I was with them 100% up until about the cover of the Beatles tune in about 1987.

That was about the last track I liked from them. I think it was called, "Gotta Get U out of My Life".

You mean this one?

I actually like it more than the original nod and the horns add more pizzazz to their version IMO.

nod it's hard to remake a Beatles tune and improve on it,but I think EW&F did exactly that.I prefer it to the original.

I guess that's a typo, it was in 1978. and yes, it indeed beats the original in every fucking aspect

however they made tons of great tunes after 1978, even if you find the albums less consistent and more patchy than earlier ones, it's well worth checking out

anyway, any record collection that does not include a complete EWF discography does not deserve that name razz

A few of you listed Spirit as one of your favorites, and it's one of my favorites too. I listen to this album quite frequently,in fact.I love the positive, uplifting messages throughout...on songs like "On Your Face","Earth Wind and Fire" and "Burnin' Bush".I remember in the summer of '76,hearing "Getaway" on the radio every hour or so...lol...that song was HOT and it was extremely popular.I think it's one of their most infectious singles.

Fun fact: this album was released in the fall of 1976,around the exact same time that Stevie Wonder's Songs In The Key Of Life was released. The guys in EW&F have joked that Stevie kept them from the Number One spot, lol.

nod I would say that EW&F made at least four classic albums after 1978:

I Am,Raise,Touch The World and Millenium

the best moments on these albums are comparable to anything on the 70s albums, imo.

lol

I'm not serious, just teasing GC biggrin

however, defintely an era ended with Powerlight nod after that with Electric Universe they more or less went nuts and into panic-mode... and removed the horns! (which is akin to a Hendirx album without guitar), then a 4 or 5 year break, then new albums with up-to-date sounds and guest rappers, outside producers and so on.... SURE I Miss the calssic era... and SURE it hasn't been the same since.... but I still purchased every new release as soon as it was available, and I still wouldn't wanna give away even one of those younger albums.
(okay, come to think of it... I never gave/give away ANY record... from ANY artist... but that's the collecter/nerd in me... and that's another story lol)

but if you are younger not growing up with the records as NEW releases, and rather work your way through their cataloge of course you will go for the core albums first

When Prince showed up.....................EWF fell off my radar.

the answer is in your prior post: they "fell of your radar", they didn't really have new songs on the radio and you didn't buy their albums, so how could you even have heard some of their recent stuff?

okay, this is actually only half true: from 78 until 82 they DID have in fact some radio hits, but it IS true for the "patchy" years 87 until now

I have probably purchased every single album/cd from every artist that I like since about the mid 1970's. If music were crack............I'd be a crack head.

'Powerlight' is a weak album,IMO.The two singles ("Fall In Love With Me" and "Side By Side") are great but the rest of the songs seem very uninspired.

You didnt like Hearts to Heart? LOL......

At the time I liked Fall In Love with me and Side By Side, but also liked the interplay between Maurice and Phil on HTH...

I will agree that although the production sparkled on this album (I recall one reviewer saying it was polished within an inch of its life!!) there wasnt too much inspired music on it.....

Touch the World that eventually followed in 1987 was better, but Millenium in 1993 was a better album overall than Powerlight IMO...

Easier for me to say which album I liked least....and that would have to be In the Name of Love....

Reason being that from EU, I love Touch, like Magnetic and from Heritage, I love both Daydreamin and Welcome as well as the interludes that preceed both......I dont love anything from ITNOL, only like the title track....

The Powerlight album sounds like they attempted to remake Raise, only this time, they didn't have strong material."Something Special" is a rip-off of "Wanna Be With You".I can certainly see why Maurice went into a whole new direction for the next record. They didn't succeed (commercially),but I find Electric Universe to be a much more exciting album.

The three singles were "Boogie Wonderland","After The Love Is Gone" and "In The Stone".There is absolutely no way you didn't hear those songs on the radio in 1979 lol This was a major crossover record too, doing extremely well on the pop charts.

Just had to say they may not be what they used to be but I enjoyed hearing the current line-up play the old songs with a packed enthusiastic crowd... One more time for old time's sake... wink

For many years,I considered All N' All to be my favorite EW&F album. It's such a mesmerizing, inspired album."Fantasy" is one of the best songs they ever recorded. This album has it all: bristling funk ("Jupiter","Serpentine Fire".....smooth slow jams ("Love's Holiday","Be Ever Wonderful"....a jazzy funk workout ("Runnin")....a sparkling showcase for Philip Bailey's soaring vocals ("I'll Write A Song For You")....etc.This album is a true masterpiece and I know many fans who call this their favorite EW&F album.

Agreed!

Faces

Faces didn't quite measure up during their classic period.

I feel Raise didn't get it's due outside of Let's Groove and Powerlight was very

underrated. If it weren't for the brilliance of TTWOTW and

Gratitude, Powerlight would have rated very high on my list.

I agree.Since it was a 2-record set,I wish they had stretched out a bit and used the extra space to experiment a little. An entire side of that record should have been instrumental....where they could have dived into their Afro/latin/jazz roots a little more. Also,I really missed not hearing the interludes.Back then, the interludes were a trademark of an EW&F album.

What about this album?

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Any love for Touch The World? This album is one of my favorites.I often say that Raise is their best album of the 80s,but this one would be a close second. When it was released in the fall of 1987,it was obvious that many people were missing EW&F.There was alot of momentum and enthusiasm with this record. It felt good to see the guys back together, doing their thing like only they can.The album is superb.I think the real gem on this album is "Here Today And Gone Tomorrow",a Philp Bailey-led Quiet Storm favorite. With its haunting arrangement and soaring vocals, this track truly sparkles!
