What ever happened to Cherokee?
I wonder why she never made it. I guess that Prince influenced style was hitting at all in the early 2000s.

Cherokee was bad ass. I wish she had more support in the biz. I think she helped pave the way for artists like Janelle Monae. I Swear did okay but never really got the push that it should have. I think if she had dropped Runaway, she might have gotten a better response but I get what she was doing with I Swear; trying to appeal to people who like that MLPS sound and the neo soul crowd. It was a cross between the two sounds. Nectarine was cool and had that Andre 3K appeal but I think Runaway would have helped her musical identity better. To be honest, Star was catchier than Nectarine but labels press artists to go in directions that aren't in their best interest all of the time. Anyway, I hope she drops another album. I like her. work. (and she's cute)

Seems like most folks who got labelled "Neo Soul" received the kiss of death.

She always reminded me of Jody Watley. 2000 was a bad time for adventuous artists. Res got lost in the shuffle, too.

Res' story is interesting as hell. I remember about 2 years ago VH1 used to play her vids during their Sub Soul hour and I thought new girl was a new artist. I never heard of her when she came out. But she is working with Talib Kweli now.
Re Cherokee, I found the song I Swear on Youtube 3 years ago. I have no idea what went down wit her. Drugs, maybe? She coulda had a kid. What label was she on? "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

Didn't label troubles delay (and essentially kill) her second album, even after the I Swear video had come out? Was a shame, since I took it that maybe she was broadening/deepening her sound after a promising but kinda 'safe' debut album. I recall seeing her playing the hell out of a bass guitar in a live clip when she came out at first, and hoping that more of that could come through on record, rather than the more subdued neo-soul thing she and everyone else was doing around that time.
