Don't Be Cruel (25th Anniversary)

Twenty-five years ago, former New Edition singer Bobby Brown released the amazing Don't Be Cruel. Having put out the lackluster King of the Stage two years before, no one expected that he would come back so hard and with so many hits. Don't Be Cruel sold forty million copies worldwide, making Bobby the king of 1988. Of course, we all know what happened to his career afterwards, but to this day Don't Be Cruel remains one of my favorite albums. If you'd like to know more about Don't Be Cruel, please check out my article in Ebony.com.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

This was a pretty inspired effort by Bobby. "Don't Be Cruel" is definitely my favorite Babyface song. The other singles are all great as well (and all 4 had memorable remixes). "I'll Be Good to You" could've been the 6th single and probably would've been if "On Our Own" weren't released in '89. The "filler" is pleasant at the least.

Good times, good times...

Very cool album, but damn, the media is full of liars. That album did not sell 40 million copies. The album speaks for itself. Ebony don't need to report lies to make it look like more than it was.
