I must say that was a well produced, well organized memorial/tribute. Malcolm-Jamal Warner did an excellent job as a MC, he even got teary eyed at one point. Everyone told a story that you can tell came straight from the heart. George seemed like one hell of a man who genuinely loved his craft like his life depended on it. Several speakers remarked that he always had a smile on his face, opened his home to other artists and was never heard speaking ill of other musicians. A lot of stars were in the house: Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Bill Withers, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Stanley Clarke, Jeffrey Osborne, Sheila E., Dianne Reeves, Al Jarreau, Doug E. Fresh, Marcus Miller, and a handful that I can not remember right now.
Kenny Latimore learned "Sweet Baby" on the spot. That was incredible. Chaka sung a little of "My Funny Valentine" and sounded great as well.
I must say they truly sent him off the right way. [Edited 8/19/13 17:26pm] | |
