As much as I despise Beyonce, she's def better than Rihanna, outside of the discography portion of the two. Rihanna's songs are more catchy and she makes better music IMO. Cheers is my weekend song. Sh*t gets real if it comes on and I'm out.

Beyonce's voice does nothing for me, but she is the better singer and performer. I'd purchase a Rih song tho before Bey. I'd never purchase an album from either artist.

and? what does that have to do with your thread topic? lol party

KNOWING that you are one talentless hack, does NOT make you "better" (your claim) than someone who is at least technically superior (which of course could be said about 90% of the population. and that includes goats, cats and toads) really, what kind of twisted logic ist that? nutty

so you are missing musical taste AND common sense? what a combination haaaaaaaaaaaaaa haaaaaaaa!! hahahahahaaaaaaaa!!! falloff

Better voice: Beyonce

Better songs: Rihanna

Better dancer: they both suck!

Better performer: Beyonce

Better looks: both are hot - Rihanna oozes sex appeal, but Beyonce is more beautiful.

More talented: It's easier to say Beyonce because of the voice and she co-wrote some of her songs. But Rihanna is brilliant at re-inventing herself like some chick used to do so well in the 80s and 90s.

Beyonce can dance circles around Rihanna. Beyonce can basically do everything better than Rihanna. Rihanna is just the product of a cheap – but annoyingly effective – machine. The bar is set so low for her that when she exceeds, reaches it, or come close it's seen as some kind of a victory. She's the junk foods equivalent of a pack of twinkies on sale at Walgreens.

I advise you next time to put some arguments to backup your opinion! Rihanna is better that Beyoncé? Just like that?

They both suck a dick musically, Rihanna's music is a total mess; unoriginal, uninspired (like Dancelot said) and filled with weak EDM production.. her lyrics are nothing but a whole bunch of cliché words... Beyoncé is better at least when it comes to vocals tho her music lacks something and personally I feel that she maintains the same vibe for every song she does, she just changes the lyrics, you can't just grow as an artist if you keep releasing the same sound over and over. Finally I'd like to say that Rihanna's voice is one of the most things I can't stand in this world, it gives me lung cancer.

[Edited 8/9/13 4:15am]

It's completely amazing to me that on a Prince board (an artist who was once so amazing at writing catchy pop songs) shits on Rihanna's music so aggressively when in many ways it is similar.

I gather the above poster has not spent much time listening to much of the material on her records but I can tell you that there's a lot of really fun catchy pop music in her catalogue. From Evan Rogers (who during his solo career covered Private Joy) to The Dream, she's got top notch songwriters helping her.

The look and the music are a great fit much in the same way good pop music from the past has proven. While you may not enjoy listening to her voice, there's no denying that in a pool of singers from a variety of genres who all sing the same, Rihanna's tone is unique.

Whatever - I feel like I'm talking to a bunch of folks who have more than likely not sat down and actually listened to the music so I suppose I am more than wasting my time here. Further still, don't bother come back here and tell me that you have listened to the music when you know you haven't.

I don't listen to any of these artists, but you are certainly correct in much of what you're saying here. "Umbrella" was a great song, but orgers are a narrow-minded bunch so will have a hard time even acknowledging that. And Beyonce's voice is far more grating to me than Rihanna's. It's technically better, sure, but it's also screechy and unpleasant. I might not like Rihanna much, but at least she sticks within her range and doesn't try too hard. The same cannot be said for Beyonce, who has all the subtlety of a brick flying through a shop window.

ha! Rihanna's music is way more versatile than Debbie's

Your music would be more "versatile" too if you had to rely on too many producers & beatmakers as well. That argument is a weak choice of a smoke screen.

At least Debbie has produced herself on certain occasions (she still holds the all-time record of being the youngest producer in the history of Warner Bros Records, a title once held by Prince, mind you! wink ) . Rihanna has NEVER produced her own tracks, not once ever! At least Debbie has written her own songs most of time. Rihanna has not written one freaking lyric in her entire music career. At least Debbie can play keyboards. Rihanna has NEVER learned to play an instrument in her entire life.

Beyonce is no better neither. She's infamous for written only 4 words OR changer a few lyrics in a song that is given to her and dare to received album credit as a "co-written".

Oh give me a break - stop hating and start listening. It's about the music son - forget all of the artistic merit silliness that is common place here at prince.org. The things the musicians are doing in that Rihanna camp are freaky and many of the songs are excellent. Whether you like her voice or not, it's certainly unique in its tone. However, I'm sure all of the non-musician and non-singers on this board will be able to tell us all otherwise.

Totally agree - it's a bit pathetic actually when there's so much great material out there from artists who have clearly been influenced by the magic that Prince used to bring. So many of these artists have taken his influence and created an exciting mixture of music and visuals.

Unfortunlately, Prince's early press kit has a lot of people fooled into thinking that the quality of a song is independent on whether or not the artist produced, arranged, composed and performed by the artist.

Art is art and good pop music is good pop music.

Beyonce is a music industry fabrication with songs and albums that have not connected in a real meaningful way with society. Her interviews suggest that she's very scripted and as a result, I don't really hear or get the impression that she has anything to talk about or stand for.

It's a bit boring really but it's safe, and middle white America can't handle reality.

America as a whole doesnt have a good grasp of reality. Its almost as if it would kill it to actually "think" and as soon as you start "thinking" people start calling you a hater, weird, strange, eccentric, or different just because you can see through bullshit lol

I dont criticize her alot for this very reason. Alot of people say that she is overrated...(which is true) but Rihanna is not winning grammys, awards, being compared to MJ, Tina etc like Beyonce...who I feel is more overrated.

Rihanna doesnt try hard to be more than what she is. She knows her voice is limited. She is not looking for titles. She might have a skank attitude but she knows that she is just a "pop star" and doesnt take herself to seriously. She also has more personality and catchier music (although I wouldnt buy it or go out of my way to listen to it besides at a club/lounge where its just fun to dance too at the moment)

I have way more respect for gimmicky artists that have fun with what they do but are aware of their limitations versus an artist who is delusional about this fact and thinks in THEIR mind that they are Michael Jackson/ Tina Turner/Aretha Franklin/Bob Dylan/Stevie Wonder.nuts lol

Whatever buddy - I keep hearing the same crap from all these music listening elitists. This whole thing about only enjoying music at a club or lounge only because it came on suggests that you think it's not the type of music that is worth purchasing. Newsflash! Music is supposed to move you and as a result, that fun you're having at a club or lounge dancing to her music is what it's all really about. I find the movies and songs that I have enjoyed the most move me or have moved me in ways that I hadn't been moved.

Discovering Prince through my older brother several decades ago was a moving experience. Unfortunately, the music no longer moves me - although that new song (Groovy Potential) is kicking some major booty in my house!
