Dru Hill - What happened?

Okay so VH1 Soul has been playing their videos today. They used to be so good! Basically took off where Jodeci left off in '96. I loved nearly almost all of their work from that point until '00...but somehow, they just fell off. The last few videos played on VH1 Soul featured some garbage from their "Dru World Order" album. Urgh. Sisqo didn't even sound like himself. And what was up with adding a 5th member? Anyway, I know a couple of years back they were doing some reality show with Keith Sweat that I never bothered to watch. So what happened?

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Sisqo going solo ended the group. They made that comeback album in 2002 but so much in music changed by then. Male R&B groups were disappearing quicker than Tyra Banks's hairline.

Dru Hill was the best R&B group of the mid to late 90s. Than Thong Song happened and that was the end of the group.

They were better than Jagged Edge and 112 and Next.

Dru Hill always looked like a group of circus clowns to me. Unlike the male vocal groups of the earlier 90s, they weren't sleek, they weren't fly, they weren't sexy. They WANTED TO BE as sleek, fly and sexy as Jodeci and the others, but instead looked like a group of dofuses.

...and they were terrible live performers. I remember seeing them in concert; they were singing "We're Not Making Love No More," and were awful. They were awkwardly bouncing all over each other, screaming and completely off-key. Sisqo needs to be sedated before he goes on stage. He always makes a fool of himself, and comes off like a hyperactive Gary Coleman.

Despite how much I personally disliked the personality/image of the group, I'll admit that they had a *few* decent songs like "Never Make a Promise" (although, again, the live performances of that song were always ruined by Sisqo...who wasn't the lead singer on the song, but on stage would cut in with a bunch of adlibs and antics like he was) and their videos were generally very well directed/produced/scripted.

Thanks for posting, this was a pretty good performance. I know back then there were always comparisons between Sisqo and K-Ci. And even though Sisqo could clearly sing his ass off, K-Ci could out sing Sisqo any day (in his hey day).

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

MadamGoodnight

They had a LOT of great songs. Too bad they didn't stay together for the long haul.

Male ego has to be part of this. Anytime a dude goes solo from a group and has success.. it is rare you can get them back together.

If Sisqo "Thong Song" had flopped.. they might have stayed together.

The thing is, the "Thong Song" was so damn silly that it should had flopped. I think it really surprised folks when it became a hit. Unfortunately, that was Sisqo's only hit during his solo days. I would have thought that "Incomplete" would had been a bigger hit than what it was...since it was a hell of a better song than the Thong Song, but oh well.

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

I'm not sure how big you expected "Incomplete" to be, but it topped both the R&B and Hot 100 charts, something "Thong Song" failed to do (#2 and #3). FWIW, I think "Thong Song" is awesomely ridiculous, but I've never liked "Incomplete" at all. shrug
