release non-album singles and many acts had B-sides. In the 1980's there are a lot of cases where the version played on the radio and on a 45 single would be different than the album version (ie. No One Is To Blame by Howard Jones). I remember some people would buy the album because of the single version and would be mad that the album version is not the same. lol

I dig but I'm only speaking 4 me.

I spend a lot of money on maxi singles...............2 bad they no longer exist.

It just seems to me all of the remixes were kinda sounding the same for a while. You used to have people like Mimi who would go back into the studio to record an alternate vocal specifically for a remix but you really don't have that anymore. Maybe the labels aren't willing to invest that kind of dough/studio time for a remix??? And I'm sure seasoned remixers demand a certain salary that labels may not be willing to pay any longer. Based off of the remixes I've listened to over the past several years, there was very little creativity. Just the same generic, loud, driving electronic or House beats. shrug

So many unofficial remixes get made and shared and played.

I miss the 12"/extended remixes from PRINCE, that's for sure!

He definitely knew how to deliver on those! I think they are some of the most precious things in my life, and whenever I need a pick-me-up... I break out the vinyl and genuflect on the brilliance.

I don't know about Mike. He didn't really have any remixes until the Bad album. The only song from Thriller that had an extended mix on a maxi single was Billie Jean. The other maxi singles like Beat It and Thriller just had the album versions. There was You Can't Win Part 1 & 2 from The Wiz soundtrack before this. The Jacksons had several remix/extended singles though.

Dangerous and Bad extended remixes certainly helped-- but of course he was already
A megastar by them

I was just thinking today that Prince's early remixes were legendary, but now his "remixes" are just a different vocal with house music in the background. What a step down.
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

I can only shake my head and sigh at how the industry killed singles, both 7" and 12" versions. disbelief

Prince and Mint Condition made the best 12" going. Both created entire new songs around the theme of the original.

Mariah & David Morales created magic. I love how she recomposed her music when she collaborated with him.
