After hearing the fiery concert performances, I kinda wish the live band had done the album.
But I guess that's to be expected once the tunes are taken out on the road and test driven a bit.
Still, another set of excellent compositions from Mr. Shorter.

Yeah, that band was on all four cylinders!

Unfortunately his wife died, just as the tour was really getting underway. If they had continued, I think people would've really taken notice. I did get the chance to see them in DC, before they went overseas...That band was no Joke!

I am grateful that a few of the European shows were recorded and filmed.

...

Wayne Shorter, '96 - 'Children Of The Night'

...

...

Wayne has performed 'Over Shadow Hill Way' many times over the years, but this band just really kicked it into overdrive! David Gilmore just rips up the fretboard here! and Rodney Holmes is a monster on the drums...he might as well have smoke comin' off of that kit. Alphonso Johnson's groovin pretty hard, too....

I've never thought it's a good record at all. I might have heard it at the wrong time and weren't able to appreciate it then. shrug

I strongly dislike the overall sound of a lot of 90s jazz stuff that uses synths from that time and too much reverb. I can't really get over that even if the compositions are strong on their own right.

Well, to each his own----and this is definitely one of those records that Jazz listeners are still arguing about. Half of them love it, and the others are like, "Wayne, what happened?" LOL!!!

Wayne's response to the criticism was to quote Miles: "I Like for my music to be 'Duty-Free' "....

A few months ago I was dining with a friend and put on Atlantis. We listened to it all the way through and thought "yeah, that was okay and actually rather interesting if you listen to it closely, but let's not listen to that album ever again". razz

I love early Weather Report (like really love), but have hard time stomaching anything after they started playing nice. Wayne's solo albums after those days have been a continuation of the same thing. Obviously he has nothing to prove anymore though.

and I love Atlantis razz -- especially , "The Three Marias"....so, different Strokes....

...

Well, Wayne's actually returned to the acoustic Jazz setting, since 1998...I think most of his critics kinda breathed a sigh of relief...For me , I'm still hoping for one more electric album, LOL!! I love him both ways, though....

...

BTW, here's a clip with Art Blakely and Freddie Hubbard (and the Late Cedar Walton) with an earlier version of "Children of The Night"

Wayne's 80!

What a great man. This is my favourite composition by him (and perhaps my favourite piece of music of all time):

Excellent Piece!

Interesting that it's on this album---- My all-time favorite Wayne piece is "Fall", from the same album!

Hard to pin it down to just one Shorter tune. Dude is a composition machine!

I'll break ranks with you two and go with one from The All Seeing Eye album...

...Genesis

Heard some good reports about his 80th Birthday Celebration here at the H'wood Bowl last night.

Recent interview w/Tavis Smiley:

He makes so many great points.
One of them being the Math/Music connection.
