Congratulate Janet Congratulate JANET for being the 7th most succesful artist in history of Billboard Charts! She left behind other legendary artists such as Michael Jackson, The Rolling Stones and Prince, to name a few. But let's not forget that JANET's artistry and influence is far more important and iconic than her chart success. Source:http://www.billboard.com/...ts-most-no

So MiMi has more #1 Pop & R&B singles than Madge, but Madge still beats her in Charting success? Hmmm....

Madonna has much more Top 5 / Top 10 hits than Mariah. That's why.

I think she does. Maybe not enough, but it will come with the time. I mean, she already recieved all the major awards fro artistic acgievment (MTV vanguard, MTV Icon, MTV Legend Award, Billboard Achievment Award, Radio Legend Award, World Music Awarads Lofetime Award, MOBO lifetime award... just to name a few lmao) And she's still very young. Actually, among females, only Whitney won more awards than Janet. Swedish national TV aired a special few years ago called "25 years since Janet changed the wordl" with experts explaining how different and influental she is. We also had BBC documentary about the smae subject "Janet Takes Control". And so on, and so on...
Some people just aen't informed. Janet is getting the recognition she deserves, she's just too polite and not yelling about it via social networks.
She even sold much more records then it's usually stated. She sold around 90 million albums alone and some 60 million singles. Add to it that she had best selling VHS's and DVD's (only RN184 VHS was sold in 3,5 million globally). So it's around 160-170 million.
I can't wait the new album. According to tweets from her stuff it's closer than we think. Much closer.

In most cases, the media is talking about the pop chart, as that's the mainstream one and considered most important. The others are considered niche genres, and usually not mentioned. George Strait has 60 number one singles on the country chart, but he's hardly mentioned outside of country music oriented press. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. Isnt the list just based on the number of times an artist has entered into the hot 100 charts?...(which really doesnt mean anythng (well at least to me it doesnt). Anybody can come out with a song and it can peak on the chart. It doesnt mean the song reached number one or was significant. The lowest Michael peaked was at 10 and I believe the same with Mariah and there are people higher than them on this list that have peak entries of 80, 65, 76, 64, 90, etc That seems kinda sketchy to me They are counting songs that werent even popular hits and if Im correct Mariah/MJ would be way higher if they just counted Top 10/number one hit entries.

If one act has 5 top 10 singles only, and another has 50 Top 100, the one with 50 has more chart hits the the other. You could say that an act that has 20 singles that got no higher than 25 has more chart hits than a "1 hit wonder" that had a single go #1. Hitting number 1 or Top 10 doesn't necessarily make a song more popular or important. There's many number 1s that are long forgotten, and there's songs like Isn't She Lovely by Stevie Wonder that never charted on any chart except the Adult Contemporary one, that still get airplay today. . James Brown has hit the pop chart around 100 times, but only has around 7 or 8 Top 10 singles and no number 1s, although he has many on the R&B chart. Some acts were not really successful as far as singles go, but sold lots of albums like Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Rush, AC/DC, Emerson Lake & Palmer, and Metallica. Then there's the Grateful Dead who were more successful with touring than with their records. There's also the Sex Pistols, whose album Never Mind The Bullocks didn't even hit the Top 100 albums in the US, nor did they have any hit singles, and I don't think it sold much in the US, yet Rolling Stone had it as the 2nd best album at one time. So radio hits is not always a criteria for popularity or influence. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

^^Bad To The Bone by George Thorogood is another song that wasn't a hit, but it was still used in a lot of commercials, movies, TV shows, etc. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Anita Baker's tweet makes a great point. Janet and MJ popularized the dance/performance music video. Look at the artists who have come along since the video age and made it on this list. . It really has me questioning, also, what they based this list on. . Starship (if they are only counting them as "Starship" and not any of the other incarnations) is higher than Fleetwood Mac? . Katy Perry has more hits/entries than The Miracles or THe Pointer Sisters? Janet has more entries than Michael? It's just a strange list to me. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

Maybe they made it up, especially since I don't see Glee & Lil' Wayne, who were said to have passed up The Beatles & Elvis awhile back. Maybe the Glee/Lil Wayne thing was made up. Anyone can go look at Billboard back issues and see how many songs each act has charted. James Brown has around 100 entries, which is more than most of the acts on this list, and he's 68. . It might go by the actual amount of time the songs spent on the chart. A particular song might have only appeared on the Hot 100 1 week and dropped off, another song may spend 2 months on it. They're both one entry, but the 2 month song remained longer on the chart. So maybe it counts for more. A #1 song might drop off the chart quickly, and spent less time overall on the Hot 100 than another song that hit #12. Are today's charts even the same, since they're mainly based on airplay, when in the past it was more based on sales. There's many songs in the 1970's & 1980's that recieved a lot of airplay, but didn't chart that high. There's also regional hits, where they might be popular in certain areas of the US, but not others. But they sold enough to chart, but may be unknown or little known in another area. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I'm guessing how many weeks they spent at number-one/top ten. Plus, Janet had more top ten entries than her brother. Katy charted more thanks to iTunes. Starship dominated the mid-1980s (but folks easily forget that because compared to their earlier incarnations as Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship, they're the forgettable chapter of that band's history).

I say they don't count either. Glee's a TV show/brand so technically they won't be included in a top artists list (Elvis is still featured at No. 1 on Joel Whitburn's latest book, neither Glee nor Lil Wayne were included on the list). Most of Lil Wayne's entries were as a guest performer or featured artist on someone else's song.

Yeah.... how weird they talked so much about Wayne having like the most top 40s... yet he is not in the top 100 list? odd... so do they not count guest spots anymore? Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

^ I remember them saying he was the only rapper with the most number ones or Top 10's lol some bs like that lol thats why I cant take billboard seriously anymore
Thats because its easy to chart and to get number ones on the Billboards today. I really dont care about Billboard or take them seriously because their criteria changes every year which makes what they are looking for confusing. Janet has more "entries" than Michael because she continued to make music and release singles while Michael semi retired from music. Michael's last real studio album was Invincible (2001) and he didnt release a real album in almost a decade. Janet continued to release three more albums and a few singles this past decade but none of those singles made the Top 10. Her last Hot 100 Top 10 was All 4 You (2001). **********************************
With that being said I was wrong Janet has ONE more Top 10 hot 100 entry above Michael as a solo act but most of MJs number one's charted much longer...
However... if you combine his Jackson 5/Jacksons chart positions he technically does have more
| |
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
"most of MJs number one's charted much longer"
This can't be true since MJ has MORE Number One Hits (3 to be exact) and MORE Top 10 Hits (1 to be exact) and yet he is behind Janet.
But lets take a closer look: Michael Jackson:
First No1: Ben. Atop the chart 1 week Second No1: Don't Stop Til You Get Enough 1 week Third No1: Rock With You 3 weeks Fourth No1: Billie Jean 7 weeks Fifth No1: Beat It 3 weeks Sixth No1: I Just Can't Stop Loving You 1 week Seventh No1: Bad 2 weeks Eighth No1: The Way You Make Me Feel 1 week Ninth No1: Man In The Mirror 2 weeks Tenth No1: Dirty Diana 1 week Eleventh No1: Black Or White 7 weeks Twelth No1: You Are Not Alone 1 week Thirteenth No1: Say Say Say 6 weeks
That's a total of 36 weeks atop the chart for 13 songs.
If you don't include collaborations thats 30 weeks for 12 songs.
*******************************************
Janet Jackson:
First No1: When I Think Of You 2 weeks Second No1: Miss You Much 4 weeks Third No1: Escapade 3 weeks Fourth No1: Black Cat 1 week Fifth No1: Love Will Never Do 1 week Sixth No1: That's The Way Love Goes 8 weeks Eigth No1: Together Again 2 weeks Ninth No1: Doesn't Really Matter 3 weeks Tenth No1: All For you 7 weeks
That's a total of 33 weeks atop the chart for 10 songs
********************************************
Thus, Janet's Number One songs actually stayed atop the chart LONGER than Michael's.
I find it hilarious that you simply can't let a great, talented, and deserving artist be congratulated and celebrated without negative comments and comparisons. [Edited 9/14/13 6:05am] [Edited 9/14/13 6:06am]

More like top 20. There's a lot of songs I loved when I was little that I didn't realise did so bad on the charts because they were actually played. Now it's just the same 20 songs over and over again. It's relatively recent too.

Who knows? Billboard revises too much for my liking.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
If you read the Billboard article it states that they base the All Time list off of how many entries the artists has and out of those entries how many of those songs reached the top 10 or number 1. That is why people like Lil Wayne isn't on this list. Yes he has a lot of entries but only about 15% of those entries actually reached the top 10 and he only has like one #1. His entrie- to- hit ratio is terrible. And that's also why Janet is above Michael and Whitney. They both have more #1's than her but she has more top 10's and top 5's than both of them. Janet has always been a more successful singles artist than Michael and Whitney and that's what they base this list off of. [Edited 9/14/13 11:14am]

^This.
Plus you also have to look at how long each single stayed on the charts before they fell off the chart. And vice versa which would be the chart entry position as well.
Further to that, how many #2's they have and how many weeks they peaked at #2 (Janet's main ballad single of each her first three big albums all peaked at #2: Lets Wait A While, Come Back To Me, AnyTime AnyPlace...I get so lonely almost hit #2, but actually peaked at #3). Then you have top 5's, top 10's etc. and other factors.
In all, Janet has 27 top ten Hot 100 singles. Cant hate on that or question why she is ranked higher.

You can do this with other acts like: Paul McCartney/Beatles/Wings/Fireman/Percy Thrillington, Phil Collins/Genesis/Brand X/Phil Collins' Big Band/Flaming Youth, Wham!/George Michael, Commodores/Lionel Richie, or Kenny Rogers/First Edition. Although I don't think Flaming Youth & Brand X had any hits. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Glad to see my girl getting some props again. It's effed up just how underrated she truly is. She's one of those blueprint artists who came to prominence in the '80s and had legions of acts tailoring their style and performance after her, but she barely gets the credit. She has more Billboard awards than any artist, is the only artist nominated in the Rock, Dance, Pop, Rap and R&B categories at the Grammys, has more R&B #1s than any other female except Aretha (and more than her brother MJ, too), and there are many other records she still holds. A true pop/R&B legend. I'm just champing at the bit to hear her upcoming music. Little details keep filtering out bit by bit, with the latest being various producers Tweeting about working on songs with her, her choreographer Tweeting that Janet "misses her fans as much as they miss her #holdtight", and her make-up guy Tweeting "sofuckingexcited #teamjanet". 2014 will likely mark her return.
