Let me set some shit straight in here:

1) D is more than a Prince copy. Like P did with the Minneapolis sound, D kicked off the neo soul movement. He is the KING of that and made it possible for Erykah and shitload of others to walk through the door he busted open. So yes, D has his own thang and is a FORMIDABLE musician.

2) I don't know what damn wars in neo soul Questo is flapping them gums about. That damn Afro pick must have drilled some holes in that head of his. If anything went down between him and D, that is between him and D and shoulda stayed that way. Questo started it by leaking "Really Love", which caused D to freeze out Questo. D seems to be very mild mannered, but what you don't do is fuck with his music. He doesn't play that.

3) One thing I will say is that D fangirled over Marvin way more than he did Prince, to the point where old boy was embarrassing himself. Thank God he seemed to have wised up and unlike Robin Thicke, he never stole Marvin's beats for himself. That's cause D has talent.

?Questlove is doing a disservice to himself. At some point, as an artist you have to move beyond fanboyism. Prince grew up admiring and borrowing from James Brown and Sly Stone, but eventually surpassed what they were doing. And later he bought Larry Graham and Maceo Parker into his camp on his terms. He did the same with George Clinton, Mavis Saples, and Chaka Khan. It's like Prince was saying, "I love you guys. You inspired me, but I'm the best now. And you're in my world."

?uestlove, seems content with kissing Princes feet thus conceding that he will never be Prince's equal or better.

Best answer and this pretty much nails everything. Any further discussion and we'll be beating a dead horse.

The liner notes in Voodoo made me lose a lot of respect for D'angelo. Not in a butthurt fanboy way, but I just think someone who has only put out two records in nearly 20 years shouldn't be publicly criticising the work of a man who has achieved more in that same timeframe than D ever will.

If D would rather spend his time smoking joints and getting BJ's from hookers than making music then that's his prerogative, but he really isn't in a position to judge the quality/quantity of Prince's output in such a public manner.

D didn't write the liner notes. I love him, but he isn't that articulate. A Poet named Saul Williams did.

I know he didn't write it but he still included it on his liner notes.

for various reasons, I give him a pass on those notes, mainly cause I think he didn't get half of what was being talked about

record just skipped...... "YOU DON"T HAVE VOODOO" ... please for all that is holy . try it. one of the greatest rnb records of all time. and a bold ambitious 2nd album.

As far as D goes I wish him the best. Loved the lived stuff last year. I just feel that perhaps he is trying too hard to fuck up. I think he romanticized the issues of Sly Stone, some of the problems Marvin had, etc and thinks this is the way he is destined. but I will say his talent level is other worldly and quite frankly the only reason why we tell him "that we still care"

ummm, i'm still waiting to hear what the hell was said in the liner notes of VooDoo about P For some reason I'm more interested in that than the album. For "aalloca", yeah, didn't care for the lead single. Didn't hear anything else from it, heard mixed reviews, stuff like "obtuse", inaccessible, etc. i normally don't listen to critics if i'm sincerely interested in an artist, but for him, the interest was/is kind of fleeting. I enjoyed Brown Sugar, solid debut, don't go back to it much, i'm still waiting to be fully "reeled in" by D i guess.

That's a bit of a stretch.

Good singer (not great), decent songwriter, fair to average musician at best.

D is def a Prince fan, but he is a Marvin STAN! He breathes, dreams and speaks Marvin. I remember I was introducing D to some friends of mine and I sent them a link from an interview he made in Sweden and my friends told me, dude was obsessed with Marvin lol... Difference between Robin and D, is that D is really talented and knows like every other musician how to steal your fav artists music in a subliminal way.

Q is just another story, dude is just annoying to me at this point. I used to like him and I enjoy his music, but as far as his personality goes - it's just blah!

I am too lazy to get up from my chair and go and look for my Voodoo CD in the livingroom, and you are too lazy to use Google but...here you are:

Scroll down a bit to read the Prince related part.
