If people knew the history of those decades, they wouldn't be saying anything about being born in the "wrong decade"...

I was born in the right decade. I was fortunate to catch the tail-end of the Disco Era, see gay dance music in the mainstream (even when "disco" was a bad word), delighted when the next British Invasion brought us New Wave and Romantic bands of the 80's, enjoyed the punk and gothic music when it really was the real deal, was around when the first day of MTV aired and grew up watching iconic music videos, grew up when "classic rock" was just the rock we listened to back then (who'd ever think it would be considered classic one day), and still danced when club music took on new sounds of pop tunes heard on the radio. The sad thing is, the music business and technology did not stay condusive to the types of music that emerged throughout my childhood, teens, and early twenties. The 12" is virtually gone, dance clubs are just not the same, the music has changed dramatically, and few artists from back then are around today or making music. Because of it, you would think I would give up and retreat from my passion for music but - instead - I continue to seek out the rarity I never had on CD, re-buy classics that are now remastered/expanded, or browse used record stores for a piece of my past. It may seem archaic, but I've always said that without music I would die. I'm still here, so I guess I am getting by with a rather nostalgic heart.

I'm a Reagan baby (b. 1984) and I'm fine with the decade I was born in myself...

Kinda understand it in the sense that it was a simpler time. But it would make sense if they lived it Still, many people have a sore spot for nostalgia, and its not out of the ordinary.
I certainly miss the 80s, and I love almost anything "positive" associated with it. But I'm happy living through 2013 and beyond.

I think it's cool for a teen to think he/she was born in the wrong decade when it comes to music. Especially if they think today's music sucks and enjoy music from before their time. That proves to me that it's not just me getting old thinking today's music sucks, it really does.

If they were living back then, they wouldn't have known about these things, unless you're talking about them going back in a time machine like Marty McFly. So they would have been like everybody else. Also a lot of kids back then went outside and played or ran around. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

In some cases, kids do the same things as past generations. Aren't Harry Potter books supposed to be popular? Reading books is centuries old and so is the idea of wizards. Maybe it might have been called Merlin & King Arthur, but basically the same thing. The Hulk, Superman, Sherlock Holmes, Batman, Iron Man, James Bond, etc. are relatively old too, but still are made although the earlier versions might have been different. Decades ago, Batman in the comics wasn't the "Dark Knight", more like the Superfriends version and Adam West. Wonder Woman had a chubby sidekick who liked to eat called Etta Candy, who probably wouldn't fly today. I got in on all the right decades but the problem is, with the exception of the gay house/dance era of the 1990s, I was too young to fully enjoy them.
Being born in 1967, I was only a preteen during the disco era. I remember when I was around 11 or 12 waiting for my grandmother to go to sleep and then sneaking out of her house and walking up to a disco up the street only to be turned away at the door when I was asked for ID. I remember the person at the door saying "Can I see some ID please" and I said "What is ID?" and they said "Uh...if you don't even know what it means, you're too young to get in here. Go home little boy". My grandmother whooped my little ass when she woke up and saw me gone and she told me not to worry that I would be able to go to discos when I got grown. Well, that was some bullshit because disco "died" the very next year.
In my teens, I had a ball in the skating rinks during the funk era of the early 1980s but I still wasn't grown though and couldn't fully enjoy and experience the era by not having to answer to anyone, being able to drink alcohol, and being able to bring a stranger home at 3 a.m. after a night of fun. And by the time I graduated high school in 1985 at the ripe old age of 17, a certain little goodie two shoes made it big on the music scene and influenced tons of other artists to be just as dull as she was so there was very little fun in those years in the late 1980s after I was old enough to get into clubs, especially since I was still living in a closet back then because I found out later that gay people were the ones that still threwdown hard and they had underground dance music of their own.
I did get to fully enjoy the gay house/dance era of the 1990s because I was grown but it all turned to either shit hop or trance so the fun was ended totally by the time I was in my late 20s. Sure, there was lots of good underground stuff since then but it was soooooo underground that even the gay clubs weren't playing it and you sure as hell can't bring a stranger home at 3 a.m. sitting at home and listening to that great underground music that you "searched for". That's why I've always said I was born in the right decades but should have been born a little older. I would have liked to have been probably in my mid 50s in the late 1990s when the music in the gay scene turned to shit. Hell, the straight scene had already been dead a decade earlier but that wouldn't have mattered. Andy is a four letter word.

as a black person, ANY decade before the present would be a step back. nothing in my family tree or history books says 1776-2013 would be better than 2014

And, just because you're black and walking around with dreads, doesn't make you part of the Rasta religion either.

I agree, I don't think just because you enjoy fashion or music of a certain era that you would necessarily belonged or even experienced it first hand the same way you would have earning whatever the normal wage in 1970s was.

People really romanticize the sixties, it looks so exciting on film.
There's something about the threat of being shipped off to become cannon fodder that adds a certain URGENCY to the moment.

I'm also a "Reagan baby" and I'm fine with that good movies/music during the 90's, the 80's were still fresh (yeah: the 80's never went away) so I can say I enjoyed both the legacy of the 80's and the best the 90's had to offer; with Internet I discovered the 70's and more stuff
in the end, it's NOT about when you were born, it's about your personal taste back in da day I was smart enough to see the "differences" between Suede and Boyzone, for example

I sometimes wished i was born in another decade. because i'd loved to experience the concerts from the legends. at their peak. That's why. I'm glad i have seen many legends live, but i still wished i was born earlier to could have experienced these concerts....
