It was the biggest selling album of 1990. It matched and one-upped previous chart accomplishments set by THRILLER and BORN IN THE USA when it became one of the only albums to have 7 top 10 Hot 100 hits, but all of RN's hits were top 5 while the other two albums 7 singles were at various places in the top 10. Here she is getting the MTV Video Vanguard Award in 1990

It was no surprise to me, that Magiq was the one, that gave her the award!

Such an amazing janet album start to finish just like Velvet Rope. Out of the two, VR has aged better, but I can play RN start to finish more often than not. I wish she got more props for it and was even bigger with it.

Argubly my fav track on the album. This album was Janet's peak IMO. Jimmy and Terry weren't playing around with this one.

Whats great about the album to me is how it doesn't really sound like anything else production wise from that period.

Of course there are similarities as there would be as Jam/Lewis were busy with other artists at the time too, but most of it, particually up to "miss you much", has that same "feel" throughout the album that makes it surprisenly cohesive for a pop record. Still find the album version of "alright" boring though.

Janet has been extremely low key since she got married(secretly). Most celebrity women. when they marry they are on every talk show and magazine cover, flashing their ring. Not Janet! She has almost disappeared off the earth! I hope she is ok.

Ain't that the truth. It might sound silly and cliché, but that album changed my life. It showed me that being a woman wasn't all about looking and acting a certain way -- that I could have opinions, be intelligent, and that there's a whole variety of ways to BE a woman. And that I wasn't crazy for being concerned about what was going on in the world. And I think often of how relevant that message still is today.

I like hearing stories like that too, felt I wanted to be a good girl too, but I had a bad-ass side anyway briefly before cooling down, and I'd be lying if I said RN1814 wasn't the perfect distraction! lol

IMO, Janet ditching these guys, who really shaped her sound, was a mistake. Her career was never the same. Her brother did the same thing with the same results.

Well, there weren't times she still used them with additional producers besides Rene and people were starting to not feel her including long time fans, and the cohesiveness of her albums were never the same since though I think Discipline was a fine and underrated effort going in the right direction again

Yeah, although I agree with NP about Jam & Lewis. I do also think she could include new blood into their well proven mix though. I don't fault her for wanting to branch out and try new things and work with new people. However, time (so far) has proven that she's at her best when those guys are deeply involved in the overall vision for the project. They're just family at this point.

-

For instance, they were involved with 20 y.o. but that was Jermaine Dupri's dream job. From what I understand he pretty much limited their judgment about the songs they worked on. This is why I don't consider 20YO a real Janet record. "Enjoy" and "Take Care" were both beautiful because they had no fingerprints of JD on them. Hell, even the Avila Brothers can do Janet better than most of the average new cats.

-

"Damita Jo" was a solid effort as quiet as it's kept. I feel this record is the prototype for her comeback. Jam & Lewis was at the helm but they also brought in BAG & Arnthor to divisify and switch things up a bit. I thought this worked well. Not to mention Dallas Austin and Kanye West. I emphasized BAG & Arnthor because their tracks stood out for me as far as tracks not produced by Jam & Lewis. "SloLove" was a single dying to be released. Too bad everybody jumped ship with this project.

-

They experimented with this before with bringing in Rockwilda on "All For You".

-

We'll see what she's cooking up over in Dubai or wherever she is. I do love the fact that she's completely detached from the US (seemingly) while working on her new stuff. I've read that she's flying different producers in to work with her. Sounds like a page from her big brothers book. wink

-

Damn I got time on my hands this morning. lol SOrry so looooooong.
