Do you guys think Miley Cyrus should have went this route to be taken more seriously as an adult artist

there comes a point in time where every child star wants to shed the bubble gum pop act and wants to be taken more seriously as an adult artist. Miley's transition from Disney pop songs to urban/twerking music have been receiving backlash and lots of people haven't been taking her new image seriously.

a couple of years ago she did the backyard sessions and personally I hink this style of music she was singing would have made her transition well into this mature artist that she wants to be.

the entertainment industry promotes this level of presentation

if these music award shows wouldn't tolerate it under any circumstance, these artists wouldn't do it

but it's no longer about the music and that's been the case a very long time ago

when people resort to showcasing body parts on stage in the name of entertainment, it means they know they're not really musically inclined or possess true creative expression

this is not entertainment at all

Miley is only 20 and has enough money and props in the industry to do what she wants and at the moment she wants to shed her teeny bopper disney persona. She has the talent and the vocals to reinvent herself in a couple of years as a serious artist. Right now shes just having a lil rebellion fun. Everyone up in arms bout this performance is just giving Miley what shes wants. Her new album will rocket to the top of the charts as will her nex single.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

She has the talent and vocal ability to transition to a serious artist without acting like an idiot. I don't think you have to run around with your tongue sticking out as far as possible to be taken seriously.

It's never too late to reinvent yourself with a mature image.

It is very appealing to a massive audience, as long as you already have fame.

Miley could do this look, then go back to stripping too.

I think she should consider this eventually.

She's being taken aeriously as an artist already. Haven't you seen the news? That VMA performance is said to have sexual, political AND racial implications. It's being taken more seriously than any other musical act right now.

It can't just be ill-considered crap, it's obviously "about" something and writers are falling over themselves to explain it.

It's true! I have seen it as "commentary" on Blurred Lines, bla bla.

You're right--I think back in the early 90's someone did a performance on the VMA's with the rear of their pants missing, and I thought, "Yep, that person is definitely not really musically inclined" and definitely does not "possess true creative expression." I had thought it was the case when he appeared in bikini underwear on an album cover, but I just couldn't tell for sure. He seemed like he might have some talent for music. But I definitely knew what to think when he wore those pants.

I'm not saying that Miley's remarkably talented in any way--and in fact the absolute amateurishness is what really struck me about the performance (she was just so bad at it, lolling her tongue out like a tired, bored dog, bending over with no real idea what to do other than that, all that foolishness with the foam hand). As provocative imagery goes, it looks like it took 2 minutes of planning and 20 seconds of rehearsal (and maybe not that, since people seemed to run into each other a bit)--this was going to be the "greatest VMA performance ever" (or whatever the language was)?

Lots of people showcase body parts on stage, lots don't. There are musically talented people in both groups. I understand not liking that type of presentation, but people can do it for lots of reasons, not just because they have no musical talent. I think Miley Cyrus is trying way too hard to separate herself from her kiddie career, and in my mind making a fool of herself--but all it shows to me is that, well, she's not that good at this type of show, or this type of music. However, if it's what she really wants to do, anything else would probably fall flat right now.

Miley got exactly what she wanted....attention. Right out of Madonna's playbook. Right now she's playing "ratchet white girl." Give her a year or two and she'll morph into something else. It's all about marketing. It's all about money.

Well, that article just mentions the fact that Miley gets more coverage than other important news while the Shakespeare theatre has to close. Which unfortunately shows what kind of culture is being supported in our society.

It's not that Miley as an artist is being taken seriously, it's what she does and what can be read into her actions that is said to be serious, in a bad way. I read a super interesting article the other day discussing this.

Oh I know, I was just reacting to the way this whole thing has been discussed by intellectuals as if it means something, as if it has ANY relationship to Shakespeare.

^^ Yes, a woman in crisis.
I don't think it's about trying to shed her child image or trying to be taken seriously (c'mon, does anyone think twerking with your tongue out makes a serious artist?) - I think she's just having some personal / emotional issues. wacky
I hope she works through whatever it is and finds peace and happiness eventually.

I honestly don't get why people thing she has some emotional issues going on, she promoting a new album with a new look. Its pretty standard pr procedure. From what I've seen shes not out on the streets shooting up and wearing crazy ass wigs and talking to trees on Hollywood Ave.

She's just promoting.

Regardless of musical genre routes, Miley is a below average vocalist. But as least she would have been more stable in country & folk.
