Vanilla Ice ~ Ninja Rap 2

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

People make jokes about Vanilla Ice now, but I think he made fun music and looked liked he was having fun, and to quote Paul McCartney "What's wrong with that?". What happened to rappers dancing like Vanilla Ice, Kid & Play, Freedom Williams, or MC Hammer? Breakin was originally part of hip hop. Then there was the Beastie Boys who made funny videos.

Huh? What does Under Pressure have to do with this song?

the jokes come mainly because he was such an obvious poser. I bought most Rap albums back in that era, but I skipped Vanillas debut. though musically there was maybe not that much to bitch about as some say (and yes I did enjoy other party rap albums by acts you mentioned and others) but I couldn't take Vanilla "Yo! i'm from the street" Ice seriously and received him more like the dawning Pat Boone of Rap. but he was not though. Phewww!

lurking however....

...I DID grab his second album Mind Blowing from the bargain bin (where it landed approximately 12 hours after its release) , even though this was ripped to pieces by the critics smile

I didn't spin the CD in years, but thanks to this thread I re-visited it yesterday, and must say, groovewise it has maybe even more hits than misses. no masterpiece, but it holds some decent grooves, heavily relying on pretty blatant samples of classic soul/funk tracks, and not as original or sophisticated as lets say a Dust Brothers production, however, with a view edits here and there (and probably another rapper...?) it still can make a somewhat enjoyable fun album.

Vanglorious... this is protected by the red, the black, and the green. With a key... sissy!

I don't really care about that sort of thing, only that I like the music. Many entertainers have given false stories about their backgrounds or lifestyle. Vanilla Ice isn't the first, nor the last. John Lennon had an "Working Class Hero" image, yet he grew up well to do and middle class, in comparison to the other members of The Beatles. Then John was a millionaire. The only member of NWA that was really from the streets was Eazy E, who was a drug dealer and gang member, but they aren't really shunned for it, except there's those Dr. Dre "makeup and sequin suits" jokes.

me too. now.
but this was 23 years ago, and I was pretty snobby and narrowminded concerning music back at that time. hey, I was young.. and needed the money lol

I'm aware that the business is full of posers (Lenonn basically even got shot for that), that's why for this special case I emphasised the word "obvious"
really, Vanilla Ice pulled a "Colin Powel before the UN" on that lol

so he deserves the jokes. but one can make jokes and still listen to the music

I admit I like this cool. I am an 80s baby. When this came out I was 10 or 11.
