I went to the Live on Letterman show 2 years ago. Peter + orchestra. It was fantastic:

He was one of my all time favorites during the early to mid 80s. I still like him a lot but don't listen quite as much.
Melting Face & Security are my two favorites, both feel like complete & fully realized LPs that sound utterly unlike anything else. They're both pretty perfect - no lousy tracks, a lot of deep weirdness but also a strong sense of melody and a radically different way of thinking about rhythm. (Ever notice there are no crash cymbals on either one of those albums?) He's trying to get beyond the sound of guitar, bass, drums and keyboards, and does so to really amazing effect.
Just thinking about that tom tom fill that brings No Self Control to its climax (right after the "swarm of bees" line) has my heart racing a little bit. That Phil Collins was useful for some things, playing drums for Gabriel is definitely one of them.
I quite liked Up, would like to hear what comes next. Also really enjoyed that tour, but skipped his last two where he was doing older material.

I love Peter Gabriel's music. My favourite albums are Foxtrot and The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway from the Genesis period, and Peter Gabriel II. ------- It's difficult to choose some songs, but "White Shadow", "Mother Of Violence" and "Digging In The Dirt" come to mind now.

His musical evolution is probably the most creative of any modern artist. The dude just knew when to go to the next level time and time again. The Most Important Thing In Life Is Sincerity....Once You Can Fake That, You Can Fake Anything.

But really listening to his albums it makes me even happier to realize that artists like him and Prince were just very creative artists that knew how to make these sounds and ideas come to life in a great way. I'd nominate In Your Eyes as one of the most overrated songs in music history. All you others say Hell Yea!!

Prog rock is supposed to be long. You can get the debut, From Genesis To Revelation, which is short, 1960's "flower power" style songs. The first 2 albums are when Anthony Phillips was in the group. Anthony left the group because he had really bad stage fright. Steve Hackett & Phil Collins join on the 3rd album, and this lineup is considered the "classic" one. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Idk about that... it depends on who you ask but many people think of Peter's lineup as ''classic'' so it varies person to person. Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

It's the same lineup. Peter, Mike Rutherford, & Tony Banks were in the group from the beginning, so when Phil & Steve joined, that is the "classic" one, at least by prog fans. Others might say the more popular 3 man version from the 1980's is it. Anthony Phillips (with the checkered shirt) has released solo albums and various Genesis members have participated on them, including Phil, who wasn't in the group at the same time as Anthony. Mike & Tony are the only members in all lineups. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

You might like The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, the last Genesis album with Peter Gabriel, whose songs are shorter and (just a little) less pretentious. [Edited 8/20/13 2:25am]

"So" (obviously, the hit album) is my favorite Peter Gabriel album.
Also "Plays Live" (from ca. 1983) is brilliant.. Prince 4Ever.

I'm probably with you, although Prince and Bowie would be strong competitors in that race.

By the way, an album of covers of Gabriel songs called And I'll Scratch Yours will be published later this year. It was conceived as the follow-up to Gabriel's own album of orquestal covers, Scratch My Back, published in 2010.
