New York Times:

Bruno Mars’s performance didn’t suffer from any of these mishaps — it was purposely unflashy, much like the man himself, and it was also one of the best. On a show that had little use for it, it was a solid artistic statement — and no one seemed to notice.

WE'RE OFFENDED BY MILEY CYRUS, BUT NOT BRUNO MARS' "GORILLA"?

by Maitri Mehta

Sunday night's VMAs were a veritable shitstorm. Miley Cyrus' abominable performance inspired more tweets than the Super Bowl. Lady Gaga was a flying nun. Macklemore won for best hip-hop record?! We were served a lot of questions and very few answers. One nice, par-for-the-course moment, though, was Bruno Mars' performance of "Gorilla," right after he won the award for Best Male Video. It was a performance with high energy, great vocals, and lots of lights. Definitely not who Kelly Clarkson was referring to when she summed up the awards show with the hashtag "pitchystrippers."

Okay, so Bruno can work a stage. But... have you read the lyrics for "Gorilla?" They are downright nasty, not to mention a little bit creepy. Still, the song is fantastic, with its upbeat tempo and jazzy feel, but with lyrics like, "But in this jungle you can't run" and "If the neighbors call the cops, call the sheriff, call the SWAT we don't stop, we keep rocking while they knocking on our door" are more than a little off-putting. We know Mars is talking about rough sex, but does it get a little too rough?

Maybe I am just taking Mars too seriously (I never thought that would be something I'd say, believe me), but his performance is being heralded and no one is talking about the content of his lyrics. It's not necessarily that we have an issue with Mars' song — as we mentioned, it's fantastic — but why does he get a free pass while Cyrus only gets slut-shamed for her performance with Thicke? Two years ago, when Rihanna released "S&M," she was slammed for the controversial lyrics in which she expressed her interest and enjoyment of sex and sang about chains and whips, hinting at BDSM. The result? The music video for "S&M" was banned in several countries for being too sexualized.

So what's the difference between the lyrics of "S&M" and the lyrics of "Gorilla?" Not much, besides the fact one of their respective artists is female and one is male. Mars is a talented performer, but so is Rihanna (and, arguably, Cyrus) — that shouldn't excuse him from the criticism that female performers constantly face head on, especially when they are displaying a control of their own sexuality.

I can't say I am personally offended by Bruno Mars' "Gorilla." Perhaps because the singer is one of the most inoffensive out there right now. His songs are catchy (do you remember every word to the "Lazy Song?" I sure do, against my own volition), but he hasn't been in the spotlight for much controversy.

Plain and simple, Mars is an affable guy who can write one hell of a song. But if we're going to talk about Cyrus' "We Can't Stop" and Rihanna's "S&M," shouldn't we be having a conversation about "Gorilla"?

First review of last night's concert in Orlando, Florida biggrin (wow that was fast!)

Concert review: Bruno Mars at Amway Center

While Justin Timberlake is elevated to god-like status, Bruno Mars toils in relative obscurity.

That reality seemed increasingly unjust on Tuesday as Mars sprinted energetically through a 90-minute performance for a packed house at Amway Center.

Introduced by a fanfare of tribal drumbeats, the diminutive star emerged amid a sea of spotlights for an opening foray of “Moonshine” and “Natalie.”

Attired in his signature fedora and a tan vest over a short-sleeved sport shirt, Mars embraced the music with the spirit that his wardrobe suggested: Despite a flashy light show, the songs were breezy and melodically engaging.

“We’ve been waiting a long time to come down here and play for you all,” Mars said in the opening moments. Then, he made it worth the wait.

Like Timberlake, Mars is a multiple threat. He’s a versatile pop songwriter, collaborating with R&B star B.o.B. (“Nothin’ on You”) and Flo Rida (“Right Round”), among others. He’s also an in-demand producer and an under-appreciated performer who sings and dances with ease.

On Tuesday, those skills were evident on well-crafted pop hits such as “Just the Way You Are” and “Locked Out of Heaven.” Both inspired massive sing-alongs on catchy choruses.

All night long, Mars borrowed and blended styles, from frequent reggae/R&B hybrids to the glorious Brill Building pop of “Marry You.”

The slinky style of “Treasure” evoked “Off the Wall”-era Michael Jackson, then brushed against the golden oldie “Money (That’s What I Want).” The latter worked as an inspired transition into “Billionaire,” which Mars co-wrote with Travie McCoy.

Even better, the doo-wop DNA of “If I Knew” showed that Mars has listened to his share of Otis Redding, too. Mars embellished the song with a funny monologue that included tips for aspiring R&B stars. Later, he genuinely revealed his softer side with a sweet “Nothin’ On You” and a piano-powered “When I Was Your Man.”

Although outgoing, Mars still seems an utterly unaffected pop star, limiting his dance steps to choreographed ensemble routines and often blending into the background with the members of his 8-piece band.

He can avoid the spotlight as much as he wants, but Timberlake still had better watch his back. This guy won’t stay in the shadows for long.

Watch: Bruno Mars Crushes New Single “Gorilla” at MTV VMAs, America Instantly Forgets

August 28, 2013 | Leave a comment

This year, like every year since 1981, the MTV Video Music Awards came into our living rooms and launched an all-out assault on American values. This week has been filled with front page spreads on some of the worlds largest media outlets showcasing the most controversial moments of the show. Holding fast to a tried and true tradition, the 2013 VMAs were a debaucherous spectacle that indulged, glorified, and magnified all manors of American excess while occasionally distributing awards to attending musicians and I loved it. I always do.

When you lock a large collection of musicians, actors, and miscellaneous celebrities in a room and give them booze and a live television audience, some antics are bound to occur. I find the whole thing inspiring. This year there were memorable performances from Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke, and of course an extended medley from the reigning “President of Pop” Justin Timberlake who resurrected NSYNC for a glorious but short lived reunion. For good reason, the absurd and provocative combination of Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke has inspired an impressive amount of discussion regarding their effect on our collective moral compass.

Somewhere buried deep inside this wonderful cultural abomination there happens to be some music and since it doesn’t seem like anyone else is going to, I want to take a moment to talk about a stunning performance from one of pop music’s most promising acts: Bruno Mars.

Even though Mars has only been a prominent solo artist since his 2010 breakout feature on B.o.B.’s “Nothin’ On You”, he spent years before that writing songs for the likes of Ke$ha, Flo Rida, Adam Levine and he also co-wrote Cee Lo Greens unforgettable “Fuck You”. In the past three years he has been nominated for 14 Grammy awards though he has taken home only one win. He is a gifted songwriter, singer, guitarist and he spent much of his youth as a performing Elvis impersonator (Mars also performed as Michael Jackson and Little Richard as a child). His style borrows from each of these and he has cited Prince, The Police and Led Zeppelin as key influences on his first two solo albums Doo Wops and Hooligans and Unorthodox Jukebox. There is a lot of fluff and nonsense in pop music but it would appear that Bruno Mars is taking his job very seriously.

His latest single “Gorilla” isn’t a house music dance floor banger or a trite emotional ballad. It is just a powerful pop anthem thats driven by live instrumentation, soaring vocals and a build that would make his classic rock influences proud. His performance at the 2013 VMAs featured a full live band, ample pyrotechnics and a relentlessly passionate vocal performance from Mr. Mars. It wasn’t scandalous or controversial. It was just a rock solid performance from a musician who, despite selling millions of records, still attacks the mic like he’s got something to prove. He is a dedicated student of pop music and he performed with heart and integrity so naturally no one seems to care. Its a damn shame.

My point is, its time you show Bruno Mars some respect.

Another review of last night's concert in Orlando, FL:

Bruno Mars: 'Put your camera phones down and dance with us'

Orlando-

It's 9:25 p.m. Tuesday. That's 25 minutes past the anticipated curtail "fall," revealing the small but ever-so-mighty bonafide rock star.

Bruno Mars, 27, wearing a rusty colored vest, white striped, short-sleeved polo, and a wide-brimmed hat, busted out with some "Moonshine."

To his right were four guys, armed with brass instruments and always in step with their fearless leader. (Inevitable eavesdropping led me to things like, 'They're Jackson-5-ing it up!' and 'They've got that old-school '60s thang down pat!')

To Mars' left was a guitarist and a bassist, both of whom contributed to the on-stage gyrations. Yep, these gyrations instantaneously produced deafening squeals and 'Eeeeeeks' from 94 percent of the female attendants. (Editorial note: The remaining 6% were buying drinks or were applying mascara in the bathroom.)

The backdrop on stage remained relatively constant -- a retro-inspired striped set that switched from aqua and purple, to red. But it enhanced the jumbotron effect, displaying images and video of black panthers, flames, and -- naturally -- Bruno's face.

When Mars was leading into his mega-hit "Treasure," he said one line that made the jam-packed arena self-reflect: "PUT YOUR PHONES DOWN AND DANCE WITH US."

That was music to the ears of our neighbors in section 104. People looked at their blinking red record button, glanced over at their better half, and thought for, like, a second. They thought, 'Hm, let's soak this up.' Cellphone. In purse. Now.'

Mars slowed this down with "Marry You" and "If I Knew," saying he "has a special place in my heart for old school music." Oh, and he and his band picked out a gal named Gaddy in the crowd and serenaded her -- one at a time -- with their own witty one-liners. (The cameraman was 12 inches from her face and we were all thinking that we'd see her on the jumbotron, but perhaps it malfunctioned during that part of the show. Her reaction throughout this ordeal would've been Facebook priceless).

Anyhoo, to the 'nosebleed-behind-the-stage-are-the-only-seats-available' show, Mars delivered, and left our new friends concocting their plot for entrance into his after party. If they got in, what happened there, well ---.

Another Orlando review

Bruno Mars And The Moonshine Jungle Tour Swing Into Orlando

It’s hard to believe that it was only three years ago when Bruno Mars burst onto the scene as the featured vocalist on B.o.B.’s “Nothin’ On You” and Travie McCoy’s “Billionaire.” Since then, he’s produced two full length albums stuffed with hits and become one of the most consistently impressive live performance acts around. Rightly thought of by many as the natural successor to Michael Jackson’s “King of Pop” throne, the 27-year-old Mars proved to Orlando audiences last night that he is here to stay with his thoroughly entertaining Moonshine Jungle Tour.

“There’s a special place in my heart for old school,” Mars told the capacity crowd, and that fondness for retro is not only evident in his music, but in his amazing onstage band as well. Costumed as a doo wop group, the brass and sax players who take the stage with Mars are as much a part of the show as he is, adding choreographed movement to their musical talents. “Treasure,” from the recentUnorthodox Jukebox, found Mars and company recreating the feel of the Soul Train era, replete with a set of video screens which looked like they came straight out of the 70s.

In stark contrast to the big production numbers were the ballads, showing off his amazing vocal range and his impressive control over the audience. Women were not only swooning but singing along loudly to “When I Was Your Man,” and his first huge hit, “Just The Way You Are.”

Mars, who exudes immense charm and also has a natural flair for acting (remember his hosting duties on Saturday Night Live?), had lots of fun with the audience as he broke down the rules for female seduction with his hilarious R&B 101, pulling one unsuspecting but lucky lady from the audience (who just happened to be our 102 JAMZ front row winner), in on his game.

Closing the show with his latest single, “Gorilla,” the blasts of flame may not have been much of a surprise to those who caught the same performance Sunday night on the MTV Video Music Awards (where Mars walked away with the Best Male Video award for “Locked Out Of Heaven” and demonstrated a form of showmanship unmatched by the other performers) but they were thrilling nonetheless, giving the concert a raucous closing, yet still allowing Mars’ amazing vocals to shine.

Reviews from last night's show in Tampa, Florida (Aug. 28)

Review: Bruno Mars puts on smooth, sexy show at Tampa Bay Times Forum

Bruno Mars channels stars into own style

By RICK BENNETT
Tribune correspondent

Published: August 28, 2013

Bruno Mars and his band of merry men answered the question none of this capacity crowd asked Wednesday night; can a artist copy everyone in pop music history so effectively that he becomes a one-of-a-kind entertainer?

The answer is yes, even if everyone at the Forum was more concerned with Bruno’s dance moves which simultaneously channel Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson.

Armed with a deceptively simple stage setup, Mars delighted the crowd early with hits from his latest album “Unorthodox Jukebox,” including “Moonshine,” “Natalie” and early highlight “Treasure” as he encouraged an attentive audience to put down their cell phones and dance.

On Sunday night, Mars bested Justin Timberlake, Robin Thicke, Ed Sheeran and Kendrick Lamar to win the Best Male Video award at the MTV Video Music Awards for his song “Locked Out of Heaven.”

Opener Fitz and the Tantrums proved that great songs, a great band and good energy don’t always translate to a cavernous auditorium as they struggled to win over the Bruno fans with great, but mostly unfamiliar songs.

Bruno Mars & The Moonshine Jungle Tour Rock The Tampa Bay Times Forum! | Review

Let me start by saying that if you’ve never seen a Bruno Mars concert, you, as a music fan owe it to yourself and this man to go check him out. Last night, Bruno Mars, and his amazing tour, The Moonshine Jungle Tour rolled into Tampa, Florida for the latest stop of their worldwide tour. Along with the opening act Fitz And The Tantrums, these fellas put on one hell of a show.

The whole thing went down at the Tampa Times Forum in Tampa, FL, where Fitz And The Tantrums got the party started. They impressively ran through a number of their biggest tracks, showing off charisma and bringing some energy to folks entering the building a bit late. The group didn’t disappoint, showing off their unique pop, rock, R & B infused style effortlessly and gearing the crowd up for a dope evening in music and performance.

After a short intermission it was time for Bruno and The Moonshine Jungle Tour to get underway. He and his incredibly talented live band hit the stage to great fanfare, showing up as a large black and gold palm tree decorated curtain dropped. After the crowd went bananas, the fellas jumped right into their show.

Mr. Mars ran through a number of his dopest tracks, from his debut album, Doo Wop’s & Hooligans, as well as his new opus, Unorthodox Jukebox. Hitting tracks like “Just The Way You Are”, “Marry You”, “Treasure”, and “When I Was Your Man”. Being the true showman that he is, Bruno also took time to speak to the crowd showing his appreciation for their support, even interacting with a few lucky fans who were close enough.

Bruno showed off his chops effortlessly and flawlessly all night, not only showcasing his music, but turning the concert into an experience; definitely bringing the party to Tampa. He did his always fun, energy charged James Brown impression in the middle of the show, before diving back into some dope tracks. Before you know it, Bruno closed out the event and exited the stage; but of course came back for an encore. He came back and gave an incredible performance of his smash single “Locked Out Of Heaven”, as well as “Gorilla”; rocking the crowd and giving it one hell of a last go round.

The Moonshine Jungle Tour is definitely something amazing, unique, refreshing, and dope. Bruno, his band, the stage hands, and everyone else who makes the show possible have put together something fun for everyone from children to the older folks. The concert was definitely a party that anyone could attend and have a great time; ratchet, classy, or whatever you classify yourself. Be sure to check out Bruno Mars next time he’s in a city near you! Shouts to Bruno Mars and the Tampa Times Forum!

Signed, Jesse James

Bruno Mars proves at his concert why he deserves to win music awards

August 30, 2013

Bruno Mars demonstrated Wednesday night at his Moonshine Jungle tour stop in Tampa, Fla why he deserved his most recent MTV VMA music award.

After hearing about so many bizarre singers and performances, Bruno Mars and his eight piece band set the calm and made a difference in a superb concert. It was an evening of reggae, pop, jazz, blues, soft rock per say and soul - like going back to old school music. His dance moves were so smooth and his singing impeccable. The black stage curtains adorned with gold palms, spectacular lighting effects, and wild animal images including gorillas flashed on the video screen to set the concert on its tour theme.

The curtains fell to commence the ninety minute or so concert with Bruno’s opening hit song “Moonshine”. “Natalie”, “Locked Out of Heaven”, “Billionaire”, “Money (That’s What I Want)”, “Pony”, “My Boo”, “Our First Time”, “If I Knew”, were a few added to his lengthy repertoire and closing with his newest release “Gorilla”.

Bruno Mars U.S. tour continues until September 1 including a concert in Puerto Rico just before heading out to his world tour until March 2014. For other tour dates and ticket information click ===>additional tour dates.
