The Idolmaker soundtrack on CD I recently picked up this soundtrack on Amazon. From what I read years ago that Prince was a fan of the movie and you can definitely see the similarities in The Idolmaker and in Purple Rain on some of the imagery. I own the vinyl and cassette of this soundtrack and longed for it to come out on CD and it finally happened. It was put out by Varese Sarabande records who are known primarily for their incredible soundtrack scores to many films. The sound on Idolmaker is mastered very nicely, the entire package is stunning along with CD liner notes and is a definite must have for any fan of the film and for any fan of soundtracks in general. Nice job Varese!

About two years ago, it was announced that Ryan Gosling was doing the re-make. Then, suddenly, he pulled-out of it. Ray Sharkey was fantastic in the original and there is still talk that the project is now attached to Joseph Gordon-Levitt. (Note the date this was announced in the Huffington Post below. A lot of things have happened since then...)
Ryan Gosling NOT Directing 'Idolmaker': Actor Pulls Out Of Directorial Debut Ryan Gosling, for now, will stay solely in front of the camera. Not that that's a bad thing.
The Oscar-nominated actor was set to make his directorial debut (and star in) a remake of the 1980 film "The Idolmaker," a thinly veiled biopic of music scout/promoter Bob Marcucci. Now, Deadline reports, Gosling has pulled out of the film, with his schedule just too tightly packed to fit such a big project.
It's a legitimate excuse, too. He's beginning production with his "Blue Valentine" director Derek Cianfrance on "The Place Beyond The Pines," now co-stars Bradley Cooper, will then face off with Sean Penn in the mob-thriller "Gangster Squad," and then head off to shoot "Logan's Run." In between, he'll be promoting his new Steve Carrell co-starring romantic comedy, "Crazy, Stupid, Love.," which is expected to be a big hit, as well as his Cannes hit with Carey Mulligan, "Drive," and George Clooney-helmed political thriller "The Ides of March."

I just found out that the film is also being released on bluray on August 27th. I hope that the transfer is better than the DVD. The movie was so underated. A company called Shout Factory! is putting out the bluray and they have a reputation for taking great care of their transfers and put out good product. It would be nice to see the soundtrack and bluray do really well. It's one of those forgotten gems that deserves more!
