There have been many bands influenced by Steely Dan over the years, but in the case of China Crisis, the influence was Direct!
During his 80's hiatus from Steely Dan, Walter Becker was approached by Virgin Records to produce the UK Pop group. He liked their music, and agreed to come aboard and help hone their sound --first on the album, 'Flaunt The Perfection' (1985), and again in 1989, on 'Diary of a Hollow Horse'. China Crisis has always had a certain feel--but The Steely Dan influence is definitely felt, not only on those albums , but also on the group's subsequent records....
In the case of "Diary of a Hollow Horse"(1989), the album was produced at a time when there was more of a Dance/Rave Revolution in the UK. Virgin was now concerned that the music China Crisis was making with Becker was suddenly out of step with the new movement. They hired another producer, Mike Thorne (Soft Cell) to re-record three of the tracks.
Fast forward twenty years--
Now, in 2013, the Diary of a Hollow Horse is being re-released in the UK as Walter Becker and the Band had originally intended. .It's a 2CD set with the full Walter Becker-produced album on disc 1, and the bonus/demo tracks, including the Mike Thorne reworks, on Disc 2....

Some good 80s material that mostly went under the radar.
Music for adventurous listeners "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all." | |

Ndeed. China Crisis was always one of those UK groups, Like Danny Wilson, Prefab Sprout, etc...., that were always just bubbling under--loved by critics and devotees, but never got the really big push....
