I've been listening to the album since last night and throughout the day and my conclusion is I love it, great continuation of the Archandroid story but if this were just a stand alone album it would not work. She wears and plays her infulences on her sleeve, will this win over new people I don't know. You can hear elements of The Jackson 5ive, Stevie Wonder, that purple guy and if you could mash up Berlin's Take My Breath Away with Primetime you would have a winner. I'll give it a 31/2 star count out of five, if you have not heard the Metropolis EP and ArchAndroid proir to this, you would be a ball of confusion. cool

imo it works better alone than the archandroid ..the songs are less connected to the story this time

I think this album works alone or together. I think this is by far her most accessible album and over all stronger album.

I''m loving the album, but those "transitions" had to go. Just sing, girlfriend. disbelief

It looks like Janelle Monae moves 45 thousand copies in her first week landing her 6th place in the top ten on the Billboard charts according to Billboard-(Although Billboard will confirm on the morning of September 18th.)

yes in another preview she was at number 4 let's see...anyway the official charts in Ireland are out she debuted at number 7...and in U.K 13 or 14 I don't remember a great result considering she did zero promotion in Europe and she isn't on the radio..plus the archandroid highest chart position was number 51 in the U.K..happy for her ..she is a real talent she deserves this..without Diddy she could be one of the biggest star in the world I'm sure about this..hope she'll get rid of him for the next project...

Diddy is giving her the freedom she needs and that WE - as consumers - WANT.

She is making money and she is a success. The music is more important - haven't you gathered that from Janelle?

Janelle Monáe secures her best sales week and first top 10 album as "The Electric Lady" bows at No. 5 with 47,000. The set, which is her second full-length effort, follows her debut album, "The Archandroid: Suites II and III." It arrived in 2010 and debuted and peaked at No. 17 with a start of 21,000.

Yay! Go Janelle! biggrin cool

-

Although I'm happy for her to land in the top 5, I'm still a little disappointed in the fact that it looks like she only gained 26K fans in three years. That's a pretty light harvest considering all the seeds she's been planting since "TA" dropped. Lord knows I'm no Debbie Downer but her team needs work. It's great for her to land at no. 5 with little to no promotions. Diddy & Atlantic should be ashamed of themselves, (but they won't).

-

She and her team needs to pick better singles and make videos (promotional material) that connects with her target market (if they even know who that is) better. "Dance Apocalyptic" had no business being a single. Good, fun album cut but not single worthy in 2013. Wasted time and opportunity as the follow up to "Q.U.E.E.N." I'm not sure if "Primetime" has even been sent to radio yet. Maybe this album will be a slow burner. As long as it catches fire at some point.

I agree that Diddy and Atlantic should be ashamed and I still hope that she can find another partnership for the next record..because her potential is there...a top 5 record with no songs on the radios or hits training it..we all know what she could do with a promotion like the one for bruno mars...

I also agree that Dance Apocalyptic was a terrible choice ..plus it's my least favorite song on the album..primetime is the next single and it should have a video soon..but why isn't it receiving regular airplay on R&B radio? it's an R&B love song that sounds like an hit by the way...ft miguel and his songs receive airplays..

I saw an article the other day: read:

http://io9.com/are-janelle-monaes-science-fictional-lyrics-keeping-he-1309921218

I don't think the science fiction is the real reason why they don't want to pass her music on the radios...the comments under that article were more close to the real reasons imo..because we know that there are a A LOT of reasons why the radio stations don't want to give her airplays..

Really now? At least you're not one of those delusional fans that think every move she makes is genius. I think this project is still redeemable. They just have a to do a better job strategically. I have to check out that article. As I've said before, she has to really make every move count because she's going against the "system" or the general grain of thought in modern R&B/Pop music.

Yep, like this comment that someone posted:

What's keeping her off radio is that the stations are owned by massive media conglomerates who care nothing about music but only for pimping out the same five songs to the drooling masses, in heavy rotation, over and over and over again, each one more formulaic and soulless than the last.

The problem isn't science fiction themes. Katy Perry just had a song called Extraterrestrial. The reason Perry's songs get airplay is that she is an easily marketable property with all the musical innovation of a lump of graphite. Monae isn't on the radio because her music and persona are actually interesting and have artistic merit.

If Janelle Monae wants to be embraced by mainstream radio she should wear a rubber thong and let her tongue hang out of her mouth like an overexerted poodle. She should use the same old tired house beats and drench her voice in auto-tune. Her lyrics should reflect someone who has a 4th grade education. Then and only then, will Janelle Monae be suited for the radio.

I can't really get into many of her ballads. I tend to find her tone of voice a little screechy. I hate to focus on the negativity though... she's truly a great artist.

I feeking the album and I'm killing Ghetto Woman! The Stevie vibe is stellar in my book.

Given Em What They Love.....too short but I likes.

Electric Lady ...love it and want to see a banging video with Solange since I love her too.

You can clearly see they don't know what to make of her.....she has IT....she is extremely beautiful and even though she is a tiny lil thing she projects herself as a very strong woman. With that said I'm usually drawn to the querky behavior she delivers and it's the very same thing why I was drawn to Prince. She does wear her influences on her sleeve but it's clearly Janelle take on it and that is what impresses me the most.

What a pity if this album doesn't blow the hell up. It is refreshing, I too think the talking in between the song should have been scratched....but it kind of carries the story from the Arch album. I'm just gonna wait for my friend to extend Ghetto Woman and mix it with some Stevie shit, and I'm then shake my booty cause the booty don't lie! lol

Time will come... people are not really ready yet for what she is doing right now. at least that's what i think. hopefully she'll do her own thing... that's what i like about her, she does her thing and doesn't follow what's hot right now.

A lot of people are blaming Diddy for dropping the ball. I'm no fan of him, but she wouldn't have been on any label if it wasn't for him. And she also wouldn't have control over her music and image. Janelle has been all over tv, award shows, talk shows, and commericals. She's doing some fashion show on the E channel. I don't know how much more promotion she can get. The right people are aware of who she is, she just hasn't had the hit song to seal it.

Then why is her commercials always on my TV playing the same dry music in the background, with the same dry themes, with the same dry head piece and same dry "costume" she wears. I saw her on various shows last week. I love the excuses and I use to be a fan, but I'm over it. Primetime is cool, but I'm not interested in listening to the album, let alone priviewing it. Neither is the buying public.

Save those tired "well if she wore a thong" blah blah bla. Lorde's new single is doing just fine, Lana Del Ray is an international superstar. Adele just sold 25 MILLION albums worldwide. I can see the next excuse already.

I just think it's funny that the weeknd who I had no idea had an album out, let alone a single can double her sales.

She's a flop, will remain a flop, and all those who don like it will just have to DEAL.

PS she's kinda cute, so kudos in that department.
