This was posted in one of those "New Music" threads not too long ago.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I really like it but I've always thought that Eddie Murphy had musical talent. People joke about Party All The Time but c'mon, people were grooving to it in the 80's, now no one wants to admit it, lol!

He had other good songs too, I Was A King & Wazupwitu (if you could move beyond the video of the latter eek) were nice, socially conscious songs.

I think that because Eddie Murphy was such a huge comic star, no one knew how to take anything that he did seriously. We were always waiting for the punch line.

I hope this new song does well. It's a grown up, age appropriate, positive song... even with Snoop whatever. When I saw that he was featured, I did an eye roll, but his contribution was fitting.

I always loved his So Happy album, some great tracks, Bubble Hill is my favourite.

Agreed. Everything's Coming Up Roses and Yeah are great. He had other songs that I enjoyed too. I'd take Eddie Murphy over a good chunk of the usual suspects in current mainstream music, that's for sure.

What's wrong w/ it? Seems like it compliments a late summer vibe and paying hommage like most reggae does to the spirit of Bob Marley. Is it tame? Yea, but

The band is on point, Eddie has the right balance of lead and background vocalists. What should Eddie do? He doesn't want to do stand up, he has down time between films, I think he's damn brave to keep sharing w/ the world his musical ventures. To put it bluntly: Eddie gave the world something unexpected & now he is ready to release another music project, his first in 20 years. If the fans like it, he won, plain and simple. Eddie finished a album, he finished several albums, more than I can say for most recording artists who will never put together *1* album. If you aren't feeling it, what does that matter? I'm interested in hearing what this project sounds like.

P.S. It takes balls to have a film crew filming your studio session when you are seen as a comedian/actor to the general public at large.

Here's something to think about, compared to today's vocalists, Eddie sings well. Maybe in the past the production wasn't right for him, or he was getting familiar w/ his vocal range early on in the studio, whatever the reason is, Eddie wants to share something w/ the world, what is wrong w/ that? It has been 20 years, he isn't hurting anyone. cool

You really want a wake up call? He stepped to a mic not to talk but to sing, when he knew what the reaction would be, he knew people would trash him but he still hit record & released it to the world. Not just one record but a few records KNOWING the Eddie fanbase would feel ambivalent to it. Salute to one of the icons of entertainment.

Eddie has the same energy that a Prince has, he can walk into any room & people will be stunned at who they are witnessing. The oxygen will leave the room, that is the mark of not just longevity but something special to somebody after 30 years. As Diddy might say, "Take that"

I will admit it. It's the only Eddie Murphy song I have and I think it's a pop jam. There's no great vocal theatrics on it, but that's no necessary. I love it!

Add me to the "dig it" list! woot!

I've never had a problem with Eddie as a singer, actually. I still love "Party All the Time," "Put Your Mouth on Me," and "Whatzupwitu." music
