Pointer Sisters are so underrated. Gospel, Funk, Rnb, Rock and Roll, Synth pop. They covered so much ground musically. |

Don't forget they made their mark in country music too for Fairytale. Performing the song at the Grand Ole Opry and later winning a grammy for it. According to the liner notes of the Break Out reissue, Automatic was the track that got Black radio stations interested in the Pointer Sisters again. They started playing the song before it was even officially the 2nd single off the album. In turn the sisters were invited by Don Cornelius to perform the song on Soul Train. The rest, they say, is history. | |

What is really cool, no effects were used during or after Ruth's recorded vocals. She has such a unique (deep) voice, and it really shined on this track. She is quick to say, "it's all me." Today, producers would have auto-tuned the crap out her voice.  | |

Looking back on it now it seems like a no-brainer to have Ruth sing the lead, but back then, the sister had to discuss who would be the lead. Of course Ruth got it but I can't imagine how the song would have turned out if June or Anita did it instead. | |

Prince clearly borrowed from this song when he created "Lavaux".It's a point that I keep making on this site: many of today's songs borrow elements from past songs
